Oast Houses and Annexe

Overview

Property

Updated: 29-Oct-2016
Oast and Annexe in Battle, East Sussex, England - Countryside Location Excellent views. 7 Minutes to Battle Town

Rising like fairy-tale turrets throughout Kent and Sussex, the British oast is a well-loved feature of the countryside that happens to make a great home too. We can sleep from 2 to 10 people. We can accommodate up to 8 adults and 2 older children. (plus 2 younger children on sofabed). There is a large living area, modern stone bathroom and full kitchen facilities. The floors are oak boarded or stone and both the bedroom and living rooms of the annexe have large glass double doors which open onto the garden. The historic market town of Battle is a 7 minute drive away. The property is in a quiet location with beautiful views over the countryside and includes a lawn area, ideal for barbecues.

We have many family parties and celebrations at the holiday let, but property is not suitable for loud parties with loud music. If you think your party will be loud, this is not the property for you.

We have neighbours close by to consider and so would not like noise levels to become excessive.

About the Owner

We live just outside Battle, England, in the beautiful Ashbourne Oast which we purchased in December 2008. We both own and run What’s On Magazine - an independent company established for 16 years. We enjoy living here because of its proximity to the beautiful historic town of Battle, it gives us the peace of the countryside with easy access to the coast and larger towns of Eastbourne and Tunbridge Wells for shopping. London can be reached easily by the local mainline stations.

Really enjoyed the tranquil setting and lovely views and sense of retreat from the hubbub of city life. The house was really comfortable and tastefully furnished and the garden was ideal for the kids to run around. For me the best part was the location: so well placed to visit countless castles, gardens and family attractions around Kent and East Sussex which made it ideal for our week-long stay.

Regards, Jason and Alex Fletcher (plus Nina and Casper)

We really enjoyed our stay the other week the oast was very nice and we had a very relaxing week, looking forward to staying again in the summer

I just wanted to say how much we enjoyed our stay last weekend.

We couldn't have wished for a better setting and a fabulous house to stay in and there was so much for the grandchildren to do. They couldn't believe how much space they had to run around in and enjoy the countryside on their doorstep.

Beautiful house in a superb location

  • 5 of 5

We used the house as the location to celebrate our Ruby wedding with our two daughters their husbands and our four grandchildren. The four bedrooms in the main house are located such that the children slept in rooms close to their parents. We had our own bedroom in the annex linked internally to the main house.

The dining room was perfect for our anniversary dinner and the lounge for relaxing after dinner drinks.

The children loved the freedom that Michael and Anna gave them to explore the grounds.

Dad's 80th birthday weekend

  • 5 of 5

Our family party of 8 stayed at this fabulous oast house to celebrate my Dad being "80 years young " We had a lovely weekend. The house was beautiful and in a wonderful location, especially as Dad was born in Battle and Mum in Hastings. It was just right for us as Mum and Dad had the annexe which was excellent as it was all on one level and the rest of us had the lovely rooms upstairs. The house was truly luxurious in a very peaceful location with plenty to do and see nearby. A real trip down memory lane for us all. Thank you to the owners for letting us share their very special place.

Amazing location for a weekend break

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for three nights in May this year as a group of 7 and had the most wonderful, relaxing time. The location is really perfect for getting away, there is no sound pollution and the scenery is stunning. We were more than happy with the beautiful interior and gardens and loved that there were 2 living rooms, the boys watched sport in one while the girls watched films in the other! All of the bedrooms are gorgeous and were so comfortable. Michael was incredibly helpful and made the stay very easy. We will definitely be booking again. Thank you.

Facilities

From the Owner

The British oast is a well-loved feature of the countryside that happens to make a great home too. So what is an oast? For visitors from overseas, the distinctive circular towers with conical roofs can be quite a surprising sight. Oasts were the farm buildings where hops were traditionally dried out and packed for our brewing industry from the 16th century onwards. The word actually refers to the attached barn, where the hop press was situated, while the tower where the hops were dried should properly be called the kiln or roundel. The roundel acted like a chimney. A charcoal-fired kiln was built at the bottom, and above were two or three thin floors where the hops were spread, through which the heat could pass, before disappearing through the white-painted cowl on the top.
