La Chouette - Traditional 18th Century Normandy Farmhouse

Updated: 13-Oct-2016
Farmhouse in Remilly sur Lozon, near St Lo, Manche- Tranquil location, near local village, within easy reach of sandy beaches & D -Day beaches

La Chouette is perfect for enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the Normandy way of life, leafy country lanes surround the property and is ideal for walking and cycling. The house and garden are not overlooked and offer privacy, peace and serenity. The house retains many of its original features, beamed ceilings, terracotta and oak floors, original fireplace in kitchen with wood burner.

The large kitchen is well equipped and it has the original terracotta floors, beamed ceilings, large farmhouse table seating 8 and wood burner for the colder months. The window overlooks the fields at the front of the house. The lounge has 2 large sofas for comfortable seating, Freeview TV/DVD player with plenty of DVD to choose from , a workstation/printer and the two large windows overlook the gardens and fields.

Head up the curved staircase to the bedrooms, which all have the orignal oak flooring. The largest bedroom has a king size bed, plenty of storage, seating and an additional day bed, which can be used as a full size single extra bed if required. Two large windows overlook the fields and meadows.

The middle bedroom has a double bed, wardrobe and storage facilities, overlooking the fields and meadows.

The single bedroom over looks the country lane and fields, with storage facilities.

There is parking and secure gated gardens infront of the house: venture past the barns to find the large fully enclosed garden with play area. BBQ, bikes and garden games are all at the house.

Located in the Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin Natural Park, La Chouette is excellent for stargazing as light pollution is at a minimum, and for keeping watch for our resident barn owl.

Situated in an excellent area to explore Normandy within easy reach you'll find: the D Day landing beaches, the peaceful sandy beaches of the west coast, and the local historical towns of Carentan, Coutances and Bayeux. For cycling enthusiasts Normandy is hosting the Grand Depart of the Tour de France 2016. Stages 1 and 2: from Le Mont St Michel to Utah Beach and St Lo to Cherbourg are all within a short drive, or a cycle, from La Chouette. Normandy has a total of 310 miles of cycling paths, there is something to suit all levels of ability from day trips to longer breaks.

The local village of Remilly sur Lozon, 15 minutes by foot along country lanes, or 4 minutes by car, and is perfect for basic shopping needs, with a boulangerie/bakery, butchers, convenience stores, play park and tennis courts. The larger towns of St Lo and Periers are just a 20 minutes drive away on easy roads, and have restaurants, bars, cafes, banks and boutique shopping. Activities including golf, fishing, horseriding, swimming and cycle routes are all found locally.

There are plenty of tourism guides and maps available at the house, however should you wish to book or arrange a specific tour, activity, or if you would like information on opening hours, access, parking etc. please don't hesitate in contacting us, we will be happy to assist.

About the Owner

Welcome to La Chouette, we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

We bought La Chouette in 2002 and after eight years of great holidays and some renovations, we decided to let the house as a holiday home. We lived in Clermont Ferrand in the Auvergne before returning to England in 2013 and we currently live in south east England, with our three cats. We hope you have a great holiday, Laura & Jerome

I just wanted to tell you what a wonderful time we had at the La Chouette. Your place was ideal, and we all enjoyed it immensely. Your pictures on the Web site more than accurately portrayed the farmhouse. We all were awed by how much it was even more than what we expected. K.Brock USA

We wish to thank you for the lovely cottage and the information you gave to us.The cottage was just right and have everything and more which we needed.Again many thanks for the cottage and help, hope to stay there again soon. M. Brogden

Beautiful home from home

  • 5 of 5

Great property for my family and I, especially as we have a large dog to accommodate. The very large garden was super for my son and his dog to run around in.

As we walked into the house a bottle of wine was waiting for us on the table. The house is clean, tidy, spacious, and every minute detail has been catered for. When I forgot my hair straighteners, I was really annoyed with myself, but the day was saved when I saw that even this had been thought of by the owners

The bedrooms were large and inviting and the bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in when on my holidays.

The house is within easy access to both coasts which we visited every day of our 2 week stay.

The vet in Perrier ( the nearest town) was excellent and cost 54 euros for a check up and worm tablets, which is the going rate.

A 9 hole golf course is only 10 minutes away, so we made the most of this on the evenings.

All in all the perfect house and location for our needs.

The owners have been lovely all the way through and made the booking very easy. Thankyou for allowing us into your home.

Happy days

Sharron, Ken, Joshua and Loki the dog.

Lovely traditional farmhouse in peaceful location.

  • 5 of 5

A fabulous little gem in the Normandy countryside, La Chouette looks exactly like the photographs and we will no doubt return.

The garden is large and genuinely fully enclosed so our dogs could run and play without any concern from us, as well as being wonderfully quiet and peaceful. Large outside table and chairs not shown in photos plus a couple of sun loungers.

Really well equipped large kitchen in which we found everything we could have wanted and more. The picnic hamper with plastic plates, bowls etc was a useful extra.

Large and comfortable lounge with English television channels was a bonus for the evenings when we weren't playing one of the many board games provided.

Very pretty staircase to the bedrooms - but possibly not suitable for very elderly or infirm ( although the spritely 82 year old we had with us managed perfectly well ! Just be aware they are steep, narrow and twist )

Master bedroom is huge with most comfortable bed I've come across in a long time. Lovely views to wake up to and a good sized second bedroom (bigger than it looks in the photo) with smaller double bed. Again slightly uneven floors as you would expect in an old barn so beware of those extra glasses of red wine in the evening !!

Large shower room and everything clean and well managed.

Our booking was handled swiftly and efficiently and later questions, even after we arrived, were also replied to quickly and efficiently by Laura - thank you.

Village nearby for bread, pharmacy and a little shop which sells most things. St Lô and Periers also within 10 - 15 minute drive with a typical huge hypermarket at St Lô.

Beaches at Pirou and on Avenue de la Mer outside St Mer Eglise were great for dogs. Vast and deserted - especially at low tide.

Omaha beach also allows dogs of the leash slightly further down from the monument.

The teenagers we had with us tried the high trees rope wire 'Forest L'Aventure' outside St Saveur Le Viscomte. Really super ..... Good value for money with the red and black routes being very challenging. Great climbs for little ones too.

Arromanches is a great day out and I never fail to be moved by the 360* Museum on the hill. For examples of air strike power visit Point du Hoc.

The vet in Periers spoke English for return passport jabs.

All in all, a real gem and I echo someone else who says I'm not sure why I'm letting thiscat out of the bag. For pretty, peaceful, well equipped and central this is a highly recommended, great find.

Charming and lovely farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

The farmhouse was almost like second home. The owners have paid attention to detail and there were arrangements made for everything that you can think off ! The garden was really nice and our dog enjoyed it a lot :) and we had fun too.

The best part is it is quite close to all the D-Day attractions. It was a lovely holiday. Would definitely recommend!

Lovely holiday

  • 4 of 5

Myself and my family of four stayed in the lovely farmhouse for two weeks, the house us a traditional French farmhouse with stone floor in the kitchen with a fabulous woodburner, the kitchen is well equipped, the large living room has plenty of space and a huge amount of DVD's, games and books, we loved playing Trival Pursuit!! All the bedrooms are have comfy beds and the master bedroom is very large. The garden is huge and offers plenty of room to play, we took our badminton net and enjoyed many games. The farmhouse is only a 30min drive to all the D.Day Landings and about an hour to Pegasus Bridge, 10mins to St Lo where you will find plenty of supermarkets, the beaches of Piru are 30mins and have plenty of rockpools, we can highly recommend this lovely accommodation

Fantastic Property in Normandy

  • 5 of 5

We popped over to Normandy for the 70th Anniversary of D Day. The house La Ferme de la Chouette was in a great location a few miles south of Carentan, so not far from the main D Day attractions around Utah and Omaha beaches. The house was fantastic and Luke and Maria were great when we booked allowing us to stay for the days we wanted so we could make the most of the celebrations.

La Ferme da la Chouette is a great house in an idyllic location - we would recommend to anyone and would definitely stay there again ourselves.

Just got back from a wonderful week over half term. The house was a lot larger than expected and easily accommodated us all (mum dad, and Josh 10, Lily 9, Chloe 6). The garden is wonderful and the kids were delighted and fully entertained by the bikes, swings and slide. Kitchen has everything you could want, which made preparing evening meals a breeze as you looked out onto the meadow opposite, which was occupied by a number of young male cows who were very entertaining as was the dog opposite, who despite his load bark turned out to be a very friendly fellow. Would highly recommend you support the local trade in town. My "pigeon French" was greeted by a very warm welcome. The Bakery is great and the butcher exceptionally friendly and helpful and does great sausages. The weather was a little unkind, but as we were located approx. 30-45 mins from some great chateaus and walks this didn't seem to be a problem at all. The D-day beaches of Omaha and Utah are a must, the coast over at Pirou great fun for the kids and the rock pooling. Already looking in the diary to sort out a return visit next year.

An excellent place begin the story……
