Overview

About the property

House in Assignan, Herault, Languedoc-Roussillon, France; peaceful location close to Midi canal, mountains, rivers & the Med sea

La Belle Ancienne (Ancient Beauty) is nestled in the quaint village of Assignan (936 AD), built on a hill near St Chinian, in the heart of a region steeped in history, as well as wine: the Languedoc. Exposed stonework, large wooden beams, a classic winding staircase from cellar to roof terrace, fireplace, marble sink and original tiles preserve the antiquity and charm of its medieval character. Though authentically restored, you will find modern comforts, such as deluxe bedding and towels, French press, flat screen monitor, dvd and quality stereo system. To the north from Assignan, you'll see the Montagne Noire and to the south, the Pyrenees. Wandering through landscapes of vineyards whilst enjoying the scents of lavender, rosemary and thyme, you are on the edge the Parc Natural du Haut Languedoc, with its majestic views. Hiking, cycling, canoeing and horse riding are only a few of the many activities in the area.

About Christine Sohre

I live in the Pacific Northwest of the US - in Washington State - where the land is lush but completely opposite from the sunny climate in southern France. I wear many hats - most of them connecting to the arts (musician, composer, audio engineer, graphic artist and gardener).

Christine Sohre purchased this house in 2004

Why Christine Sohre chose Herault

Being a musician allows me the freedom to travel extensively on my own time and initially provided the impetus to find this lovely retreat in the south of France. The people here are so warm and friendly; the language is beautiful; the scenery is spectacular; the history is amazing; the food superb... I could go on and on!

I chose Assignan because of its tranquility. The village, which sits high on a hill, has an energy that I find easy to create in. I can understand why some of the great artists came to the Languedoc - it is a magical place indeed.

What makes this house unique

When stepping outside the house you only need to walk a few minutes to be in the beauty of the countryside; the many vineyards that surround Assignan go in every direction. You can find dolmens and other ancient artifacts along your journey whilst catching a spectacular view of the Pyrenees or Montagne Noire.

The village itself boasts five 'caves' - two being organically produced.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great holiday and loved the house with all its quirky features. We went out and about every day - there was so much to see and do, but we also loved driving back to Assignan to see the flag waving on top of the castle and knowing that we were back 'home' after our days of adventuring.

Thanks once again for making the whole booking process so easy and stress free.

Wonderful Getaway in the Languedoc!

  • 5 of 5

Charming house just steps away from nice, local restaurants.

Five to ten minute drive to farmer's and craft market twice a week.

Many historical sites including castles and ancient towns nearby.

My wife, daughter and I loved our stay! We prepared many tasty meals with the wonderful produce we purchased at the market and found many gifts for friends there as well. When not cooking for ourselves, we visited various restaurants in the area. Great food and friendly local folks to chat with! La Cite Castle in Carcassonne and the ancient town of Minerve were amazing! Many wonderful memories!

I would recommend a visit to Assignan and La Belle Ancienne to anyone! We will definitely be back on our next trip to Europe!

Charming townhouse in rural village!

  • 5 of 5

Very charming house in center of the village of Assignan. Very remote this time of year but great area for walks and bucolic views from the rooftop patio of the fall vineyards, huge bird migrations and for us, the super moon rising over the horizon. Good restaurants in town, surprisingly good for such a small village. Stay was warmed by cozy fire on the cool evenings.

Great place to stay when visiting the Langeudoc

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at La Belle. The two of us stayed there with our adorable but slightly insane Fox Terrier. The latest improvements made to the place are great. The place offers all the comfort and privacy you need if you simply want to relax in peace and quiet, and yet there is a tapas bar and Thai restaurant within about 50 feet of the front door. The surrounding countryside is beautiful with great walks in the wine farms, hills and forests. Assignan is well placed as the Languedoc beaches are an easy drive away, as well as the cities of Beziers, Narbonne and Carcassonne.

We are sure to be going again.

Enchanting & magical

  • 5 of 5

It was more than we could have dreamt of as far as charm, comfort and truly a magical place to stay! Besides the house, the town, had so many places to hike, bike, walk and explore history with a delightful true country beauty. there were a few lovely looking places to eat, although we preferred the charm of the kitchen and cooking. The terrace has a stunning view and you felt like you were in heaven looking over such magical landscape. I can't WAIT to go back! I would HIGHLY recommend this place, because like us you won't want to leave, and you'll be planning on how soon to get back there!

LA BELLE

  • 5 of 5

La Belle is a wonderful charming house! We arrived on Sunday and Manuel the neighbour received us very very nice. He showed us the house and explained everything, about the surroundings, the daily baker who peeps his horn everyday except Monday at the market place at about nine in the morning. La Belle is so nice renovated, that you feel like home in a minute. There is all you need, nothing is missing. The bedrooms, there are two of them, are very comfortable and nice decorated. In the kitchen you finde everything you need and more. The terrace invites you to spend time there in the evening to drink a bottle of a good regional glas of rose wine! You see in everything that the owner loves La Belle and spend a lot of time there! The next city where you can find what you need is St. Chinian. It's about 20 minutes to go. Two days a week there is a market place where you can get fish, vegetables, fruits, meet, clothes soaps and so on. In any case if you love to swim you have to go to Roquebrun, along the river L'ORB there are a lot places to go swimming and to lay in the sun! Absolutely marvellous! The city of Assignan is very clean, little and nice. A place to calm down, you will see!

Thank you Christine for spending our holiday in your wonderful lovely house! Hope we can come again!

Summer 2015

La Belle is a wonderful charming house! We felt like at home in one minute! There is everything you need. The bedrooms are big and lovely created. You see that the owner loves the house and loves to spend time at La Belle. The surrounding is lovely and very clean. A bigger city is reachable in 20 minutes where two days a week a market takes place. At Roquebrun (about 40 minutes to go) there is a river called L'ORB where you can swim! An absolutely must! We will come back! Thank you sooooo much, Christine

Special interest holidays:

Every season has something to offer as far as special interests. There are two main festivals in the village each year (on New Year's Eve and in July) where everyone is welcome for food, wine and merriment!

In September there is Renaissance Festival in the nearby village of Olargues.

Marie (who lives nearby) gives private walking/hiking tours in the surrounding countryside.

You will find horseback riding only minutes away from La Belle Ancienne, day trips on the Midi Canal and many other special interests which can be further investigated by a trip to St Chinian's Centre of Tourism, a ten minute drive from Assignan.

Coast/Beach:

The Mediterranean Sea is only a 45 minute drive on excellent roads from Assignan. Other beaches nearby include Valras plage, Marseillan plage and Cap d'Agde.

As far as river swimming (which is wonderfully refreshing), the Orb is close by and an excellent place for a swim or canoe trip. While hiking around the area you may just find yourself wading in a clear stream along southern France's many natural wonders.

Travel:

International airports are within easy driving distance to Assignan: Beziers, (45 minutes east), Carcassonne (50 minutes southwest). Montpellier (1 hour northeast). Perpignan (1.5 hours south). Toulouse (2 hours northwest). Barcelona (3 hours south).

Also, there is an excellent railway system (SNCF) with TGV connections (super-fast trains) from Paris and beyond to Beziers and Narbonne (both 30 minutes from Assignan). Car hire is highly recommended.

Distances:

In about a 20 minute drive you can find: St Jean de-Minervois (home to the famous white Muscat wine). Bize-Minervois (hosting some of the region's nicest restaurants). Minerve (visible in a ruined 13th century fortress). Canal du Midi (a colossal seventeenth century achievement). Roquebrun (Canoe/kayak down the river Orb).

Carcassonne (known for its medieval-walled city) is less than 1 hr away.

Further Details:

St Chinian (shopping, major market town) is 10 minutes down the hill you will find shops of all kinds, bars and restaurants, banks, supermarket, petrol stations, etc. A delightful Provencal-style market is held every Thursday and Sunday morning under the plane trees in the centre of this lively little town .You'll find fresh local produce - from fruits, vegetables, teas, soaps and spices, to jams, honey and olives, several varieties of breads and cheese, meats and fish, as well as clothing and unique handcrafted gifts.

For an alternative mode of transportation, bicycle hire is available in the village. Sports enthusiasts will also appreciate St Chinian's modern municipal swimming pool with solarium terrace and tennis courts.

Beziers and Narbonne (both a half hour drive) are cities steeped in history and certainly worth a visit. Beziers encompasses a medieval village built in a circular shape around a little hill with its castle looking down on it. Be sure to check out the Tourism Office in St Chinian for things to see and do during the time you are visiting. Bon voyage!
