A beautiful little house in a beautiful part of the country. Had a fabulous time with wonderful weather. Two lovely meals at Bensons and would certainly recommend it. Thank you for a very relaxing week. Sally, Ben, Bump and Scragg the dog, April 2011

We've had a fantastic time this week and feel so relaxed and refreshed after staying in beautiful Appledore and gorgeous Amber Cottage. The house has been perfect for us and the children, who made full use of the toys, books and games!

We loved the fabrics and wallpaper and the house was very clean and welcoming. Thanks from the Hollyer family, August 2011

We have really enjoyed our stay in Appledore. Amber Cottage exceeded our expectations and was a real treat. Nick & Gabi & Charlotte the Dachshund, June 2012

Faded Grandeur

  • 2 of 5

The description makes this sound like a very high quality property, unfortunately this is not the case. The 'Egyptian cotton sheets' turn out to be straightforward polyester/ cotton from Dunelm covering a duvet which has seen better days. The garden might have been 'beautifully planted' once upon a time but is now overgrown. In fact we come to the conclusion that the photos were taken a number of years ago and don't really represent the vcurrent state of the property with its peeling paint, damp patches and musty smell (suggest avoiding if you have any kind of breathing difficulty). The downstairs does not get any sunshine except for a very short period, which does not help. It could do with a proper clean e.g. under the sofas, and overall refurbishment (toilet seat whose buffers leave sticky marks on the pan is not really acceptable at this price level).

I agree that the location in Appledore is excellent, and that it's a great place to visit. If you need a place that will take a dog then it might be that you would accept these limitations but in our opinion it was not worth the money which should have got a genuinely high quality property.

Owner's Response: Hi, we are really saddened to hear that you feel like this about our property. Amber Cottage has been very popular with our guests who have returned on many occasions. We are now aware of some of the problems you have mentioned but feel that others are not a fair view of our property. Amber Cottage is an old building and may have a few areas that need attention (which we will be addressing at the end of the season). Things like bedding do get updated and we do use some Egyptian cotton sheets but yes some of the duvets are from Dunelm and are of a good quality. Our housekeeper always makes sure the property is clean and I am sorry that you felt it wasn't.

Wonderfully quaint

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time at Amber Cottage. Location is perfect a 1 minute stroke to the harbour front and local shops. Street car parking was easy and close. We got a tourist permit for the week and parked in loads of places. The cottage it's self is very homely and has all amenities you may need. The two boys loved their room. Our master bed room was huge and the bath was great. Thank you for the wine and biscuits a very nice touch. We will definitely be back to your cottage.

Appledore Aug 2015 holiday review

  • 4 of 5

Amber cottage is a beautiful Georgian cottage in the heart of Appledore. We arrived and found the cottage easily off a side street near an antiques shop. It's very well equipped, and proportioned and lovely and plus a lovely private back garden that wasn't overlooked. It had a lovely deep bath in the bathroom to give it a luxurious feel. The main bedroom is huge with quality furnishings and bedding and it's own TV too. The front room was very well equipped with a big LCD TV and a DVD player plus some board games and books too for wet weather. It also had a working cast iron fireplace (complete with supplied logs and kinder.) The location simply couldn't be any more central in Appledore, everything was within a 10 min walk. As a bonus this cottage accepts well behaved dogs and we did take ours as there is so much open space around the surrounding areas to walk a dog in. There is plenty of space in this cottage for a family and it has everything you need including crab buckets and nets too for any fishing from the local harbor. Appledore is a little gem of a place and feels like a million miles away from the bustle of a big city. All the local pubs do local brews and the food is top notch plus entertainment on most nights too. There is even a small ferry boat crossing to the other side of the estuary called Instow which also has great pubs and food and a dog friendly beach all year. This is a perfect get away destination cottage in a tranquil location off the beaten track that will bring a smile to everyone that longs for a bit of luxury in great surroundings. I can't recommend this cottage and Appledore highly enough if you need to de-stress or want a walking holiday with your dog. Even without a dog I wouldn't hesitate to re-book this cottage as it has so much going for it and the destination of Appledore too. We will be back for sure the kids didn't want to leave and neither did we..

pet friendly cottage in great location

  • 4 of 5

We are walking the sw coast path with our dogs so our first priority is to find pet friendly accommodation reasonably close to the path.

This cottage was an excellent choice. It is located on one of the many footpaths which run thro' Appledore just off the main harbour road which runs round the estuary. It is very close to the local store and the other excellent facilities of charming Appledore. The bus stop is just on the main harbour road. There is a bus service which runs round to Westward Ho, Barnstaple and even Illfracombe.

There are no views out of the cottage but the view from the Harbour Road is glorious.

We stayed there in October and we were very snug and we did not need to light the fire. The cottage was once the owners home and it feels very comfortable.

The garden catches the sunshine however there are steps up to the garden with only a rope handrail. The paving needed weeding but it was the end of the season so we were n't using the garden much.

There is roadside parking which in October we had no difficulty finding a free parking space. In summer it might be necessary to budget to use the car park which is just round the corner.

The downside;-

Our old bones did find that after a days walking that the roll top bath was quite difficult to get into.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review Angela we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Amber Cottage and the delights of Appledore. The cottage is always popular with guests especially those with dogs who can make use of the lovely walks along the estuary. The cottage hasn't been our home but we have made it homely with many of our own things so maybe thats why it feels like we once lived there. The garden is now being cared for by our excellent housekeeper and is indeed a lovely place to sit in the sun. We hope you might return again for another walking holiday and apologies that you found the bath a bit tricky.

Location

From the Owner

When we first drove down into Appledore we just loved the views across the River Torridge to Instow. Walking around Appledore you are taken back in time to a world of sea faring history. The charm of this old fishing port has been retained with its grand Regency buildings along Marine Parade and the old shop fronts along Market Street. Over the years many artists and Crafts people have settled here making it all the more interesting. Appledore Summer Festival in July/August and The Book Festival in late September are great events in the calendar. The coast along here is wonderful too. We love going to Saunton Sands beach and the Hartland Pennisular is stunning. Our guests have visited beaches in Cornwall, not far away. Exmoor is another favourite for horse riding and the Tarka Trail for cycling.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The cottage is located just a few minutes stroll from the quayside where you will find the estuary of the rivers Taw and Torridge - great for beach combing, crabbing and staring into rock pools! Westward Ho! which is 10 minutes away by car - has an excellent beach with lifeguards and good surfing. Putsborough, Saunton and Croyde are good beaches thirty or forty minutes away in the car, all with surfing. Instow also has a good sandy bucket-and-spade beach.

Travel:

Exeter is the nearest airport. Train: From Exeter St David’s Station take the Tarka Line to Barnstaple, then bus to Bideford and Appledore. Coach: National Express run services to Bideford from where you can get a local bus to Appledore.

Distances:

Just 10 mins drive to Bideford (with large supermarket and pannier market), 15 minutes to Barnstaple (large shops). Lots of tourist attractions nearby, including The Big Sheep 5 mins drive. Milky Way 10 mins drive. Clovelly 15 mins drive. Hartland Quay 25 mins drive.

Further Details:

John's delicatessen of Appledore is a few minutes stroll away. It has a full service Post Office inside and a good selection of groceries and fresh vegetables and fruit. Galleries in Appledore sell great products by local artists and are well worth a look around. Atlantic Village retail outlet is 10 minutes drive away with new large comprehensively stocked ASDA.

Facilities

From the Owner

When we first stepped into Amber Cottage we could see how amazing it could be. Its character had been retained with large sash windows, beamed ceilings and wood burner for those cosy winter evenings. With its grand proportions you will love spending time here, we do! The master bedroom is decorated with beautiful silk curtains and a Louis 16th super king bed. We have added our love of interesting interiors to give it that feel of something a bit different. Wonderful textiles, quirky furniture and vintage finds. Breakfast in the garden on a summers day is just perfect and when you walk along Marine Parade and see the view across to Instow we know you’ll want to stay! We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
