The Rocks is quite simply the most gorgeous house we have ever rented - a magnificent old Scottish home with wow modern interiors, super spacious and comfy. The sunrise from the master bedroom is spiritual - words cannot describe!

We just had the perfect holiday - perfect home in a perfect location. Elie has been lost in time - such a gorgeous traditional family holiday destination. We played golf, tennis, went sailing, built sandcastles, flew kites, creeled for lobster and chilled at The Ship Inn. When the Scottish summer disappointed we tucked up inside by the fire and played boardgames, read and caught up on DVDs with carry out fish and chips!

I can't imagine a better base for our pilgrimage to golf's holy grail! St Andrews was less than 15 minutes drive - we won the lottery for the old course; Kingsbarns was our favourite and we adored the charm of the local courses in Elie and Crail. A day on the course polished off with dinners in local restaurants was our heaven.

We have just returned from our stay at the Rocks, and it was beautiful, there were 10 of us and we had plenty of room to escape each other if needed. The bedrooms were great and the master bedroom was huge! The only negative comment about the house would be that there was only 1 beach towel for all 10 of us!! As the website states beach towels are provided we didn't take any so this proved a bit of a problem, equally we could have done with more bath towels, other than this the house is very well equiped. As always Elie beach and surrounding areas are stunning and we even managed to see a pod of dolphins swim accross the bay on our last day. The chocolate shop in Pittenweem is a must for any chocoholics! One last comment although the website states the deposit can be made by credit card this isn't actually the case and the owner requires the deposit in their account.

5 Star Stay at The Rocks

  • 5 of 5

We arranged this holiday at The Rocks as a surprise 80th Birthday present for my Mum and it proved to be an excellent choice. The accommodation is like a 5 star hotel except you have the peace and tranquility of being with your own group. The setting just off the beach is fantastic and the rooms make the most of the stunning views and location. The Fife Coastal Path runs by the bottom of the garden and provided excellent runs and walks for everyone. The house is equipped with everything you need for a large group and has enough room that you can find your own space as needed.

The only slight negatives we found were space to put our bikes inside (as the garage is closed off) and that some of the channels on the TV didn't work properly (very minor as we didn't watch much TV!).

We would thoroughly recommend this property for a large family or group of friends looking for luxury accommodation, but wanting the freedom of self-catering.

From the Owner

Lifelong dream to own a beachfront home in Elie - the location of perfect childhood holidays. Elie is where time has stood still. Generations of family have been holidaying there for decades; and nothing has changed since Grandad first came on his holidays. Elie offers the ideal traditional family holiday, and is also the perfect base to host friends from all over the world and show them the best of what Scotland has to offer - scenery, history, golf, beaches, food, of course most importantly the people and (sometimes the weather)!

Activity and Interests

The Rocks is on the beach, with direct access, via private gardens, to the blue flag award-wining Elie beach. Direct access to the Fife Coastal Path (runs from the Forth Road bridge to the Tay Bridge). The East Neuk of Fife has many beautiful beaches all linked by the Fife Coastal Path - Shell Bay and Ruby Bay adjoin the main Elie beach. There are numerous watersports available at Elie harbour (windsurfing, sailing, pedalos, donuts and bananas!)

Edinburgh is the nearest airport and approx 45 miles from The Rocks. Nearest train stations are Leuchars (approx 15 miles) and Kirkcaldy (approx 15 miles). Glasgow is approx 70 miles.

Car hire is recommended to enjoy the surrounding area. Off street parking available at the house.

The Rock is situated in the picturesque seaside village of Elie and Earlsferry. St Andrews 11 miles. Home of golf, historic University town. Drive along the coast through the East Neuk of Fife's pretty fishing villages of St Monans (2 miles), Pittenweem (4 miles), Anstruther (6 miles) and Crail (9 miles).

Visit seafood restaurants, art galleries, potteries, castles, museums. Art and Music Festivals through the summer months.

Further Details:

Elie High street offers traditional shopping with a baker, newsagent, greengrocer, chemist and delicatessen as well as a couple of gift and coffee shops. The Ardross Farm Shop just 2 miles outside Elie has fabulous local produce and provides The Rocks welcome hamper. We encourage you to support the local shops and businesses. Supermarkets and highstreet stores can be found in nearby St Andrews. Elie Sports Centre offers a 9 hole golf course ("the wee course") for juniors/beginners, tennis, putting, bowling, plus many watersports at Elie harbour. Great biking and hiking along the Fife Coastal Path. Recommend local art galleries in Pittenweem and Crail. Favourite local restaurants - The Seafood Restaurant, Peat Inn, The Cellar. Favourite pubs - The 19th hole, The Ship Inn. Museums in Anstruther and St Andrews. The Secret Bunker near Crail. National Trust properties and gardens.
