About the property

Holiday Home in Cardoso, Nr. Barga, Tuscany, Italy - Secluded Location on Beautiful Hillside Site

La Fucina nestles above the Serchio valley which runs through the Garfagnana area of Tuscany not far from the historic walled city of Lucca. The private pool is 10 by 5 metres and enjoys stunning panoramic views of the Serchio valley and the Appenine and Apuane moutains. La Fucina was transformed from a barn into a comfortable dwelling house in 2006/2007 and is constructed from the local “Cardoso” stone, named after the quaint but lively little village just up the hill. This barn renovation retains all the character of a Tuscan country dwelling with chestnut beams and terracotta tiles whilst giving the guest all that is required for modern living. Our information pack (see our website - link below) gives details of the places of interest and restaurants with a price guide to help you enjoy for yourself the pleasures of this beautiful area. Our website has more info/photos and recent guest views of the house and area.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Ruth, Thank you very much for letting us have your lovely house. We had a great time, saw Lucca, Barga and Florence and all the way up the valley including the caves. It was hot so we used the pool a lot. We ate out quite often and recommend the Mercato Contadino and the restaurant up by the dammed lake, Al Laghetto. As you said, virtually impossible to get a poor meal. Thank you.

Wonderful views, great place to stop and unwind.

  • 5 of 5

Simple journey - fly into Pisa then an easy one hour drive to La Fucina (easy to drop by the Tower en route.) The villa is comfortable and clean with a wonderful outdoor area for meals and/or simply lazing by the pool with the wonderful views as the sun tracks over through the day.

The main bedroom has views across and along the valley - had the great experience of sunbathing by the pool as we watched thunderstorms roll around the other side of the mountains all afternoon.

Nearby there's an easy-to-reach supermarket to stock your fridge and lots of typically Tuscan towns to explore from nearby Barga (10 mins) to Castelnuovo (20 mins) and the fantastic Lucca (35 mins.)

A lovely place to chill out. Easy to reach, great to stop, explore or balance the two.

Perfect position for exploring the region!

  • 4 of 5

We had the most wonderful 10 days at La Fucina. Beautiful setting, fantastic pool and homegrown vegetables in abundance! The villa is perfectly placed to explore the region and was close enough to everything we needed, whilst being secluded and private at the same time. Ruth has thought of everything that a family might need to enjoy their stay at La Fucina. A car is a must! The local towns and villages were amazing and we look forward to another visit soon!

Rural Tuscan Hillside Escape

  • 4 of 5

The description of this villa on the website was accurate and the pictures helped a lot. It was exactly as it appeared. It was a beautiful property, clean and well maintained with the crowning glory of a magnificent swimming pool which was used a lot in the intense July heat. The owner, Ruth, was very helpful and always responded quickly to emails. The area around the villa and the surrounding countryside was lovely. Lucca was an easy driving distance away. It's a perfect property if you want a relaxing break in the country but It was a drive to get anywhere else though with no restaurants or bars within easy walking distance. Having said that many of the nearest restaurants were excellent - Mercato contadino was notable and well worth a visit.

The downside for us was the lack of air conditioning. Although not generally a fan of artificial cooling we were there in a heat wave and it meant that we had to leave windows open all night so we were prey to the local mosquito population!

But, in summary, a lovely villa in a lovely part of a lovely country. Thank you Ruth.

Owner's Response: I have good quality room fans but these were clearly insufficient for the most extreme heat wave that there has been in a decade. I have recently purchased a portable air conditioner which should rectify any future issues of this nature.

Perfect Tuscan Break

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at the house. So peaceful and quite. It's a wonderful spot. The weather was very hot and the pool at just the right temperature, The house is lovely and perfect for our holiday,

The surrounding hill towns are well worth a visit. Barga old town is a real gem with good restaurants.
