About the property

Farmhouse in Ely, Cambridgeshire, England-Close to Cambridge, Ely and Norfolk Coast

Located in the heart of the Fenlands, accessed by private road, the farmhouse sits in a 1/3 acre of a fully landscaped garden. Ample parking is available. The house has a large patio area with BBQ. Entrance to the house is through a porch, which leads to the main hall. Off the main hall sits a large living room. On the other side there is a large modern kitchen with dining room. There is also a separate utility room. Completing the ground floor there is a shower room and toilet. On the the first floor, there is a large master bedroom with en-suite bathroom, plus two other double bedrooms and an additional bathroom. From this floor there is a access to balcony. On the 2nd floor there are two bedrooms which cater for 5 people. There is an additional toilet at this level. The property is fully central heated.

About David Alderton

Kirsty & David are a London based couple with a large family of teenagers. We inherited the property from Kirsty's parents and embarked upon a rebuild project which was completed in August 2009. We have tried to recreate the character of the old house and add touches of our own style to create a family home. It's our 2nd home, as we still have our family to raise in London. So, as you use the house you'll find panelling that was restored from the old house, you'll find furniture made by Kirsty's father in many of the rooms and you'll find family artefact's throughout. To help support our dream and to ensure that it is used, we have decided to let Scotland Farmhouse. We hope anyone booking the house will fall in love with the place as we have.

Why David Alderton chose Kings Lynn & West Norfolk

In its previous state, Scotland Farmhouse was a working smallholding, where Kirsty's parents grew their own fruit & vegetables, bred chickens, rabbits and goats. As the years passed, being self sufficient became more of a challenge and they came back to London to be closer to their family. The farmhouse started to deteriorate and subsidence took its toll forcing us to demolish the farmhouse. However, by reusing all the bricks, slate and some internal artifacts Scotland Farmhouse was rebuilt. The only new modern design feature was the inclusion of a balcony allowing visitors to view the Littleport Riviera, as at night you can see the distant twinkling of the “Lights of Littleport” across the flat fenlands that was once the sea.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Scotland Farmhouse is a large, secluded, fully facilitated country house, which is perfect for a family, group of friends or just a cosy couple. It has easy access to the Norfolk coast, Thetford Forest, The Broads, Cambridge and Ely. London is only an hour away by train. Being in the heart of the Fenland means access to many nature reserves, such as Welney Wetlands. Sandringham (Queen Elizabeth's country house) and Newmarket racecourse are a short drive away. Should you choose to put the car keys away, there garden games and fishing all available at the house.

A group of us stayed at Scotland Farmhouse for a lovely relaxing weekend. What a gorgeous property and a beautiful location! The house has everything you need, and there is plenty of space. David was very helpful and answered any questions we had very quickly. Would definitely like to visit again! Thank you :)

Lovely house, everything you need!

Our group rented the house for a quiet hen weekend. The house was absolutely beautiful and great for our group. We had plenty of room, the kitchen/dining area is a great social space (we didn't even use the lounge) and we had everything we needed provided. We enjoyed sitting outside in the evenings and the garden was lovely (although take some bug spray for the evenings!)

The location is remote so perfect for a relaxing weekend, the big supermarkets is about 20 minute drive.

David was great to deal with and very responsive to questions etc.

Will definitely look to come back!

Lovely house with beautiful garden

My partner and I had a lovely long weekend at this place over the summer. The place offers a lot of space and still feels very cosy. The beds were extremely comfortable and we enjoyed cooking together in the spacious kitchen. The terrace and garden area offer a lot of space to have a BBQ or just gather outside on a sunny day. The nearby river provided great fishing opportunities and as my partner and I love to go fishing together we really enjoyed having the 10 mile bank so close by. A little town nearby called Littleport provided us with all the shops we needed and we also went to a really nice market in the area that was on over the weekend which sold local products such as meats and vegetables. I can only recommend staying at this lovely house. We really enjoyed all the peace and quiet and felt at home here.

Rural retreat with all the modern comforts.

Ideal location for the bank holiday weekend, as we were able to enjoy the quiet rural setting and then go into Ely for the "Eel Festival" and local markets. The kitchen is well equipped and we cooked every day for eight of us. The rooms are comfortable and the quality bed linen was fresh and welcoming. One afternoon, we headed off for a stroll along the canal with the dogs and a local pint in glorious sunshine, but equally we enjoyed a glass of wine on the terrace at home. The house is warm and the showers are brilliant. All in all, a real contrast from the constant buzz of central London where we relaxed and felt totally at home. We would recommend it to family and friends, as the perfect getaway or even to couples for a romantic break.
