Large House on Mahawella beach, near Tangalle, Sri Lanka - Peace and Quiet and Beauty and one minute to the Beach
We built our house three years ago and have since had hundreds of guests there of all ages. It is a restful place with smiling helpful staff - the cook, Nandi, is a family friend who we have known for 20 years. The architect designed us rooms which are large; elegant and airy and the whole property has 8000 sq feet of covered area, which includes staff quarters, a hen palace a gravelled driveway and the additional three gardens promote seclusion, space and peace. Please look at the owners website (link below) for more details.
About the Owner
I am nearly 60 and built Thalassa as a deliberate attempt to be better in touch with my children and grandchildren and old friends and escape the English winters.
I love Sri lanka and am now quite good at describing many areas and aspects of the island and happy to share my experience with other travellers.
I write books occasionally and read a lot and my husband is a political journalist. We love books, antiques, pictures, food, travel and our friends and families and Thalassa is a wonderful place to enjoy all those enthusiasms.
From the Owner
“We bought the land in 2002 and built in the last 3 years. Thalassa is a huge comfortable house which enables everyone who stays there to have fun together and apart. The staff make washing up, washing, shopping and cooking completely unnecessary and we all value the extra time this gives us to enjoy ourselves and each other. I love the sea and water and was brought up in Dorset, on yachts and on a houseboat in Chelsea but I had never had the chance to live full time on a beach. I love it. Thalassa is not remote, but is private and peaceful.”
Activity and Interests
Special interest holidays:
We had a painting course at Thalassa this year for the first time run by Lincoln Seligman (google) and the house is well adapted for similar groups for fitness, writing, bridge or painting...
Our beach is Mahawella - the fishermen live at one end and we live at the other. It is a beautiful semi circular sweep of beach which is one mile long - so very good for running - completely unspoiled and clean with safe swimming and white sand. At the far end of our beach you can scrape rock oysters off the rocks and eat them and catch sea urchins and crabs.
Currently Colombo is the only airport and Thalassa is 3 hours drive from there. We are met by a local van and driver and can recommend several who speak English and drive carefully.
Tangalle is 7 kms away and Dickwella is 7 kms away from Thalassa as well. Safari at Yala is about one hour and a half; whalewatching about an hour; the hills and tea plantations about 3 hours.
Safaris of three different kinds, whale watching, shopping for gems and jewellery, climbing up the rock temples, fishing, sundowners at the Amanwella hotel 5 minutes away and lunch at Manuela's on our beach and at Winnie's shack at Palm Paradise.
Nandi does all the shopping at the local markets twice a week.

From the Owner
“The huge beautiful spaces in the house are a big plus for me, because people can read or write or play in the pool or sleep in hammocks simultaneously without irritating each other. The sea views are unrivalled, the beach is clean and safe and long and white. The staff are charming - helpful and kind and efficient and imaginative. They love children, old people and animals especially. Nandi is an exceptionally good cook. We are now very much part of the community and all the locals are happy to help anyone staying here to do anything they want.”

- Outside: We have 3 distinct gardens with different climates - the palm garden between the house and the sea, which has a white sand path leading to the gate; an inner garden with tropical flowers and trees round the swimming pool and massage temple and a further garden round the circular driveway with a greater range of flowers and trees and birds, undisturbed by the sea breezes. The pool is shallow and then ten feet deep and decorated with Chinese glass tiles of blue and green and yellow. There are lots of pool toys and it is large and beautiful and lit at night. In the tropics there is no need for heating. There are 4 cushioned loungers and many other outdoor chairs. The barbecue is employed often by our staff, especially to cook the enormous fish, which are carried up the garden path daily by local fishermen. Utility Room: The washing machine and iron are employed by Daya who works with Nandi and after 25 years of washing and ironing she is very good at it. And still enjoys it. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The live in staff change all linen once a week and the towels more often. Other: There is also a study with a satellite TV, computer and broadband access, games, books and pictures.
