Converted Former Coach House In Contemporary Style

Bedrooms 1
Property type barn
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Coach House in Ulverston, Lake District, Cumbria - Located In Georgian Market Town Close To Coniston And Windermere Lakes

The coach house is tucked away off a lane next to a former church - the church tower is at the bottom of the driveway. The coach house is a traditionally built slate building that has been restored internally as a luxurious contemporary house, whilst maintaining the old ships' timbers and stone walls. There is a garage and entrance door on the ground floor, with an entrance hall and beechwood stairs leading to the main living area. The coach house is within a couple of hundred yards of local shops and pubs, or turning in the other direction, you can walk through lanes and footpaths to the foot of Hoad Hill, a quarter of a mile away.

About The Owner

I'm originally from the Furness area and return fairly frequently for the purposes of kith and kin, and because my own family love the area.

The Owner purchased this barn in 2000

Why The Owner chose Lakes Peninsula

My wife and I lived in Ulverston for a number of years, moving away for work reasons. I love the quirkiness of Ulverston, its people, its pubs, its down to earth nature embedded in such beauty - between the Furness fells, the lakes and Morecombe Bay. The coach house was a ruin when I acquired it - it dates from the 1750's and has recycled ships' timbers in the roof beams. It originally stabled horses for what was the presbytery to the church. This is now the Oddfellows hall whose tower sits in the drive to the coach house.

What makes this barn unique

Ulverston sets it's store out as the Festival Town, and there are a great number of these - the highlights for me being the Dickensian Festival, the Charter fortnight culminating in the lamp procession, and the walking festival - Ulverston is the start of the Cumbrian Way. The Laurel and Hardy Museum, the Buddhist monastery and the Hoad monument lighthouse add to the character of the town, with its ginnels and cobbles, and excellent pubs. Moss Tarn is tucked away down a lane just outside the central area of town. Its kitted out as a luxurious retreat from the weather. Its only 8.5 miles to Newby Bridge on Windermere, 10 miles to Coniston Water, and a walk down Ulverston Canal to a breathtaking view of Morecombe Bay.

Guestbook comments from the owner

'"Just to let you know that we had a great time in Moss Tarn which is a lovely property, beautifully renovated and has a very homely atmosphere. We would recommend it without hesitation. We also found Ulverston very pleasant and had a very enjoyable time exploring the surrounding area."

"What a superb location and appartment Moss Tarn is, we fell in love with it as soon as we walked in,the galleried bedroom is fabulous and the whole place is stunningly converted. Ulverston itself was a great little town to use as a base for exploring the local area too, away from the busyness of some of the Lake towns, but within easy reach of the lakes and fells"

"We had great holiday and loved your coach house. It was comfortable and tasteful, a real pleasure to come back to after along walk in the beautiful countryside.(Many thanks for all your helpful instructions and informative books on the area which all contributed to our holiday"

Great little bolt hole - a home from home

Great location within easy walking distance of pubs and shops but also a good base for exploring the southern lakes. Everything provided and refurbished to a high standard. Wouldn't suit the elderly or those with small children - the stairs are quite tricky! However we loved the quirkiness!

Wonderful location, well appointed flat

  • 5 of 5

The property is right in the centre of ulverston, but tucked away and quite quiet. While I did see a neighbour park there, the lane and driveway makes it difficult for any but the smallest cars to park there. I used one of the many nearby public car parks at £30 a week instead.

The house is very well lit and equipped. The double bed was comfortable, the pots and pans were very good spec, the kitchen had all the implements and appliances I could need, and there is a dishwasher, and a washer and dryer.

The property has many stairs and would be difficult for someone with reduced mobility.

The property is walking distance from a butcher, fish monger, Booths supermarket as well as s greengrocer and two smaller supermarkets, and all the pubs and shops of ulverston.

Plus, Diane, the housekeeper, went above and beyond to ensure I found the property and resolve and questions or issues I had.

I would definitely stay here again.

Well it's just a brilliant find . Everything is high quality clean warm and asthetically pleasing . The beds are comfy the kitchen a joy to cook in the open plan lounge is realy nice to relax in after a day of long walks and spectacular views . Absolutely loved it .also great bookshelf of Lake District guidebooks, maps and literature . Great tv. And sound system that has jack so you can play own music through phone or tablet .

The parking is tight, just because it's difficult to turn in with a big car . But we did manage it for packing and there is Some free on street parking....just a short walk away at this time of year.
