The house is a restored 19th century farmhouse built of local stone. As is typical of the area, a small flight of stone steps leads up to the terrace and the upper ground floor living area which you enter through a fine old oak door. The sun rises on this side of the house and sets over the field on the other side. It is a delight to take breakfast on the terrace in the morning sun. The 10m by 5m (salt water) pool is overlooked by the terrace. The huge light and airy attic is accessed by a spiral staircase from the living area and by an outdoor wooden staircase leading from the ground floor up the side of the house. It is a 10 minute drive along country roads to Villeneuve, 20 minutes to Villefranche de Rouergue (Thursday market) and half an hour to Figeac (Saturday market). A 15 minute drive takes you to Cajarc (Saturday afternoon market) and the Lot River. The local wines from Cahors (red) and Gaillac (red, white and rose) are excellent and inexpensive.
I love travelling and I love France. We have had the house since 1991 and have had many wonderful family holidays there. Friends have often come to stay with us there and some come year after year.
I have a husband and 4 children, now grown up and the house and area have been a memorable part of their childhood and adolescence.
Diana Martin purchased this farmhouse in 1991
We bought the property in this area because we were attracted to the untouristy rural qualities of the region, and because we had good French friends who also loved it. The surrounding landscape is fresh and green and yet long hot summers are usually the rule.
The village can be accessed from Toulouse airport (2 hours away), or by car from any of the ferry ports. It is about a 10 hour drive from Caen ferry port. There are also railway stations in the nearby towns.
We enjoy the peace and quiet of the village, the clear night sky full of stars, the liveliness of the market towns, the availability of good food and wine.
The house has a great deal of character which is not easy to describe, but which many people find very attractive. It feels like a much loved home.
Comments from last summer's guests included `We have enjoyed your house, balcony and garden and the peaceful village and surrounding countryside... there is much to see but without the hordes, even in high season' PW 17 - 31/7/10
`Gorgeous house, lovely living space, made use of the outdoor kitchen in the rain. I'm sure we will come again' GC 31/7 - 6/8/10
`We had a wonderful and magical time. The regions and surrounding towns are stunning and rich in beauty. The house is fantastic.' L and P 16-23/8/10
`Thanks, it was a great stay. The children loved the pool and we all enjoyed the summer kitchen on the warmest days of the week. The surrounding villages are lovely, and the village has its own particular charm....We would gladly come back. G and S 23-31/8/10
Travel: Toulouse airport nearly 2 hours away. There re railway stations in Villefranche, Figeac, and Cahors. A car is recommended. It takes c 10 hours to drive from the Channel ports.
