Stone Built Cottage in a small Village Near the Coast

Overview

Property

Updated: 06-Aug-2016
Cottage in O Castro ( Near A Guarda,) Galicia, Spain

Renovated stone built house with two bedrooms. Ideal for the outside summer life her in Galicia as the courtyard has a barbecue and a covered area for shade. There is a restaurant at the end of the road and other cafe/bars within reasonable walking distance. A short walk up the road leads to the woods where aromatic eucalyptus and pine provide shade for walking in the hills. Perfectly situated to reach the local beaches just a few minutes drive away. The resort town of Baiona is twenty minutes up the coast with all the usual attractions and where you can take a ferry to one of the islands of Cies, a natural park with beautiful white beaches. In the port of La Guardia (A Guarda) there are lots of good restaurants serving tapas or the excellent local seafood and shellfish. For only a few euros you can take the car ferry to Portugal to explore the long white beaches and market towns.

About the Owner

Having both spent many years living in West Wales it was time for a change. Our children were grown up with lives of their own so we set off on a voyage of discovery. It was 2002 when we left to walk the ancient pilgrimage trail to Santiago. For several weeks we walked across the mountains and plains; drinking in the scenery and stunned by the power and beauty of the country. In the final stages of the journey we climbed the last range of mountains and into Galicia. It felt like coming home.

Lovely stone cottage with ample space in living room and kitchen. Great outside terrace with sun and shady bits. Loved the extensive book collection. Internet ok - best in living room. The sea was freezing but the local river fabulous for swimming and picnic under the eucalyptus trees. Karen and Suzy very welcoming.

A great stay

  • 5 of 5

The location is superb with two contrasting countries with 10 minutes drive! The owners were welcoming and attentive to our needs. The cottage was exactly as described and the number of restaurants/attractions/beaches enough to keep us busy for much longer than the short two weeks we had to enjoy the place. You'll need to leave your Rolls Royce and Ferrari behind as the last bit is a tight squeeze!

A great + for seafood and suckling pigs/lamb/goats and the local people either side of the border were very friendly

Cottage in O Castro Review

  • 5 of 5

We (family of 5) really enjoyed our stay here, lovely views from the balcony, a well equipped kitchen with bits of all the basics - salt, oil, vinegar, herbs, spices, milk etc. Bedrooms are small but beds are comfortable. Good collection of DVDs, wifi but pity we couldn't get any local TV. Outside there is a BBQ and a shower and seating to eat al fresco, the parking is tricky as it is a tight corner and a steep hill. We walked into town from here - less than 15 mins. We flew from Porto which was about 1hr 30mins drive. VG menu del dia from Bar Galicia. Good value for high season.

Location

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

Five minutes drive to small Atlantic beaches at area Grande where there is also a good restaurant and a bar with a garden. Ten minutes drive to Molinos large beach at the river mouth. The famous beaches in Baiona are a twenty minute drive up the coast road. Across on the ferry to Portugal will lead you within half an hour to many more white sandy beaches. The river beach at Eiras is about a twenty minute drive. There are tapas bars or restaurants near all the beaches.

Travel:

Vigo airport is about an hours drive served by Iberia) Porto airport is about 1 hour 20 minutes and is served by Ryanair, Easyjet and TAP. The airport at Santiago de Compostela is about an hour and forty five minutes. Cheapest flights are usually to Porto.

Distances:

The closest town, La Guardia which sits under Mount Tecla is just a five minute drive. Lots of good restaurants at the port there. The old cathedral town of Tui sits on a hill overlooking the river about 25 minutes drive. The city of Santiago de Compostela, destination of pilgrims, can be reached in less than an hour and a half. Villanova de Ceveira in Portugal is well worth a visit, about fifteen minutes by car. Take a bus from the village to La Guardia or Rosal and leave the car behind.

Further Details:

Only 1.5km from the house is a good supermarket. Banks, shops and restaurants are friendly but this is not the south of Spain so don't expect everyone to speak English. You can take a ferry or catamaran to the Island of Cies in the Ria de Vigo. Spend the day walking in the natural park there or relaxing on the beaches. Further up the coast of Galicia are many more seaside villages and long beaches. In Summer there is a food or wine fiesta celebrated somewhere in Galicia every week - a great chance to try something new. If you take the ferry, or drive across the friendship bridge, Portugal offers surfing, beaches, markets and a culture similar but strikingly different to Spain. The largest outdoor market in Europe is in Barcellos (Thursday) Villanova de Cevera on Saturday, Valenca on Wednesday and many others. Buses run from La Guardia to Vigo, Tui etc.
