About Amanda Dickinson

We first came to France when my parents bought a property in Brittany, and soon fell in love with the easy lifestyle, endless summer sun, stunning countryside and of course the food. Now myself and my family have moved here permanently (five years ago) to enjoy the best of what this beautiful region has to offer.

Amanda Dickinson purchased this house in 2005

Why Amanda Dickinson chose Migron

After searching long and hard in the Charente, we finally settled on this area for many reasons: The beauty of the countryside with endless vineyards and fields of golden sunflowers. Knowing that we were only 50 mins from some of the best beaches in Europe. The strong attraction of historic towns such as Saintes and Cognac and the stunning port of La Rochelle. The variety of attractions for children such as zoos, aquariums, water parks and hopping over to the islands of Isle de Re and Isle D'Oleron. Being amongst such amazing gastronomy, markets and wonderful seafood!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We booked Maison Poirier for our stay due to its size and its proximity to our recently purchased property. The property was well equipped and suited our needs perfectly. The property was roomy, kitchen and bathrooms were well equipped. The summerhouse and games room proved useful for our teenagers. The pool was great. We loved the outside dining space. It was private and well designed.

Perfect for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect accommodation for our family holiday. It is in a wonderful calm location but not too far away from towns (we visited Cognac and Saintes) and the coast (we loved the beaches at St Palais and Vaux sur Mer). The facilities on site were great, the children loved the playhouse and the pool, especially as the weather was really hot at the time. Everything was well maintained, inside/outside of the property and the gardens are lovely. The owners who live on the same grounds were extremely helpful and accommodating. They made us all feel at home and gave us lots of tips for places to go with the children. We are already looking at booking again for next year as there were lots of places we didn't get chance to visit, even though we had an action-packed couple of weeks!! Thank you for your hospitality.

Lovely property with great facilities

  • 5 of 5

The property is much larger than we imagined from looking at the photos. Everything needed for a stress free holiday was provided and a really nice welcome hamper was there on our arrival.

The split of rooms and bathrooms upstairs and downstairs is great for 2 couples to allow a bit of space if required! Dining area and lounge are nice spaces and the kitchen well laid out.

There is a private drive and gate for the gite and private courtyard to eat or relax in.

Shared pool and games room were great and we made good use of these.

Amanda was very helpful with answering questions before arrival and she and her husband were on hand during our stay for help and suggestions when needed. Nice to know they were around but were in no way intrusive.

All in all recommend!

Home from Home

  • 5 of 5

Excellent accommodation for the 7 of us meeting all our needs. The house itself was well equipped and very well kept, Amanda and Ian were on hand to help if needed but never intrusive any problems we had were immediately sorted; our teenage girls unwittingly removed the modem for the internet on arrival. The pool was well used by all of us and the summer house. We have been here before and were so impressed with the facilities when looking for a place that could accommodate 2 large families we thought of Maison Poirier. We used both houses across the two families and had enough space for us all to have a excellent holiday no mean feat with 8 children in tow ranging from 4 - 13 years old! We would recommend Maison Poirier to any of our friends and have.

Beautiful family villa

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this wonderful villa at the end of July, straight away we were thrilled with the house, it was huge so spacious and 3 bathrooms was very handy, the house was so clean and very well styled, it was very cosy even though it's big, we felt very at home, Ian and amanda were brilliant they put together a welcome hamper and were always at hand if we had any queries which we didn't as the villa had everything, the pool and summer house were just fab, we had a birthday meal in the summer house one evening the kids loved it. Ian and Amanda have designed the space so well for families, there are bikes, table tennis, pool, and a kids little house with a little kitchen which our 3 year old loved!

We enjoyed our selves so much that we have booked again for next year!

Great set up with fantastic outdoor space, but a bit basic

  • 3 of 5

We booked Maison Poirier and Maison Cerisier for 2 weeks at the end of June. The set up is great - the garden is beautiful, the summer house is great for eating outside, and the pool is fab too. We had 3 young children with us and they so enjoyed exploring the wendy house and the many inside and outside toys and books. Ian and Amanda are both very pleasant and helpful.

One thing to be aware of is that the houses are quite basically kitted out - no hairdryers, some bedrooms without fans (which in the heat we had was a struggle), no cushions for sun loungers or outdoor chairs etc. Guests are asked to replace everything they use (eg dishwasher tabs, washing powder, washing up liquid), all of which adds up. Especially if you fly over and so can't take the excess home! Guests are also asked to clean the properties for the next guests, which involves either spending your last day cleaning or paying a steep fee for cleaners. So quite a few hidden costs. We also hadn't appreciated that the pool is shared with the family and their friends. This wasn't a big problem, but did influence our use of it (and the owner's children should perhaps be careful about assuming that they are the only people who speak French...).

The surrounding area is incredibly quiet. If the weather is good this doesn't matter as the setting the houses are in is so lovely. Unfortunately we had a week of rain and really struggled to find things to do, particularly with toddlers in tow.

Overall we had a great holiday, with no major gripes, but worth being aware of the limitations of the area and additional costs associated with a stay here.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your constructive feedback, and also for taking the time to post a review. It was a pleasure to welcome your family to our cottages. We do strive to improve our services, so thank you for making the above comments. There is a hair dryer in each property, but we clearly need to display them in a more prominent position. Each of the upstairs bedrooms has a fan, and if extra fans had been requested they would have been provided as soon as was feasible. There is a 'Welcome' brochure in each property with a note on the front which reads, "We hope that you won't have any cause for complaint, if however there is a problem, please inform us as soon as possible and we will do our best to rectify the situation as far as possible", so we do encourage early communication to address and any issues. We do out of courtesy provide many products for guests to use such as dishwasher tabs, washing liquids etc., otherwise guests who arrive by plane would then have to buy full boxes of all these products. We then ask guests to simply replace any products they have used up completely e.g. they may have to replace only the washing up liquid, which works out cheaper for the guests than initially buying everything and not being able to return home with them. We also provide a complimentary welcome basket on arrival, which I hope was enjoyed by the reviewer's family. When guests book the property, they are asked to read and accept the booking conditions before they can proceed with the booking, this states that the guest has the choice to leave the property as they find it, or we can provide a cleaning service for 10 euros per hour (just above the legal minimum wage in France). We also ask the guest to return to us an original signed copy of the booking conditions at the time of booking to verify that they have read and accepted these conditions, which the reviewer kindly did, so I don't feel that this could be classed as a hidden cost. There are 2 properties, so the pool is shared as mentioned in the advert. We are pleased to hear that "the set up is great - the garden is beautiful, the summer house is great for eating outside, and the pool is fab too", and "that overall we had a great holiday". Many thanks.
