La Tannerie brings together the joy of country living with the convenience of town dwelling. Imagine not having to get into your car each morning to fetch your fresh croissants from the boulangerie! Instead, a short stroll brings you to all the facilities that this town has to offer, including supermarkets, bakers, bars and restaurants, as well as one of the best local markets in the region. Our tree-lined garden is child-friendly and has a fenced and heated swimming pool.
We are originally from Colchester but live here at La Tannerie all year round. We took the decision to 'give it a go' and gave up our jobs as a languages teacher and in the NHS in 2004. More than ten years later we are still enjoying the combination of the French lifestyle and a job that brings us into contact with a huge variety of clients. We still derive a great deal of pleasure out of seeing people enjoying their time at La Tannerie and take it as a huge compliment that many return year after year.
Jeremy Smith purchased this cottage in 2004
Having watched every episode of 'A Place in the Sun' we knew that we wanted to run a gite complex in the south west of France. We were familiar with parts of the Dordogne having spent many holidays there, but knew nothing of its neighbour, the Charente. But a long weekend was all it took for us to discover La Tannerie and put in an offer! The peaceful rolling countryside, reliable climate and easy connections with the UK made it a simple decision! Within an hour or so are the major cities of Bordeaux and Perigueux, the vineyards of Cognac, Bergerac and St Emilion, and the Atlantic coast with its resorts and fishing villages. The area is served by major airports at Bordeaux and Bergerac. Chalais is minutes from the main A10 and the TGV stops at Angouleme.
It is La Tannerie's unique position in the centre of the market town of Chalais that is appreciated by all of our visitors. Within a few minutes stroll are supermarkets, boulangeries, cafés, restaurants, banks, pharmacies, doctors and dentists. Yet within the tree-lined grounds of La Tannerie you would never know you were in a town.

During the peak summer period our changeover day is Saturday, with departure by 10am and arrival after 4pm.
Outside of this period we are able to be more flexible.
This was a working trip but the property was clean, cosy and comfortable. It is situated right in the centre of Chalais so within walking distance of all local amenities. It was a perfect base for our activities and I can imagine, if on holiday, it would be just as ideal. The owners were very hospitable, on hand but also fairly inconspicuous, clearly available if you needed them.
We are 2 families and took 2 properties at La Tannerie. We stayed for 2 weeks during August when the weather was hot and sunny. The properties are lovely with really good size living space and bedrooms. Well equipped kitchen with everything we needed. The pool, gardens and surroundings are lovely with plenty of space for all the guests. La Tannerie is in a great location. The town has everything anyone could need and the bars and restaurants are friendly and good value. We used the car 3 times in 2 weeks - a real holiday!!
The owners, Liz & Jeremy are lovely people. Nothing is too much trouble and they were always on hand for advice or to provide help booking places, recommending restaurants or just for a cup of tea. They also have a great collection of DVD's and a huge number of books to keep everyone entertained.
We'd recommend taking the time to see the WW2 village Oradour-sur-
Glane. It is just under 2 hours drive but well worth the visit. Also a visit to see the retired police horses is a great afternoon out. The curry night at La Bonne Humeur was excellent value and very tasty. However, make sure you have plenty of time as the service is very relaxed!
We can't recommend La Tannerie highly enough. We had an excellent holiday and came back relaxed and feeling like we'd really had a break. Thanks very much Liz and Jeremy!!!
