About Jeremy Smith

We are originally from Colchester but live here at La Tannerie all year round. We took the decision to 'give it a go' and gave up our jobs as a languages teacher and in the NHS in 2004. More than ten years later we are still enjoying the combination of the French lifestyle and a job that brings us into contact with a huge variety of clients. We still derive a great deal of pleasure out of seeing people enjoying their time at La Tannerie and take it as a huge compliment that many return year after year.

Jeremy Smith purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Jeremy Smith chose Chalais

Having watched every episode of 'A Place in the Sun' we knew that we wanted to run a gite complex in the south west of France. We were familiar with parts of the Dordogne having spent many holidays there, but knew nothing of its neighbour, the Charente. But a long weekend was all it took for us to discover La Tannerie and put in an offer! The peaceful rolling countryside, reliable climate and easy connections with the UK made it a simple decision! Within an hour or so are the major cities of Bordeaux and Perigueux, the vineyards of Cognac, Bergerac and St Emilion, and the Atlantic coast with its resorts and fishing villages. The area is served by major airports at Bordeaux and Bergerac. Chalais is minutes from the main A10 and the TGV stops at Angouleme.

What makes this cottage unique

It is La Tannerie's unique position in the centre of the market town of Chalais that is appreciated by all of our visitors. Within a few minutes stroll are supermarkets, boulangeries, cafés, restaurants, banks, pharmacies, doctors and dentists. Yet within the tree-lined grounds of La Tannerie you would never know you were in a town.

Lovely Stay In A Great Location.

  • 5 of 5

We were going to be in France and were looking for somewhere nice to stay in a little village out of Bordeaux and found this accommodation on line prior to our departure from Australia. It ticked most of our boxes and was very reasonably priced.

Booking was easy on line and we had great communication with the owners, Jeremy and Liz. The hosts were English so there were no language barriers. They were very helpful and made out stay all the more enjoyable.

It is situated in a good position, was easy to find in the middle of the village and was walking distance to most things.

Everything was supplied, including condiments in the kitchen, maps and pamphlets on things to do in the area. The cottage had its own little library and was also hooked up to Sky pay TV, so there were heaps of channels to watch and all in English!

Quiet and plenty of car parking on site.

Has a pool and lots of gardens.

We had a private terrace with a table and chairs and ate most of our meals out there, which was very enjoyable.

Whilst we were there, we had a couple of days in the 30's, but the inside of the cottage kept cool. And there was the swimming pool which was kept clean and at a nice temperature.

Complimentary breakfast starters as well, which was a nice touch. Coffee, tea bags, milk, bread, margarine, jam, biscuits and a bottle of red wine were nice touches.

Would recommend and have no hesitation in staying there again.

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure to have our Australian guests staying here, and six nights just didn't feel like long enough! We are naturally delighted that they were happy with the gite and our secluded location right in the centre of the village. We would like to thank them for taking the time to write this review. They would be very welcome at any time!

Charming and quite

  • 5 of 5

A lovely holiday home with all your comforts met!! I have a bad back and the bed was so comfortable that it didn't play up.

Jeremy and Liz were lovely and nothing was to much trouble..

We loved BBQing in a pretty courtyard.

The pool was so welcoming in the heat and clean with beautiful surroundings..

Would definitely return!

The town had everything you need and you don't need the car to go off shopping..

10 out of 10 for our family

In the centre of things

  • 4 of 5

This was a working trip but the property was clean, cosy and comfortable. It is situated right in the centre of Chalais so within walking distance of all local amenities. It was a perfect base for our activities and I can imagine, if on holiday, it would be just as ideal. The owners were very hospitable, on hand but also fairly inconspicuous, clearly available if you needed them.

Excellent holiday!!

  • 5 of 5

We are 2 families and took 2 properties at La Tannerie. We stayed for 2 weeks during August when the weather was hot and sunny. The properties are lovely with really good size living space and bedrooms. Well equipped kitchen with everything we needed. The pool, gardens and surroundings are lovely with plenty of space for all the guests. La Tannerie is in a great location. The town has everything anyone could need and the bars and restaurants are friendly and good value. We used the car 3 times in 2 weeks - a real holiday!!

The owners, Liz & Jeremy are lovely people. Nothing is too much trouble and they were always on hand for advice or to provide help booking places, recommending restaurants or just for a cup of tea. They also have a great collection of DVD's and a huge number of books to keep everyone entertained.

We'd recommend taking the time to see the WW2 village Oradour-sur-

Glane. It is just under 2 hours drive but well worth the visit. Also a visit to see the retired police horses is a great afternoon out. The curry night at La Bonne Humeur was excellent value and very tasty. However, make sure you have plenty of time as the service is very relaxed!

We can't recommend La Tannerie highly enough. We had an excellent holiday and came back relaxed and feeling like we'd really had a break. Thanks very much Liz and Jeremy!!!
