Guestbook comments from the manager
When we opened the door of 18 Rue de Jerzual, it was like stepping into another time and we loved that. We experienced the ambiance of a 14th century townhouse with the conveniences of 21st century living, especially the modern, well-equipped kitchen, spacious laundry and unusual bathrooms. We felt like locals stepping out into Rue de Jerzual from where it was a comfortable walk to the shops, the library for Internet access, and other historic sites. From nearby off-street parking, there was easy access to routes leading out of Dinan. At the end of each day, 18 Rue de Jerzual was a very nice place to come home to. Gavin and Alethea, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
In addition to the excellent accommodation, there is a lovely garden where we had breakfast in the morning and relaxed with a glass of wine in the evening. My family and I were quite sorry when our stay in Dinan came to an end. Would stay there again anytime!

Delightful Medieval Town House in centre of Dinan
A charming house in a stunningly beautiful French town. The house could not be better situated, in the heart of Dinan and so full of character, it is hard to know where to begin. Although obviously a very old property, it has been sympathetically brought up to date and offers everything one could require for a self-catering stay. That said, there is an abundance of good eating places within a short stroll of the house. Unusually for a “town house” the property also has a delightful sunny garden. Helpful and friendly Manager - thanks Sean! Overall, I cannot recommend 18 Rue de Jerzual more highly.
Living in History
Dinan is one of our favourite places in France. We love the history, the food and the people. So, on our 4th visit, what better way to experience this than to stay in an ancient townhouse in an ancient street.
Our party consisted of two mature couples, arriving by car. We were able to drive to Rue Jerzual and park outside the townhouse to unload. Sean helped us with the luggage and then we followed him to the multi storey car park about 300 metres away. We had a weekly multiple entry pass for €25 which made parking both convenient and inexpensive. It is a relatively flat walk from the park to the house which is just as well because 1 of our party has trouble walking uphill and another has trouble walking downhill. The house is actually on 4 levels with the laundry and store room on the street level, then up a small flight of steps to the lounge, kitchen, dining and outdoor garden. Up another level to a very large bedroom with spa bath and toilet and another bathroom with a fabulous short, deep bath, shower and toilet. The second bedroom is up another level, being careful to crawl the last 2 steps to avoid the low beam. Once into the top bedroom, it is huge and could probably take an extra 5-6 beds without a problem. The house was well appointed, comfortable and worked well, especially considering that we were living in history, with the myriad of features this implies, like wonky floors, low beams and twisting staircase. There was plenty of hot water and the wifi worked well.
We spent a week living here in July without a/c and with the windows and skylights open didn’t feel especially hot at any time.
One of our favourite pastimes was watching the people walking below on rue Jerzual, taking photos of the house with us leaning out of the lounge window. We had a large choice of restaurants within 100 metres of the house but we only dined out 1 night at Creperie Ahna, such was the produce available at the market and the large well equipped open plan kitchen, dining room, lounge. We spent our days walking around the town and the lower port, driving out to places like Cancale, Josselin, Rennes, and Ploumanac’h on the Cote de Granit Rose. A very relaxing week. We will return.
Perfect for a family
We are old timers in Dinan with family in the area so the beauty of the town is no longer a surprise - but this house is the best we've stayed in and am somewhat reluctant ro promote it too much in case we can no longer get a booking :-). We had a wonderful stay and are about to book again.
Perfect location in the centre so you dont need a car for shopping and eating. House plenty big enough to cope with 2 teenage boys who loved the attic room and had their own space. Great family sized lounge room for time together with English TV - and quality internet for all that browsing and facebooking.
Spacious comfortable duplex in the heart of Dinan
We were delighted with our choice of accommodation in Dinan in 2015, it offered everything we wished for a wonderful holiday in a special part of France.
Rue Jerzual is a typical charming ancient steep cobblestone street which links the old port with Dinan town centre, a MUST walk. The house is situated towards the top end of the street where the wonderful ancient centre of Dinan and the many restaurants, shops, banks and transport are accessible within a couple of minutes walk. The house itself is ancient and full of charm and character, however it has been renovated to a high standard throughout and is well appointed and comfortable.
Although it is possible to drive around the town and outskirts we found that the excellent parking arrangements arranged by the owners allowed us to leave the car and take local buses to many of the other interesting towns in the area including Rennes, Dinard, St Malo etc
We enjoyed our holiday immensely and will be going back again.

Fabulous holiday, loved this place so much. Chose it as it is only 1/2 hour drive from St Malo, beautiful old town on river, but was unprepared for quite how lovely - no. 18 is tucked into a row of impossibly beautiful medieval houses and shops, sleepy feel, gorgeous stroll down to the river, or up to the nearby Boulangeries for baguettes.
Easy as anything on arrival to pull up outside house to take in bags, then good very nearby secure long term parking, though we rarely drove anywhere!
Spent most of week walking on the many well marked rambling routes, cycling along river Rance (easy bike hire, 5 minutes away by the bridge) exploring town and swimming at local pool , which is heated and 20 mins walk along river in Lehon - beautiful little village worth a walk to. You can also hire canoes.
The house is so well equipped it is no euphemism to say this was like home - not the usual villa with things clearly just bought to meet holiday let requirements - this is a homely, everything you need, comfortable and well-loved home (owned by John and Sue for 15 years).
The courtyard garden is genuinely a' hot spot' - picks up the sun much of the day round. The street, though a magnet for tourists is quiet, we were surprised how even in August there were no throngs, just a few gently chattering people wandering about, all incredibly peaceful and can barely be heard from inside the house.
Sean is very available if you need anything and gave us a warm and thorough welcome and advice.
Thankyou, and to John and Sue, we had one of our most fulfilling and happiest family holidays. We hope to return!
Lovely home from home.

The garden was a lovely area.
Very enjoyable stay in a lovely home.
From the Owner
“Dinan, need I say more. Our house is on the top end of the famous Rue Jerzual which comes up from the old port right into the centre of Dinan, it is ideally positioned for going everywhere. There are many web sites to see where to go and what to see in this medieval town, I can't praise it enough! So, we are close to all of what is going on in Dinan and we have our own secluded garden for relaxing, having a glass of wine and a sausage or two on the BBQ. Who could ask for more? It was Sean our friend who persuaded us to let out our french home, he is experienced with running his own gite and looks after some others. So it was an easy choice for us to have him run ours for us. All our guests have left kind words about our home, Sean and his girls. Come and stay here you'll love it.”
Activity and Interests
Special interest holidays:
You can go a watch Sean at work,he's a cabinet maker by trade and makes kitchens etc. You'll need to ask him about lessons in paint effects, finishing and woodwork! Fete de Remparts de Dinan July 2014. In addition to the excellent accommodations ("plenty of room for a family of six - we left the top floor to the kids!")," there is a lovely garden where we had breakfast in the morning and relaxed with a glass of wine in the evening." "Sean made us feel welcome and provided assistance beyond the call of duty. A real gem". "My family and I were quite sorry when our stay in Dinan came to an end. Would stay there again anytime!"
The north coast is a 20 minute easy drive from Dinan. Where there are plenty of destinations to choose from, whether you enjoy sandy beaches or small intimate coves. From the historical walled city of St Malo town to the seaside resorts of Dinard and St Cast, to the stunning bay of St Briac and picturesque fishing peninsula of St Jacut and the dramatic lanscapes of Cap Frehel. Also, the Rance Valley is a wonderful area of wildlife preservation, with pathways and picturesque fishing villages.
The nearest airport is at Dinard about 20 mins by car. Ryanair offer very cheap regular flights to and from the UK.
Our nearest port is St Malo (just half an hour from here)which is serviced by Brittany Ferries and Condor.
Other ferry ports are an easy drive on good roads, including Caen, Roscoff and Cherbourg (all about 2 - 3 hours drive).
The drive from the channel tunnel is about 5 1/2 hours.
The house is located in the heart of historic Dinan, one of the best preserved medieval towns in France. Further afield is the 'must see' Mont St Michel and the historic towns of Fougeres, Vitre and the regional capital of Rennes. The Normandy D Day beaches and historic Bayeau can be reached in about 2 hours. The high speed train (TGV) links Dinan to Paris in 4 hours.
DINAN, a medieval town surrounded by 2800 metres of ramparts and 12 towers, with its very own Chateau de Dinan, quaint streets and buildings. The famous Rue Jerzual is a very steep narrow lane leading down to the old port of Dinan but the way back is not for the fainthearted!! (pushchairs not recommended!) There are many good bars and restaurants, one of our favourites being 'La Mere Pourcel'. The Clock tower is also worth a visit, climb the 158 steps for a wonderful view of Dinan and on a clear day you may even be able to see Mont St Michel. A visit to the local tourist office for info. is highly recommended. Market days are worth going to as well.(Thursday mornings). St Malo, not just a port but a beautiful town in its own right, the walled city was heavily bombed during the second world war,but has been wonderfully restored to the original 18th century beauty and is full of sights, good restaurants and shops. There is also a very good aquarium to visit. Dinard market on Saturday is very large and is a 'must visit place' as is the stunning Mont St Michel, built out in the bay, this town is topped by an amazing abbey ,the spires of which can be seen inland for miles (Warning..you have to pay an entrance fee when you get to the top of the steps!). The tidal ranges are world famous and it is said the incoming tide can beat a galloping horse! It's about an hours drive from the gite. Rennes is a student town with an old centre full of character, there are plenty or restaurants pubs and shops etc,all easily accessible with the new metro. Many sights to see.
