Village House, heart of the village.

Updated: 16-Aug-2016
House in Fitou, Aude, Languedoc Rossilion, France - Rural French Village

Fitou is world famous for its wine. Its streets are indicative of rural France at its best. The village is situated in the shadow of its chateau and has a number of restaurants, a bar (tabac), bakery, supermarket, pizzeria and numerous wine makers (vignerons) where you can taste and purchase local wine. Road connections are excellent as Fitou is situated near to an exit off the autoroute from Narbonne to Barcelona. The route national gives direct access to Perpignan airport within 20 minutes. 15 mins away is Carrefore a hypermarket, the complex also includes a bowling alley, cinema screens and a go-kart track. Port Leucate 10 mins drive away hosts an Aqua park, adventure park and a marina. The village hosts two walks of 8km and 12km in the surrounding hills, it also accommodates mountain biking. For those climbers amongst you there are ample climbing areas within an easy drive. 30 minutes to the south lies the Spanish border and to the west of the village the Pyrenees.

About the Owner

We both live and work in England with our son. We bought the house in Fitou in 2005, after visiting friends in the region and falling in love with the village.

Great house, great wine, great beaches

  • 5 of 5

A charming french village packed full of Vignerons to stop and sample the delicious wines of the region. Chateau Abelanet was by far our favourite. Locally, there is a boulangerie to buy fresh croissant and baguettes in the morning and a friendly tabac and bar with amazing views for a coffee or cold beer in the afternoon. The village also has a number of great restaurants serving some of the best french food we've eaten, all within walking distance.

The house is full of character from the beautiful tiled floors, roll top bath and the sun-trap roof terrace, but is also well equipped with Wifi, iPod docking station and flat screen TV. The surrounding area had a number of great beaches, all only a 10 minute drive away, where we spent hours sun bathing, building sand castles with the kids and swimming in the gorgeous Mediterranean Sea.

Further afield, the towns of Narbonne and Perpignan with their tree lined boulevards are great for eating, shopping, and are steeped in history. A great holiday location, suitable for families, couples or groups; we will definitely be back as there is lots more to explore, thank you!

Everything regarding the location, facilities and amenities in this lovely village were as described. The house was spotless, well maintained with plenty of space - there were only two of us, but even with 6 or 8 there would still be plenty of room- and the house is light and airy! Booking was easy and the owners provided a service second to none from start to finish. We will definatley book again and will recommend this lovely house with beautiful rooms, lovely terrace - along with the many places to visit, not just in the village, but within less than half an hours drive - to friends and relatives. There are several restaurants in the village that are all nice and the wine tasting at the many Degustation's is a must. The locals are very tourist orientated, friendly and make you feel very welcome.

Fantastic as ever.

  • 5 of 5

This was our third visit to this wonderfully restored town house located in the old town section of Fitou. The accommodation has all the charm you would expect from a house in a small French village but it is not lacking in all the mod cons to make any stay as simple as possible. Large showers, comfortable beds, Wi-Fi (if you feel you can't escape normal life) and an excellent and secure roof terrace for Al-Fresco dining all help you start to switch into holiday mode as soon as you arrive.

The modern kitchen is well equipped or you can barbecue on the terrace. However, if you would prefer to eat out you are in walking distance of fantastic restaurants, a bar and a pizzeria that provides a tasty takeaway should you wish.

When you're out and about you can easily reach a number of interesting towns and cities should you want to explore. As we had such lovely weather (September and still in the late 20s!) we spent much of our time relaxing on the beach. We found that within 10 minutes we could be on a selection of lovely beaches all of which would be suitable for family swimming.

Anyone who likes their wine is also in for a treat. Fitou has some of the best wines in France and a number of Caves in which you can sample the local produce before you decide which you want to buy. Our only regret this trip was that we didn't drive down so couldn't stock up the wine rack at home as we have previously.

This certainly won't be our last visit and we would highly recommend it to anyone.

A lovely house in a beautiful village.

  • 4 of 5

We can't recommend this lovely village house enough! If you're looking for a true French experience -staying in a picturesque part of the charming wine village of Fitou, with its castle visible from just outside the front door (floodlit at night just to add to the allure)and with a bar/tabac and boulangerie just a 5 min.walk away- for baguettes, croissants etc. for breakfasting on the sun-soaked terrace of the house- then this is your perfect place! The house is spotless and has every mod.con. possible - right down to sandwich bags, tin foil and even British power adaptors. It is deceptively spacious and fitted us & our 3 teenage sons, completely comfortably. The 2 showers, toilets and bath were practical and the lovely lighting in the upstairs bathroom makes a long soak in the lovely deep bath a luxurious evening treat. There isn’t much parking immediately outside the house, but this isn't a problem as spaces can be found in neighbouring streets (although you can park briefly outside the house for dropping off luggage / beach accessories etc.) There are also excellent restaurants and wine-tasting 'caves' close-by.There is a supermarket about 3 mins drive away and a huge shopping complex about 20 mins drive away.

The area is great for beaches - especially the natural beauty of Leucate and the unpretentious yet lovely resort of La Franqui (especially if you like windsurfing) is just a 10 min drive away.Excellent beaches at Argeles,St. Cyprien and Canet Plage are great for families- with Aqualand,horseriding,mini-golf and go-karting all available. The ancient walled city of Carcassonne is also well worth a visit. The whole area, steeped in Catalan history,is not to be missed!

From the Owner

We love our roof terrace which is a real sun trap. Two bathrooms (a shower in each) makes life really easy when holidaying with friends. We have 3 restaurants within a 5 min walk of the house with the bar and the castle also within 5 mins. All the living areas are spacious, there is a real feeling of freedom and relaxation.
