About the property

Beautiful old stone farmhouse in Lorgues, Var, Provence, France - Secluded, Private, Spectacular Views, Private heated infinity pool Wood-Fired Pizza Oven

Secluded stone farmhouse, in peaceful countryside location with private heated infinity pool, own wood-fired pizza oven, an oversized paella pan with burner for hungry appetites, plus a huge four-burner American gas BBQ. Beautiful night lit garden.

No neighbours at all, with spectacular views over the vineyards in the valley below and the mountains beyond. Wonderful walking and exploring on foot or on the bicycles supplied (both adult bikes and for children). Set in 12 acres of mainly olive groves, it is perfect for nature lovers and families and friends who want to get away from it all, but still be walking or cycling distance from the busy market town of Lorgues.

Endless wild thyme and rosemary, junipers, many fruit trees in the orchard, (pomegranate, fig, apricot, apple, almond, cherry, grape vines, persimon, - help yourselves!), wild tortoises on the lawns. Laze in the shady hammock strung between the truffle oaks or catch the summer breeze from the day bed in the outdoor living room. Three are a further 10 sunloungers. The pool has underwater lighting, and the whole garden is floodlit. Even if you have small adventurous children, you can have peace of mind around the pool, which is fenced and has a bolt on the gate so that small children do not run the risk of approaching it without supervision. The pool is heated from April through to October.

When you want to return to the outside world the lovely medieval town of Lorgues is only 3 kilometres away, along the quiet lane, (you can walk, or use the bicycles provided) formerly the old train line taking olives and grapes between Marseille and Nice. In Lorgues there are many wonderful cafes and restaurants and the biggest and best Provencal market in the Var. Lots of Chateaux in the immediate area which offer free wine tasting and tours. Great base for trips to the seaside, St Tropez, Lac St Croix, karting and the water parc at Frejus, adventure parcs, the waterski lake, kayaking, and horse riding and tennis (both in Lorgues itself). We’ve had great fun at the kayaking centre on the prettiest river in Lorgues. They supply kayaks and canoes which trail a watertight picnic barrel keeping your drinks and food cool in the river, and they collect you from your destination and return you to base. We were fascinated to see wonderful cottages by the river, accessible only by boat, and to find an otter swimming quietly beside us.

The house is a lovely destination for families or groups of friends, from the beginning of April through to the end of October for sunshine holidays, and also at other dates in the year for family get-togethers and peaceful Provencale breaks. Christmas usually involves drinks on the terrace, and a log fire in the evenings.

Each month is beautiful in it's own way. From the beginning of April you can usually sunbathe and swim, and the countryside is fresh and green. It's a lovely time to come to Provence; the sun is warm and you can lunch outside the cafes and restaurants in the pretty villages, enjoy cycle rides and walks, and start off the English summer with a South of France tan.

The pool is heated from the first of April right through to the end of October and the terrace is the perfect sun trap. Our region has over 300 days of sun per year, so, together with a lovely warm pool, summer lasts for almost 6 months of the year. Although May, June, July, August and September are the most popular months here in Provence, you can still sunbathe, swim and eat out in April and October.

You can make your own pizzas in the traditional wood fired pizza oven which can also be used as a tandoori oven. For pizzas we usually buy ready mix dough as it’s so easy, then lay the table with whatever toppings your group likes, from chorizo, ham, mushrooms, olives, capers, sardines, anchovies, pesto, herbs .and so on, and everyone makes their own. As well as the traditional tomato sauce bases, try one of the local gourmet recipes using fromage frais as the base and topping with parma ham and fresh figs, or a seafood pizza with fresh calamari and prawns.

The oversize paella equipment is marvellous for cooking outside, under the trees, or in the summer kitchen.. We tend to use variations of the Jamie Oliver paella recipe. The local Intermarche in Lorgues has fresh fish, (including live lobsters and crabs), chicken and chorizo, and everything you could need to make a fantastic paella. It’s proved to be a great success for making all sorts of dishes, usually without a formal recipe, including sauté par-boiled potatoes with pork fillet in a herby cream sauce with mushrooms, steaks and mushrooms, fresh sardines and other fish, and even kedgeree.

We can also put you in touch with an excellent local chef, who will come in to prepare the most magical candlelit dinner party for you under the stars, at a very modest cost..

We have also added this year a huge four-burner American style gas BBQ.

Many people come to Lorgues for the food and world famous restaurants. Prior to your arrival on holiday we will send you our own personal guide to some of the best value restaurants and holiday activities that we’ve loved, everything from the best pizza restaurant to Bruno’s extraordinary truffle restaurant.

We also have a river 5 minutes walk from the house, where you can enjoy ‘wild swimming’. Walk up the river, and you’ll find gorgeous natural swimming pools surrounded by flat rocks to dry off on, or buy fishing nets for the children in Lorgues and catch the tiny fish that live there.

About Heather & Steve

Hello, I'm Heather. My partner Steve and I are lucky enough to own this beautiful house in Provence.

We're both retired, Steve from the City and me from farming near Guildford in Surrey. Our children are grown up and gone, but visit us here as often as they can manage.

I've always been interested in horses, and my children rode, and my son did motor racing.

We both struggle with French but go to classes every week. People here are very friendly and seem to like helping us to learn their language.

We love living in France and have made good friends here.

We have elected not to offer online bookings, but we have been with Owners Direct and HomeAway for 6 years now. Please telephone us (0208 133 5056) and talk to us and we can give you any number of references to reassure you

I'm always happy to answer any questions you might have.

With best wishes, Heather and Steve

Heather & Steve purchased this villa in 2010

Why Heather & Steve chose Lorgues

The house is the last house on the old steam train line, now tarmaced, and a lovely cycle ride or walk into Lorgues, with virtually no traffic. It is well off the lane itself, very private and peaceful, surrounded by olive trees, vineyards and pine forests, and and the pool has lovely open views over the valley.

The terrace at the front is a real sun trap, bordered by masses of pink roses and palm trees. The house 'curves' round the garden and pool, and the huge shady trees, (with hammock) giving the property a real heart. It's not broken up by the pool being off centre or away from the house. It's warm and sociable, and we've provided every outdoor cooking facility we could think of (pizza oven, giant BBQ, massive portable paella pan) so that groups or families can cook together in the lovely garden. We were so surprised to find that all sorts of people who wouldn't normally cook were really keen to have a go - provided it's a fun job, and not a solitary process inside!

The house is only 4 or 5 minutes by car into the bustling market town of Lorgues, with great restaurants and bars, and only 35 minutes from the coast, St Maxime, (for the shuttle ferry to St Tropez), or Frejus, or the Lac St Croix.

We supply bicycles if you prefer to cycle in for the morning bread - it takes about 15 minutes each way.

It's just perfect and beautiful in every way.

What makes this villa unique

We chose this house because it is surrounded by 5 hectares of its' own land.

Although the house and it's surroundings are really quiet, it's only five minutes into the bustling town of Lorgues.

After two years searching for the perfect property we chose this house immediately we saw it. Perfect! We wanted a really beautiful old stone house which wasn't down a very long rocky track/next to the motorway/neighbours 5 metres away/part of a housing estate/next to a military firing range, and so on. We were overjoyed to find this jewel which is a haven of peace!

Guestbook comments from the owner

I could cash in the Brownie points I'd earned for finding the villa. It fulfilled the needs of three generations of my family perfectly. We were reluctant to leave the calm of the villa behind and the sun trap patio ringed with pink roses. James Coney Daily Mail Travel section, 8 Feb 2014

Notes on accommodation: The whole property is secluded and private, with the front of the house facing directly south and providing a very private sun trap of the terrace, garden and pool. The pool is in the garden and near to the house, down three stone steps from the sun terrace at the front of the house. There are no near neighbours, and no passing traffic. It's a perfect house for families or groups of individuals. The wood-fired pizza oven is a great way to enjoy cooking together The pool is heated and is fenced to French legal standard, this is to stop unsupervised small children gaining access. The pool is partly an infinity pool, with spectacular views over the valley, and is L shaped, providing a very shallow part which is ideal for supervised splashing with very small children, with the main part of the pool being deep for swimmers and for fun and games. The property produces its' own extra-virgin, cold press, hand-picked, organic olive oil in December, the olives milled at the local mill. Outside: 200 olive trees on 12 acres. No close neighbours. Spectacular views over the valley. Many fruit trees (help yourselves!) including figs, pomegranates, apricots, grape vines, apples, lemon, almonds and cherries. Lots of wild thyme and rosemary grow on the property for those who wish to cook with Provencal herbs. The property is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and pine woods. There's a table and chairs on the south facing terrace, 10 sun loungers by the pool and a hammock. Heated floodlit infinity swimming pool (5 x 10m). Outside floodlit terrace. Summer kitchen/living room with a real wood -fired Pizza oven. Sun loungers, hammock. Sometimes wild tortoises on the lawn! Plenty of parking. The property is situated at the end of a long private drive off the old Chemin du Trains des Pignes, once the old country railway line taking produce between Marseille and Nice, now a quiet tarmaced lane leading to Lorgues. It's a nice level walk or cycle ride (bikes supplied) to Lorgues. Utility Room: Washing machine, tumble dryer, large upright freezer, large upright fridge. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels including luxury white bath towels, pool towels and all bed linen - included. Professional clean between rentals included. Extra maid service/babysitting etc available at cost. Other: Summer kitchen/ living room, built of natural pine, and stone, designed to provide al fresco living and to catch the warm summer breeze. With covered outside seating, day bed, large farmhouse table and chairs. Real wood-fired pizza oven, gas hob etc.

Utterly Beautiful, Completely Peaceful, Luxurious

  • 5 of 5

After a long search to find the perfect escape from London life for my family, I stumbled across this little slice of heaven. Nestled in the olive groves north west of Nice, this perfect farm house whilst rustic, came with all the mod cons of a modern home - and it felt like a home. Air conditioned against the soaring temperatures of this year, with a swimming pool (heated if necessary) and a perfect little cabignon to situate any family members who want a bit of extra peace and quiet. A bit of a amateur chef, I particularly enjoyed the pizza oven and enormous paella cooking setup. Whilst it is out of the way, it is by no means isolated. Several wonderful towns are within easy reach and the market in Lorgues is an absolute must do, along with its many quite reasonable restaurants. The beaches facing the Mediterranean are also quite accessible, stunning and warm watered. All in all I couldn't recommend this any higher for its sheer beauty, comfort and peace. My family and I thoroughly look forward to returning.

Perfect for all the family

  • 5 of 5

Booking and info all very good and accurate, owners easy to communicate with but not intrusive. Beautiful location, great for exploring this region. Property well maintained and practical, well equipped. We found the place clean but a bit dusty (cupboard doors, mirrors) and in need of a deep clean but all crockery and kitchen equipment was clean and serviceable. Linen clean and bedrooms clean, cool and spacious, bathrooms clean, beautiful bath in ensuite. Wifi was intermittent but good when it worked. Hairdryer, towels, pool towels very useful. Pool was safe, well maintained and welcoming. The grounds are large and lovely to explore, lots of plants, insects and lizards. No near neighbours but a short drive into Lorgues or beyond. Our children were happy to stay at the villa all week ( we had to make them come on a few trips) and found lots to explore and really have some time to relax, cycling , swimming, reading, swinging in the hammock, finding insects they had a lovely holiday. Granny came too and stayed in the seperate cabin which is close to the house, comfortable and private which makes this property great for larger families as everyone has space to relax and enjoy being together. Quiet roads around the property more of forest tracks really but great for cycling or morning runs as very little traffic, flatish and wooded. We went to Tourtour (nice places to sit and have a drink or meal) and entrecasteaux (more limited food wise) both very atmospheric to wander around, Lorgues market on Tuesday am is worth the trip, it starts at 9 am- 12 we parked outside the centre and walked in. A day trip to Sainte Maxime was also worth it, some nice places to eat and you can take a ferry over to St Tropez from here if you want to make a day of it. The inter marche in Lorgues is being re built so ignore this and find the Casino one which has a large Pharmacy opposite it. We should have got a few basic provisions before we arrived at the property at 4 pm on a Sat to last us through to Monday in hindsight. Overall a lovely relaxing holiday with plenty of exploring options if you need them but it's so easy to stay at the villa and chill I wouldn't plan too much!! We would defiantly return to this property but two weeks is needed ideally, we all wanted to stay longer. A great find, I have certainly got extra brownie points with my family for booking this.

Long overdue retreat from life

  • 5 of 5

After many years of promising my wife and family a European vacation, I finally got my "stuff" together and booked for a week what looked like a quaint Stone Villa in a quaint french village. This could not have been further from the truth. We arrived to this beautiful secluded property after a short flight with 3 kids (ages 9-15) and my in-laws (yes I had stalled on this vacation for long enough my wife HAD to bring her parents). As we settled into this small chateau it seemed to have no end. Each child had their own bedroom, my wife and I had our own suite, and the in-laws had their own House! A luxury compared to home. The pool house is self contained with no steps, and can be seen from the kitchen window. And with wifi, satelite television, and a pool, we almost forgot we had kids.

The first night in we decided to try out the wood burning pizza oven.Who doesn't think they can make New York style pizza on their first try? The wood was easily accessible and we started it right up. The kids had a blast designing their own pies, from smiley faces to all bacon no cheese pizza. The next morning, I snuck downstairs hoping I wouldn't wake the kids, only to find them sat on the couch watching a DVD (Fawlty Towers). I can honestly say I don't remember the last time all three kids got up without waking us, not to mention peacefully enjoying each others company. The in-laws ambled in and we enjoyed a fresh breakfast on the terrace. In the afternoon we headed in to Lorgues to visit the village market. Shops have been put up all up and down the main street and you can find everything from a fresh t-shirt to french delicacies , we set up to meet at lunch at one of the restaurants in lower Lorgues and went on our way. My wife and I enjoyed a stroll while picking up local foods to cook(wild boar sausages) for the remainder of the week, while the kids got small souvenirs for their friends. The rest of the week went on like this. My wife and I left the kids with the In-laws (a great use) and cycled into Lorgues on some mountain bikes left by the owners, and easily drove to some fantastic winery's.

The pool was warm, clear, and we all caught the sun. Will be heading back again as soon as we can find the time. Worth the trip, and returned revitalized. Thank you.

"Fantastic Holiday"

  • 5 of 5

Spent the most amazing week in Lorgues with all the family 6 adults and three grandchildren. The villa more than lived up to our expectations and the summer kitchen was amazing. The men made superb pizzas and the paella pan was a triumph. We hardly strayed from the villa as we couldn't bear to leave this wonderful idyll. We all had great fun in the pool, walking down to the river and the more energetic of the party going for bike rides. Thank you Heather and Steve for letting us share your beautiful villa.

The house and garden were stunning

My husband and I stayed with our 4 children in their 20's, son in law and granddaughter aged 20 months

Spent most of each day in the pool and the evenings in the outdoor summer kitchen relaxing over dinner and very competitive card games

Special interest holidays:

It's a great place for collecting wild mushrooms, chanterelles, pieds de mouton, girolles, etc which can be identified as safe by the local pharmacies, particularly in September and October which are beautiful months to be in Provence.

There is a full sized easel in the summer kitchen for painters.

Bikes are supplied for our guests.

Our guests often say that 'pizza night' is great fun. There is a wood-fired pizza oven in the summer kitchen where the whole family can get creative and make their own pizzas. We buy fast easy-mix dough from the supermarket then take the wooden boards and rolling pins, along with a multitude of all the favourite toppings, into the summer kitchen where everybody makes their own to their own recipe. As with BBQ's, it's invariably the men who cook the pizzas. Perfect!

The pizza oven also doubles as a BBQ and tandoori oven.

We also have an oversized paella cooker which you can put under the oak trees for another great family dinner.

St Maxime Beach 35km, St Tropez 40km. There are aquaparks at both St Maxime and Frejus. The Lac St Croix is also a 40 minute drive with restaurants, lavender fields (north end) beaches and water sports, as is the Gorges du Verdon with rafting, canoeing and extraordinary scenery.

By air - Nice or Toulon airports are 1 hour away and are served by Easyjet, Ryanair, Jet2, BA. BMibaby, and Flybe. Also Marseilles airport with Ryan Air.

By train- the TGV stops at Les Arcs, 15 minutes away.

By road - we're well served by the A8 motorway which is only 15 minutes away and connects to Nice in the eastwards direction and Aix-en-Provence and Marseille in the westwards direction.

Lorgues 3km, Tennis courts 2km, boules in Taradeau 10 minutes.

St Tropez 40 km. Frejus/St Maxime 35 Km. Perfume factories in Grasse 55 minutes.

Further Details:

Lorgues is a lively market town, in the heart of the beautiful and picturesque wine and olive producing regions of Provence. Lorgues is famous for having the best Provencale market in the Var. Every Tuesday morning the whole length of the main street is crowded with stalls selling everything from clothes, bags, shoes, patchwork quilts, home made soap, flowers, locally produced vegetables and fruit, honey, nougat, many, many cheeses, live fish, wild boar sausages, hot paella, hot roast chickens, fresh bread, herbs and spices, olives and sun-dried tomatoes, etc, etc.

The town of Lorgues is a 15 minute cycle ride along the quiet, safe and very pretty old route of the steam train (we supply the bikes), or 5 minutes by car.

There are many lovely restaurants in and around Lorgues, some offering great value for money, plus the famous truffle restaurant, Bruno's.

The surrounding countryside is charming and unspoilt, and offers many gorgeous Chateaux which welcome visitors to free tastings and tours.

If you like walking, and exploring on foot, the house is an ideal base. There are endless walks through the pine woods, vines and olive groves, and along the rivers, where you will come across old olive terraces and ruined olive farmers cottages. In the late summer and autumn you can collect many edible mushrooms all around the house, including chanterelle and pieds de moutons. The local pharmacie will identify them for you and advise on whether they are edible or not.

For an action packed holiday, there is horse riding and kayaking nearby, teleski nautique (hurtle round the lake at 30 mph!), two adventure parks where you swing through the trees and zip wire down, along with many other death defying challenges (all with safety harness attached), the Aqua Parc and kart track at Frejus, or hire a self-drive boat at St Maxime and have lunch in St Tropez.

But best of all, just lie back in the hammock and enjoy the peace and quiet beauty that surrounds you.
