About John Rivers

We are in our 60's and consider ourselves semi retired. Our working life in England was split between London and Gloucestershire in the antique jewellery business.

Although our French is pretty basic (some more basic than others) we have many french friends and Susie is a local councillor. We thoroughly enjoyed our first full season and met many charming people who were very kind in their comments about La Petite Grange. We like to keep a low profile but are always on hand if needed.

John Rivers purchased this cottage in 1980

Why John Rivers chose Sainte-Innocence

We bought the property 25 years ago as the fulfilment of a dream to have a second home in France. The peace, tranquility and pace of life were compelling attractions as was the gentle rolling countryside and soft limestone buildings. When we decided to move to France permanently we embarked on a major building program, upgrading and extending our original holiday home, which is now a four bed room gite and converting two barns in the grounds to a one bedroom gite and our two bedroom house. This winter we upgraded and extended the sun terrace around the salt water pool and installed solar heating , thereby making swimming from May to November feasible.

Wonderfully equipped and clean small gite with helpful and friendly owners

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a trip to this wonderful gite. We stayed in the little gite and were welcomed warmly by John and Suzie plus Orla and Maisie their two dogs. The gite itself is well equipped with a more than adequate kitchen, fabulous shower and one of the most comfortable beds we have ever slept in. It is beautifully furnished in a country style, which includes a number of authentic French pieces lovingly included into the decor.

It is difficult to find anything wrong with this lovely place which included use of a shared pool. It is quiet and peaceful, surrounded by sunflower fields. We were lucky to go at a time when the cherry trees were loaded with fruit, and Suzie kindly left a bowl of fresh cherries outside our door a couple of times.

We would recommend this gite for a quiet, peaceful and laid back holiday

Great property, lovely hosts - real home from home

  • 5 of 5

We are just back from 3 lovely weeks at La Vieille Grange. This is a superb property, very spacious and well equipped in large gardens with a fantastic swimming pool. It is in a very small village so you need a car but it is well positioned to explore the surrounding area, with lots of interesting things to see and do. John and Susie are very friendly, helpful and hospitable should you need them, but equally conscious of your privacy if you don't. Thoroughly recommended for a relaxing, enjoyable stay.

Excellent gite run by lovely people

  • 5 of 5

We are repeat visitors to Les Vielles Granges over several years. It it is hard to imagine a better gite or nicer owners than John and Susie Rivers anywhere in the Dordogne ( or anywhere at all).. They must blush every time they read the comments left by all their visitors. As a couple we have stayed in the smaller gite and and. with another family, also taken the large one which swallowed up four adults and two teenagers with ease. The facilities, especially the pool, are first rate. The gites are well equipped both inside and out and the decor is charming and in excellent taste. It is an excellent base from which to visit the bastide towns of the Dordogne; take a boat out on the river; eat at good restaurants ( try the Relais d'Ancien Gare at Issigeac) and visit the local markets, especially Eymet on Thursday mornings. For those with small children the garden and pool, set of swings and table tennis offer suitable diversions.

Excellent Gite

  • 5 of 5

Plenty of space for 2, clean, nicely furnished and decorated, friendly welcome with essentials provided in fridge, spacious site shared with owners and one other (larger) gite. Good-sized heated outdoor swimming pool. Set in pleasant rural hamlet within easy reach (by car) of shops, vineyards, golf, interesting sites, good restaurants.

Not particularly easy to find; tip - it's in the hamlet of Lestang (near St Innocence) on the road between St Innocence and Puyguilhem. 2 friendly resident dogs and 1 cat, unobtrusive.

Holiday 27th July - 10th August

  • 5 of 5

La petite grange is a wonderful gite. It is very well appointed with everything that you would require to have a wonderful holiday. The site is really quiet which suited us and you have access to a nice sized swimming pool which is kept really clean. John & Susie are excellent hosts and very accomodating. You rarely see them, but are always available should you require help. There are several beautiful towns and villages close by, but Eymet is within 10 mins and has all that you could require, supermarket, fuel stations, restaurants, and a beautiful centre which hosts a twice weekly market which is a must. This place is a hidden gem and if you like a nice peaceful, tranquil setting for your holiday. Then this is the place for you. Top marks John & Susie :-)
