House in Espalion, Correze, Limousin, France - Peaceful Location Within Easy Reach Of The Dordogne And Parc Natural
Our gite is situated in the Correze, a Department of the Limousin. The gite is situated on the edge of a small hamlet overlooking uninterrupted views of the stunning countryside. The gite is well equipped and can comfortably accommodate two people. If you want the peace and quiet that rural France can give you then this Gite is well placed to give you bird song in abundance as well as amazing night skies. In the day time you can relax in the privacy of the garden and cool down in the pool or sit in the shade of the tree that covers the courtyard at the back of the gite. The Correze has the nick name the Lake District of France and offers stunning scenery and beautiful towns and villages, many showing evidence of their origins in medieval times. The Limousin is the least populated region of France and the French people themselves surprise even the visiting French people with their openness and welcoming attitude to visitors from what ever country.

About the Owner
We hope you will find our gite a place that you would like to visit. We have owned the house for eight years and have now become a part of the community. We have been so touched by our neighbours willingness to embrace us, despite our only managing to get over there for four or five weeks a year. We hope to change this soon. As frequent gite users and people who like to cook, we have equipped our gite with our own needs in mind. We hope you will like it. Whilst it is nice to get a return on the investment we have made on our home in France, our aim is to cover our costs but primarily, to give you a memorable time in France, whether this be you first or one of many.
Guestbook comments from the owner
"This was our first 'off piste' experience of holidaying in France and so we were a bit anxious about what we would find. The gite proved to be much roomier than the photos suggested and was really well stocked with everything we needed, including wine and starter provisions which meant that we could get straight into our holiday. The area has loads to do but we really enjoyed our day horse riding. We had a great time" Laura and Dave.

We have recently returned from two weeks in Espalion. Due to various reasons we arrived late, so Joan and Mike were kind enough to leave us a delicious meal and a bottle of wine. Mike’s photographs on the website do not do the gite justice, It is so much nicer than we expected. It has a welcoming feel and was more than big enough for the two of us. There are some steep steps up to the bedroom and you need to watch out for the odd beam but that just adds to the character. Espalion is in deepest, rural France, surrounded by farms and orchards. We enjoyed waking up to the sound of the neighbours’ cows and the donkey up the road. The little pool was welcome on hot days and the garden was good for relaxing and looking out for shooting stars in the evening. You will definitely need a car to visit some of the interesting towns and villages. The evening farmers’ markets are a must. Just turn up with your plates and cutlery, buy your food and cook it on the communal BBQ. There are a lot of local people there and it’s a good opportunity to practise some French. Mike and Joan are excellent hosts. We had a lovely time.
This was our third trip to this sheer delightful accommodation set in a beautiful part of France. We can honestly say this is a location set in paradise and together with its tranquil surroundings and the nearby facilities either in Pompadour or further a field make this a perfect holiday for those wishing to just sit and listen to the birds and bee's and enjoy the peaceful French culture and way of life or travel further a field.
Mike and Joan are the perfect hosts and nothing was ever too much trouble when we needed advice either be it about the Gite or excursions out. As ever the accommodation was spotlessly clean and possesses all the amenities you could wish for, Mike even arranged the weather-it was glorious from the minute we arrived to the minute we left. We have already booked to go back for our fourth consecutive visit next year.
Many thanks Mike and Joan.

Loved the place!
We have recently returned from a lovely week at this gite. It was exactly what we wanted, set off the beaten track, but close enough to get all the provisions you need in ten minutes. The gite is extremely well fitted with pretty much all you need .It has lots of good quality, nice touches, and is better presented than others we have stayed at in Limousin. The bed was extremely comfortable , and late rises , were a constant feature of our week! The garden was pretty and soaking up the views was a delight, and we always laughed at the funny way the cows got interested in us! The pool looked nice , but we didn`t use it – preferring just to sit on the decking taking in the quiet and the scenery. You are situated well for all the main attractions of the area –obviously Pompadour with its fine chateau and splendid race course are worth a look , while further afield Turenne and Collange la Rouge are a good combined day out. A trip into St Robert, then into the Dordogne is a nice run out too. Troche and its decent restaurant is an easy and pleasant walk in from the gite. Pompadour and Lubersac also have decent eateries. So lots to recommend here. Mike and Joan were friendly and approachable and made us very welcome-they know exactly, the touches that make the difference to a stay. I would not hesitate to recommend this gite to anyone, who appreciates the quiet life, comfortable surroundings and beautiful scenery. Cheers, Mike and Joan, and we hope to return sometime in the future.
Peaceful Rural France
We were looking for a peaceful holiday away from the crowds and we certainly found just that. The gite is small but beautifully presented and well equipped. The courtyard is a lovely private area to wine and dine with plenty of shade for hot days. The garden is well planned with lots of nooks and crannies to spend many relaxing hours just looking at the fantastic views and watching the local wildlife, and the pool may be small but just what you need on a hot afternoon. Mike and Joan, just next door, were the most genial hosts we could have hoped for. Espalion is rural with a capital "R"! Pure darkness at night and peace by day, broken only by the braying of the local donkey! Thank you Mike and Joan for a wonderful holiday.
A Little Gem
This gite was perfect for our needs. We wanted somewhere a little bit off the beaten track, but with good facilities in the gite and a rural setting. That's exactly what we got. The area is not stunning but very lovely indeed and has many apple orchards across the countryside.
The gite is very pretty indeed (we think Mike and Joan are quite modest about this - we loved it). Outside, there is a really sizeable plot which means you have lots of choice about where to sit when you're having an afternoon when it really is too hot to be out and about; there are many shady nooks and crannies and also lots of full sun for tan top ups. And you can always jump in the pool to cool down whenever you want - as the owners say, you couldn't really go swimming in it but it's fab to look out over the valley from there.
Inside, the gite is lovely and cool, which is exactly what you need in the summer (it was in the 90's for quite a lot of the time we were there and still the interior did not get too hot). We found everything to be tasteful and comfortable, with good equipment in the kitchen. The bed was comfortable as well. Please note that, as the owners make clear, the staircase is steep and there are a couple of low beams upstairs. We had no problem with this but it's worth mentioning.
We found everything to be as described and, as a previous reviewer said, possibly nicer than the pictures, which couldn't really do justice to the atmosphere of peace and calm which makes this gite holiday just a little bit special. The birdsong in the morning is lovely and we got quite friendly with the cows in the next field and next door's hen, which occasionally brought her chicks into the garden for a visit.
There is plenty to see and do; we didn't venture too far afield and still found lots of attractions, if you like just wandering around nice towns and villages. We enjoyed Pompadour and the chateau; also Uzerche had nice shops and monuments to wander round. Gimel les Cascades is a pretty village which, although obviously touristy, isn't too busy and still retains its charm. Highlight (if you like a bit of a clamber) is the walk along the waterfall path. It costs 5 Euros but is absolutely worth it. Recommend going to Gimel in the morning before it gets too hot. We went for lunch in the restaurant in Troche, which is a nice walk from the gite (or short drive). The restaurant looks tiny but is spacious and does good food.
Overall definitely recommended. Thank you, Mike and Joan.
From the Owner
“We wanted a place in the country. Rural France is like stepping back in time in many ways. We also wanted to be able to get to it with ease and so its proximity to Southampton airport was important. At the time we bought, the country was being invaded by Brits seeking a different life and we wanted to avoid being in a Brits enclave. The main reason for being in France is, from our point of view, to be with peoples of another culture and we have been blessed by the way in which the people in the commune have embraced us as friends. It is also an area of great scenery sitting on the edge of the beginning of the South of France, usually this line is drawn from Brive, and so we are well placed to travel further down country if we choose.”
Activity and Interests
Special interest holidays:
This is an ideal place for those who love horse riding and horse racing as Arnac Pomdapour is the home of the national stud of France and has its own race course in the centre of the town.
The nearest coast is approximately a two hour drive away. Much nearer are a number of swimming lakes which provide beaches, shade and facilities for picnics and are a favourite with the French people. The nearest is a 15 minute drive away in Vigeos.
Our gite is approximately 50 minutes drive from Limoges airport with flights from the north, central and southern England taking about an hour and a half. Car hire is available at the airport. Driving from Le Havre takes about six hours and you will need a car as the gite is in a rural setting.
Arnac Pompadour is the nearest small town and it has a Chateau built for the Madamme of the same name. It is also the home of the national stud.
The Correze is know as the Lake District of France and is a beautiful region but should you tire of it, the Dordogne with its many attractions is a thirty minute drive away. The lovely cities of Tulle and Brive are a similar distance.
Arnac Pompadour and Lubersac, another pretty village only 9 km away have supermarkets where you can stock up with local produce and wine. Both have banks and cash points. There is a restaurant in Troche, a 3 minute drive away, which provides good fare for lunch an dinner. A little further afield and you will find the pretty town of Uzerche which also has good restaurants.
There is a swimming lake in the village of Vigeos, a much favoured place to swim and relax in shaded glades by the locals. Horse riding is also available. You can get lessons or, if you are competent enough, enjoy a days hacking.

“So many properties offer tranquillity in beautiful settings. There are many to choose from. Ours is not the most stunning or beautiful house and nor is it set in the most stunning and beautiful countryside. There are literally thousands, all of them better than ours. But when you are there, you can relax in the peace and quite and in comfort and you know you are in France. And we are probably a lot cheaper than them so why not give us a go!”

- Notes on accommodation: This is a small though surprisingly spacious gite that is cool in high summer and warm and cosy in cooler times thanks to the wood burner that sits at the centre of the house. The gite is designed to accommodate two people comfortably. Outside: At the rear of the gite is a small courtyard offering a shaded place to relax and read with a glass of the local wine by your side. You can also eat al fresco here. The garden opens out onto the countryside from where you can relax by the pool. The pool is an above ground pool of wood construction and is approximately 4 meters in diameter. We provide a BBQ and loungers together with outdoor furniture for dining. The courtyard provides a secluded area in which to relax and the garden is not overlooked by neighbours, notwithstanding the cows in the neighbouring fields who can be a little inquisitive! For people staying for longer than one week, the linen and towels are changed weekly.
