The Charente-Maritime with it's exhilarating micro-climate, offers much interest.

The Atlantic coast is only an hour away with it's amazing beaches at Royan, Ile d'Oleron, Fouras, Chatalaillon Plage and Ile de Ré. Alternatively, you can take advantage of the local countryside, walks in the vineyards and woods surrounding the hamlet, or cycle the myriad of peaceful lanes.

The park at Cognac is a must for the kids. Try canoeing or fishing on the Charente river, or visit the superb Aquarium at La Rochelle and Zoo at La Palmyre. For the golfing enthusiast there are courses at Cognac, Saintes and La Rochelle.

You can explore the Marais Poitevin (Green Venice), visit historic towns such as Angouleme (45 mins), Poitiers (75 mins), Saintes (20 mins), La Rochelle (75 mins), the Cognac distilleries (15 mins) or even Futuroscope (90 mins). There are numerous good (and reasonably priced) restaurants in the area and the superb local markets offer an amazing range of fresh seafood, farm produce and cheeses.

The cottage is an ideal base for classic car rally enthusiasts as we have undercover off road parking parking for 5 cars, and can accomodate 5 couples when using our second gite.

About Amanda Dickinson

We first came to France when my parents bought a property in Brittany, and soon fell in love with the easy lifestyle, endless summer sun, stunning countryside and of course the food. Now myself and my family have moved here permanently (five years ago) to enjoy the best of what this beautiful region has to offer.

Amanda Dickinson purchased this house in 2005

Why Amanda Dickinson chose Saintes area

After searching long and hard in the Charente, we finally settled on this area for many reasons: The beauty of the countryside with endless vineyards and fields of golden sunflowers. Knowing that we were only 50 mins from some of the best beaches in Europe. The strong attraction of historic towns such as Saintes and Cognac and the stunning port of La Rochelle. The variety of attractions for children such as zoos, aquariums, water parks and hopping over to the islands of Isle de Re and Isle D'Oleron. Being amongst such amazing gastronomy, markets and wonderful seafood!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We booked Maison Poirier for our stay due to its size and its proximity to our recently purchased property. The property was well equipped and suited our needs perfectly. The property was roomy, kitchen and bathrooms were well equipped. The summerhouse and games room proved useful for our teenagers. The pool was great. We loved the outside dining space. It was private and well designed.

Great family friendly property

  • 5 of 5

We spent 10 days (30th May - 8th June) at the property and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our 2 yr old daughter loved the sand pit, wendy house and swimming pool. We also made use of the games room playing pool, table tennis and darts. The owners were very hospitable but not intrusive. The property was clean and very well equipped - especially witht the provision of a cot, high chair and toys for our children. Would thoroughly recommend it!

Perfect for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect accommodation for our family holiday. It is in a wonderful calm location but not too far away from towns (we visited Cognac and Saintes) and the coast (we loved the beaches at St Palais and Vaux sur Mer). The facilities on site were great, the children loved the playhouse and the pool, especially as the weather was really hot at the time. Everything was well maintained, inside/outside of the property and the gardens are lovely. The owners who live on the same grounds were extremely helpful and accommodating. They made us all feel at home and gave us lots of tips for places to go with the children. We are already looking at booking again for next year as there were lots of places we didn't get chance to visit, even though we had an action-packed couple of weeks!! Thank you for your hospitality.

Lovely Maison Poirier in Migron, amongst vineyards

  • 5 of 5
Verified Stay

We (myself, my 2 boys aged 10 & 14 and their Grandparents) have just returned from our stay at Maison Poirier. We all had a lovely week's stay and all wished that it could have been for longer. The gite has been thoughtfully and beautifully laid out, a spotlessly clean, very comfortable home-away-from-home and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there at any time of the year. The thoughtfully supplied 'Welcome Basket' was indeed very welcome after a day's journey and so too the option to enjoy the supply (for a small charge) of very good red and white wine and pineau; time saved in the supermarket! We very much enjoyed our pretty, secluded private courtyard garden, along with the tasty grapes from the vine! Full use was made of the lovely swimming pool and fantastic games room (table tennis, games of pool, table football and darts). The lovely summer house, with comfortable sofas, overlooking the large garden and swimming pool was a great spot for 'chilling out'; in fact there was more than enough outside space for the occupants of the two available gites to enjoy, without treading on each others toes. Our very kind hosts, Amanda and Ian, seemed to have thought of everything that could allow guests to enjoy themselves to the maximum. They were on hand if needed, yet respectful of their guests' privacy. In fact we were very grateful for their help in arranging an emergency doctor's appointment along with excellent road directions and directions to the pharmacy. Maison Poirier is in a very rural location, yet well-located for visits to Cognac, Saintes, Angouleme and the coast. There was much we didn't manage to do, but a return trip should do it!

Great place to relax. Wonderfully clean and beautifully maintained accommodation, with your every need thought of by the welcoming owners. This is our third time and we will going again! Beautiful region of France with warm climate and plenty to do for both children and adults locally and onsite.

a superb holiday cottage, actually much more.

  • 5 of 5

From the minute that we arrived Amanda and Ian could not do enough for us, they showed us round the cottage, gardens and the pool, which were immaculately clean and well presented, could not have wished for anything better. The summer house is just great for dinning alfresco or just chilling out in the comfy chairs. The area is great for exploring the countryside and the city of Cognac is just 15 minutes away with great restaurants and of course the brandy. A trip to the coast is only an hour away with a great choice of destinations. Overall a superb place for a holiday.

A holiday home of quality, charm & comfort. A gem.

  • 5 of 5

What a joy it is to be able to write about the most relaxing holiday we have had in years. Our stay at Maison Poirier was so unusual, due to not having to worry about a thing.

This holiday cottage was immaculately clean, comfortable, and full of charm and character offering all the amenities any family could need.

The pool and gardens are equally pristine and play areas for children plus a games room keeps all the young ones amused for hours. Our grandchildren were never bored, as we were not either being able on mass, to go rides on the bicycles provided for all ages.

Nothing was to much trouble for our hosts Ian & Amanda which contributed so much to our fantastic family holiday. We`re booking again next year, can`t
