Large House with Private Heated Pool

Updated: 24-Oct-2016
Holiday Home in Graignes, near St Lo, Manche, Normandy - Peaceful Location, 40 minutes from Beautiful Beaches

Fernleigh is a large property benefiting from recent and on-going sympathetic modernisation with a large private heated swimming pool and terrace. Located on the outskirts of the village of Graignes-Mesnil-Angot and within easy access to the beautiful walking and cycle routes of the Normandy Peninsula. Graignes-Mesnil-Angot is easily reached from the ports of either Cherbourg (40 minutes) or Caen (75 minutes). A quiet village, with bakery and general store and supermarkets at Carentan and St Lo. Normandy is known for its WWII history and there are many monuments and museums for the discerning visitor - none more so than The Normandy Landings beaches to the north. The owners regret that smoking is not permitted in the property and pets are not allowed.

About the Owner

We live in England and have always had a passion for all things French. Our three children have all but left home. Following many happy holidays in France (with a caravan) we bought the house in 2001 and have been slowly but surely turning it into a 2nd home where we can relax, share it with friends and share it with you - our clients. We like to get to France whenever we can especially for short weekend breaks away from the daily grind and this house in this location is just the ticket. We enjoy walking and cycling and do a lot of both when we are in France.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"....very sad to have had to leave Fernleigh this morning, it is an amazing house and a credit to you in all that you have achieved at the property. Everything was perfect and so well equipped. We have rented properties for many years in Spain, Portugal and France (Provence) and Fernleigh has ticked all the right boxes for us."

"Everything was more than perfect, a wonderful place you have there, yes we had more than we needed and there was nothing we could have wanted for. We won't forget the pool as our 5 year old great-grandaughter learnt to swim in it. All week coaxing her and on the last day she mastered it. We would love to return sometime."

"I just wanted to thank you to you and Alison for the use of your French getaway. Your home is fabulous and we trust we left it as we found it. We wish you and yours many happy happy years there."

A lovely spacious house in a private setting.

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 adults & 2 children stayed at Fernleigh & had a wonderful relaxing holiday.

Journey time a little over 4 hours Poole to Cherbourg then the drive to the property taking less than an hour on very good roads.

On arrival the house really delivers the ‘wow’ factor! Pulling up outside the size of the place really hits you, it's HUGE. Inside we found treats in the kitchen including French sticks, pate, cheese & wine. All very welcoming.

The house is lovely & clean & really spacious. Good sized bedrooms, with plenty of room for the 2 travel cots we took along. The kitchen was well equipped with all mod cons, only thing we needed to supply was our food! Excellent guidance about where to shop in the welcome pack & we took advantage of this advice soon after our arrival.

Fernleigh is well positioned for exploring the Normandy region & visiting the local beaches & WW2 visitor’s centres, a very humbling & in our view, essential part of the trip. The soft sand beaches are so vast, clean & beautiful it's hard to imagine the contrast to their fairly recent history.

We also visited Mont Saint Michelle, a FABULOUS day out thoroughly enjoyed by us all. Lots & lots of steps to climb, but well worth it for the vista from the top and the delights as you wind your way down the inside of the structure. It is the most enchanting place, an absolute must during a stay in this region.

In addition, we took trips to local markets & visited Barfleur, taking our return journey along the coast & stumbling upon Saint Vaast which we really liked, stopping here for lunch & enjoying a lovely view over the marina whilst eating the freshest mussels. We also spent a quiet afternoon sipping coffee in the square in Isigny-sur-Mer, another very pretty little town nearby.

When we were not out & about we spent most of our time in the wonderful pool. Our grandsons had such fun in there. It really is so lovely & was great to have use of all of the ‘toys’ in the pool house too! Definitely our favourite part of the whole holiday was just having fun in & relaxing poolside.

We spent our evenings taking full advantage of the huge array of board games we found, such good fun, leaving no requirement to watch any of the wide selection of dvd’s on offer for viewing.

All in all, Fernleigh offered a great opportunity to experience a real slice of French life. We all had a fabulous time and would have no hesitation in recommending it to family and friends.

From the Owner

We chose this area of France because it is easy to get to and it is steeped in history - if you like World War II History, then this is the area for you. Whilst the village of Graignes is not a typical "chocolate box" French village it is a normal, everyday agricultural working village. The main road users are tractors with the occasional cows, sheep and the occasional school bus. To hear the sound of donkeys and chickens in the morning is a real change from cars and lorries. The house is 40 minutes drive from the Normandy landing beaches to the north and beautiful long sandy beaches to the west. It has its own heated pool and there is a Baker and General Store in the village. Supermarkets can be reached in Carantan and St Lo - both within an easy drive.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Caen at 50 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Village Bar at 1 Kilometres Nearest Ferry : Cherbourg at 40 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Utah Beach at 15 Kilometres Car: recommended

Utah beach is 45 minutes to the north by car and a little further along the northern coast are many beautiful (and safe) wide sandy beaches - many of which featured in the Normandy landings of 1944. The west coast of Normandy is also about 45 minutes by car and there too you will find a selection of beaches and coastal towns from Granville in the south to Carteret further north.

Graignes-Mesnil -Angot is easily reached by car from the ports of either Cherbourg (40 minutes) or Caen (75 minutes). A car is essential due to the remote location of the property. There is a small airport at Caen served by some of the smaller airlines - check with your local travel agent for details - and if travelling by air, car hire is essential.

Carentan - 8km. St Lo - 12km. Mont Saint Michel - 50km. Coutances - 20km. Caen - 70km. Bayeaux - 35km.

Further Details:

Guests will find a number of leaflets in the lounge describing local places of interest or days out. There is outdoor go-karting at Mont-Martin en Graignes (just off the N174 3 kms to the north of St Jean de Daye). There are supermarkets and other retail therapy outlets in both Carentan and St Lo. Cherbourg has a fantastic aquarium and large hypermarkets to satisfy the 'wine and cheese to take home' requirements. Villedieu les Poeles is worth a visit for brass and copper artifacts as well as a traditional Bell Foundery. There are two great markets. St Lo on Saturday mornings and Carentan on Monday mornings. These are fascinating places and the place to purchase the most amazing selection of Fresh Fruit, Vegetables and Seafood. Do you like Mussels? Then this is the place to get them. Most banks in St Lo have cash machines that accept UK cards and most ATMs have English instructions. However, if you intend to use you credit card in supermarkets and some smaller shops then we recommend you keep your passports with you as these are sometimes asked for as proof of ID.

From the Owner

Fernleigh is a large 4 bedroomed farmhouse dating from about 1800. Built from COB - a traditional building material - it has been surrounded by block walls to re-enforce the structure and a new roof was added in 2008. It is modern on the inside with a beautiful farmhouse kitchen/diner with original structural oak beams. There is also a large lounge on the ground floor, whilst upstairs there are 4 large bedrooms - 2 with en-suite facilities - and a large family bathroom. Outside there are ample lawn space and a superb private heated swimming pool (10 x 5m) with spacious terrace area. The pool is treated using natural product filters therefore minimising the use of Chemicals. There is plenty of poolside furniture, inflatables and toys for the kids whilst in the pool.

  • Notes on accommodation: A small electric heater is provided in every room but normally these are not required. The lounge and entrance hall benefit from under floor heating and there is a log burner in the kitchen along with a supply of logs (to the side of the house). The house is suitable for children although guests are responsible for their own safety whilst around the pool area. We also recommend children are not encouraged to sit on the wide welcoming window ledges even though safety chains have been fitted to these windows on the 1st floor. There is a travel cot available for use with small babies but there is no travel cot linen, please bring your own. Outside: The private pool is heated and has a secure cover and it is French Law that dictates this cover must be in place whenever the pool is unattended. Additionally, there is an outside shower (heated) which we ask guests to make use of prior to swimming. There are plenty of items of poolside furniture for the use of the guests and a selection of toys for children. Whilst using the pool and terrace the owners ask that guests make use of the plastic glasses and crockery found in the large cupboard in the kitchen - safety first! The external staircase leads to the roof void which - as yet - has not been renovated. The stairs can be slippery when wet so we would recommend caution and not to allow children to play on these stairs. Utility Room: Washing machine, tumble dryer, large sink and downstairs WC. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and bed linen are included. Linen is changed at the conclusion of every guest stay period and the house is given a thorough clean at the same time (although we do expect guests to keep the house clean throughout their stay). Other: Above the stairs is a small landing containing a collection of books that you might like to borrow during your stay. The external staircase leads to the roof void which - as yet - has not been renovated.
