Overview

About the property

Barn House,Highgate - Situated in Beautiful Countryside, Wonderful Views

Highgate lies close to the River Severn. The area is rich in stunning landscape and is in one of the most beautiful parts of Wales. Highgate is an ideal base for visiting Offa's Dyke, Powis Castle, for walking, bird watching and touring the lakes and mountains. But do not be deceived by the tranquility, there is plenty going on here including shooting, pony trekking, fishing, walking, narrow gauge railways, riding, canoeing, sailing and mountain biking. Newtown, 3 miles, is most attractive, with its street market on Tuesdays. Here there is a swimming pool, sports centre, theatre, fishing and golf. Among the other small market towns nearby are Welshpool, Montgomery and Llanidloes with their castles, gardens, galleries and shops. Just over the hill lies the Bull and Heifer village pub serving great beer and food. WiFi available in the Barn House.

About Julie Turner

The owners, Chris and Sarah Smith, are both nearing retirement age, and came to Highgate for a change in lifestyle. Previously Chris had been farming all his working life and Sarah, alongside bringing up a family, had worked in farm offices, keeping the books. This all took place in Berkshire - it was a big move to the Welsh borders, a delightful one, stunning countryside, kind and considerate locals, what more could they ask for!

Highgate Barn House and holiday cottages are now run by Chris and Sarah's neighbours, Julie and Steve Turner. They live on a farm overlooking the Barn House where Steve farms sheep and beef - many of which can be seen in the fields surrounding the property. In addition to managing Highgate Accommodation, Julie also works part-time as a Constituency Caseworker for the local Member of Parliament, so life is never dull!

What makes this house unique

A stay in the Barn House at Highgate allows you to take a break from the crowds and the fast pace of life in a land steeped in history and culture; in a place where time stands still. In the Barn House you'll be able to recharge your batteries and relax in the rolling hills of central Wales. Revel in the clear country air and honest to goodness local fare. Highgate is an ideal base for walking, cycling, bird watching and touring lakes and mountains as well as visiting Offa's Dyke and Powis Castle. Further afield but within just over an hour's drive are Snowdonia National Park, the Brecon Beacons and the Cambrian Coast. Julie is always happy to advise of local attractions, activities and amenities - such as Pony Trekking, Off Road Carting, Theatre, Golf, Sports facilities, Cinema, Shopping etc. Online grocery shops deliver to the properties.

Amazing property and a wonderful experience.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Barn House for 3 days. What an amazing building and an even amazing location, facilities and a very very friendly owner (Julie). Not even a single complaint. I would strongly recommend for a family get together or a company event. You will not regret your choice. I would definitely visit again should the opportunity arise. Great experience.

Fantastic Property

  • 5 of 5

We had the wow factor as we walked through the door. Coupled with the luxurious comfort and attention to detail. It has 5 bathrooms/toilets. 10 super king size beds make this property so comfy for our group of 20 adults and 5 kids. Scenic outdoor from windows. Also owner of the barn house is very friendly. Overall we had a memorable holiday.

Highgate is close to the magnificent hills and moorland of the Cambrian Hills, the scenery is breath taking and a total joy to experience. Ordnance survey maps available.

Coast/Beach:

Borth and Aberdovey are about an hour's drive away, they have beautiful sandy beaches and are lovely places to visit.

Cardigan Bay:- Barmouth is where the mountains meet the sea and it's one of the most picturesque resorts on Cardigan Bay. It has a huge, fine golden beach and a small but busy harbour.

Fairbourne is a popular small seaside town with a beautiful bay, which is very flat and safe for all ages. There is also a narrow gauge railway built in the 1890's.

The coast is approx. 45 miles west.

Travel:

Liverpool Airport 90 miles

Manchester Airport 100 miles

Birmingham Airport 70 miles

Welshpool Airfield 12 miles

Mid Wales is extremely rural and the use of a car is highly recommended.

Distances:

Nearest village is Bettws Cedewain 1 mile

Tregynon is 2 miles

Newtown is 3 miles

Welshpool 12 miles

Shrewsbury 28 miles

Powis Castle 10 miles

Gregynog 2 miles

Rhayader 20 miles

Further Details:

Newtown is a small but thriving market town, branches of all the main banks can be found in the town along with a wide selection of restaurants and supermarkets. Newtown is the home of Laura Ashley and it has a shop and sales outlet on Dyffryn Industrial Estate. All the local villages have pubs which serve food and are very good value. Newtown has a lively theatre and several interesting museums, including W.H. Smith book museum and a Textile & Weaving museum. We are very fortunate in having many attractions close by and driving to them is almost as nice as arriving as the scenery is so spectacular and the roads usually peaceful.
