About this property

Authentically Restored Ancient Roman Village House

La Belle Ancienne (Ancient Beauty) is nestled in the quaint village of Assignan (936 AD), built on a hill near St Chinian, in the heart of a region steeped in history, as well as wine: the Languedoc. Exposed stonework, large wooden beams, a classic winding staircase from cellar to roof terrace, fireplace, marble sink and original tiles preserve the antiquity and charm of its medieval character. Though authentically restored, you will find modern comforts, such as deluxe bedding and towels, French press, smart tv (internet only) and dvd player. To the north from Assignan, you'll see the Montagne Noire and to the south, the Pyrenees. Wandering through landscapes of vineyards whilst enjoying the scents of lavender, rosemary and thyme, you are on the edge the Parc Natural du Haut Languedoc, with its majestic views. Hiking, cycling, canoeing and horse riding are only a few of the many activities in the area.

La Belle Ancienne - a perfect home in the most gorgeous setting...
From start to finish our week at this incredible property was simply a delight in every way. Christine (the owner) was brilliant to be in touch with, giving us some fantastic recommendations for local markets, eateries and local wine producers. The house itself is perfect - with fabulous facilities but still retaining all it's charm and wonderfully clean and well presented. The village of Assignan is quiet and peaceful but surrounded by vineyards and with 3 restaurants there is plenty of amazing food and wine to enjoy and everyone is so friendly. We found some beautiful walks nearby and were blessed with great weather for the whole time we were there - the Languedoc lends itself to the sun... so beautiful. The whole area is steeped in so much history, which we loved... Cathar country... and there is a fantastic array of guides and maps at La Belle Ancienne to get you started. We had the best week away, I cannot recommend this property more highly.

All you could hope for
We spent a terrific week at Chrstine’s Lovely property. The house really does have everything you could hope for and we really enjoyed our week of self catering. There are lots of great towns and villages within the radius of an hour by car. The one thing we missed was aircon since our visit coincided with a 43C heatwave. The peace and quiet of Assignan was a balm for the soul.

Lovely property with French charm
Chris provided me with all the information I would need before I arrived making the arrival smooth, with no problems. My travel partner and I arrived to a local bottle of wine awaiting us, which he could not open fast enough. Instantly we felt comfortable at Chris' charming home. It was equipped with everything we needed. The kitchen was well equipped and we cooked dinners often, and then ate on the rooftop. This is such a great central location for bike riding, hiking, day road trips, kayaking, village hopping, weekly Markets, dining, wineries, ....so much to offer. I would definitely return and see more!! but this kept us busy for the month!

In one word....CHARMING
Looking at the picture makes me want to return and I just got home a week ago! My travel companion and I stayed at La Belle for 3 weeks and we both had a wonderful experience. The house was furnished and equipped with anything/everything that we would possibly need or want. The night we arrived there was a wonderful bottle of local wine waiting for us. Slept great every night in the quiet, tranquil village of Assignan. We took local bike rides around the surrounding countryside and villages, enjoyed the local outdoor open markets in St. Chinian, enjoyed cooking many nights in the very well equipped kitchen, and then eating up on the rooftop. Listening to the surrounding sounds, the birds chirping, the church bell chimes, etc. were all very quaint and the aromas of the restaurants wafting up the Rue all made for a very sensual experience. It was truly a pleasant vacation!! We also were in a good location to take daily road trips to Carcassonne, Montepelier, Beziers, the Canal de Midi, etc. So much to see in the Languedoc!

Absolutely charming - loved it.
We were delighted with the standard of accommodation at La Belle Ancienne. Everything was there for a comfortable and memorable stay. We were attending a wedding in Assignan and it was a joy to return each evening after a full day's activities and just relax.

I live in the Pacific Northwest of the US - in Washington State - where the land is lush but completely opposite from the sunny climate in southern France. I wear many hats - most of them connecting to the arts (musician, composer, audio engineer, graphic artist and gardener).

Why they chose this property

Being a musician allows me the freedom to travel extensively on my own time and initially provided the impetus to find this lovely retreat in the south of France. The people here are so warm and friendly; the language is beautiful; the scenery is spectacular; the history is amazing; the food superb... I could go on and on!
I chose Assignan because of its tranquility. The village, which sits high on a hill, has an energy that I find easy to create in. I can understand why some of the great artists came to the Languedoc - it is a magical place indeed.

What makes this property unique

When stepping outside the house you only need to walk a few minutes to be in the beauty of the countryside; the many vineyards that surround Assignan go in every direction. You can find dolmens and other ancient artifacts along your journey whilst catching a spectacular view of the Pyrenees or Montagne Noire.
The village itself boasts several 'caves' - some organically produced.
