About the property

Boutique Riad (Guesthouse) in Marrakech, Morocco - Located in the Medina - Private Roof Terrace

Riad Al Janoub is an ancient merchant's house which has been lovingly restored in an elegant and contemporary Moroccan style. The 4 stylish and comfortable bedrooms are arranged around a courtyard with palm trees and a beautiful mosaic fountain. All rooms are ensuite with air conditioning and ipod holders. The rooms are decorated with hand carved furniture, rugs, mirrors and ornaments sourced from the souqs of Marrakech. All bathrooms are decorated using traditional tadalekt with hand beaten copper wash basins and beautiful Moroccan lanterns. The roof terrace, with its orange trees, has a large covered seating area and 3 sun loungers - the perfect place to relax in the sunshine or enjoy an evening sun-downer. Our housekeeper and chef, Amina, will greet you on arrival with mint tea and prepare you a traditional Moroccan breakfast each morning. Lunch or dinner can also be provided on request, served to you in the dining room, salon, or by candle light on our beautiful terrace.

About Riad Al Janoub

I am a primary school teacher and I live with my husband and 2 children just north of London.

Riad Al Janoub purchased this house in 2009

Why Riad Al Janoub chose Diour Jdad

There are many parts of Morocco which we love but Marrakech has always been special to us. It's a great place to wander and there are so many chic restaurants and bars in which to spend the evenings.

What makes this house unique

When we first saw Riad Al Janoub it was love at first sight. It's an ancient merchant's house which has been renovated in traditional Moroccan style with a courtyard and small fountain but with all mod-cons too. The 4 bedrooms are all ensuite with air-conditioning and iPod holders. We also have a lovely roof terrace which is completely private and great for sun-bathing or an early evening sun-downer!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"A magical experience"

We've just come back from a wonderful 2 night stay at the lovely Riad Al Janoub. Everything from the email information from Carolyn, pick up at the airport from Hassan, to the help and service from Sarah and Amina was amazing. We'd booked the Urjuwani room and were welcomed by a roaring fire at the end of the bed. The room was so romantic with its traditional bath and the little touches like ipod speakers and candles were also really appreciated. Amina's breakfasts on the terrace were lovely. Whilst it's about a 15 minute walk to the square, it's nice to not be on top of it. Marrakesh is a very vibrant place and Riad Al Janoub is a true haven away from it all (Feb 2010)

"Bijou Palace"

A very pretty little house, beautifully restored with aircon and plentiful bedding. Bedrooms were surprisingly spacious and afforded quite a lot of privacy from each other. Both manager and housekeeper were extremely helpful; breakfasts were lavish and delicious (Feb 2010)

Nice Riad in the Medina in Marrakech

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Riad al Janoub and especially found Carolyn and James incredible helpful with a host of information before our trip.

Brahim and Amina are extremely friendly and helpful and Amina cooked us fresh bread, pancakes and/or cakes every day for breakfast (different every day) which was delicious. One thing we weren't expecting though was that Brahim (the caretaker) would be staying in the riad every night so we never felt that we quite had our own space, which for some people might not be an issue at all but for us was a little disappointing. In some ways this meant it felt a little more like staying in a hotel, but this may be welcomed by other guests. Certainly Brahim and Amina were delightful and welcoming so it's in no way a comment about them.

It's a fair walk from the main square (about 25 mins) which meant that once we'd left for the day we tended not to come back until the evening. Consequently we made very little use of the lovely roof terrace except for breakfast. It's an easy and interesting walk in though so it wasn't really a problem for us.

It was quite cold in the evenings during our stay so we were very grateful for the heaters in the bedrooms. The communal sitting space downstairs though is an open courtyard and we had to keep requesting firewood for the evenings as it would have been very cold without a fire.

Cafe Arabe, on the way into the square was a great place to stop off for drinks, and we also enjoyed the Marrakchi on the edge of the square. The food from the stalls in the square was good, inexpensive and with a great atmosphere. And don't miss the gorgeous coconut 'macaroons' sold in the square (usually by women with a single tray) for 1 DH each, which were absolutely delicious and eaten in fairly large quantities by the four of us!

All in all, a good authentic experience of staying in a Moroccan house in the medina in Marrakech.

Many thanks to Carolyn and James.

Owner's Response: Hi Cathy Thanks for the review and very glad you enjoyed your stay. As for Brahim staying overnight, this is what happens at most Riads which are in effect Moroccan-style B&Bs - in other words, staffed accommodation. Sometimes our guests prefer not to have the staff on hand in which case Brahim is very happy to leave in the evening - if you book exclusive use it really is a matter for the guests at the time. February can indeed be cold - glad you made use of the open fireplaces! Many thanks once again for staying with us. Best wishes James RIAD AL JANOUB

A great Riad to stay while in Marrakech

  • 5 of 5

This was a great Riad to stay in. It has a very family like atmosphere, located in the Madina very easy to finad. The hosts are awesome and will meet you with hot mint tea upon arrival. The breakfast if fresh every day. The accommodations are very nice with private bathrooms. There is a terrace on the roof that can be used when the weather is good. We enjoyed our stay there and definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic stay in Marrakech. I know that we will stay at this Riad next time we come to Marrakech at a very reasonable price. The owners also arranged for us to be picked up and dropped off from airport so that we do not have to worry - and the price for this service is super reasonable.

Thank you for a wonderful hospitality.

Essaouira is about 3 hours by car. The blue and white coastal resort has its own medina and is acquiring an increasing reputation for surfing and wind-surfing. Transfers (for either day trips or overnight stays) can be arranged on request.

Marrakech Menara (RAK) is a modern international airport and just 7 miles or 10 km away from the medina. We are happy to arrange transfers to and from the airport on request.
