Cottage in Appleton-le-Moors, Nr. Pickering, North Yorkshire Moors - Peaceful and Secluded Moor-edge Retreat in Beautiful and Unspoiled Countryside

Darley Cottage is located in a quiet village at the edge of the Moors. It is comfortably appointed and conveniently located for hikers, birders, and touring the countryside and visiting places of interest. A week with builders next door

  • 3 of 5

Appleton-le-Moors is a pleasant village and makes a convenient base for exploring the area; Darley Cottage fronts the surprisingly busy village street - light sleepers may be disturbed by traffic noise and the lights (left on all night) across the road. In addition, the beds in the twin room have noisy mattresses!

The house was clean and tidy when we arrived; the decor, however, is a little tired and the dark woodwork makes the kitchen a rather gloomy place to prepare food in. We could find no means of opening downstairs windows - this was particularly a problem in the bathroom which had a fusty smell which could have been dispelled if we had been able to let some fresh air in.

We left early because it was impossible to relax in the cottage during the day, or in the garden, because of building work next door: scaffolders at work even on a bank holiday and deliveries of tiles and roofers at work from shortly after 8am during the rest of the week - rubbish dropped in the garden and builder's dust in the atmosphere.

superb location in a good little cottage with a super garden

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay in Darley Cottage, although as there was no garden furniture other than a bench and low table, it was not possible to eat outside in this wonderful garden. On the other hand the local pub restaurant serves fantastic food. You need to book on Friday Saturday and Sunday. No freezer other than the freezer compartment in the fridge, although online description says freezer.

From the Owner

After visiting Appleton-le-Moors for years to see family, David and Gloria, found just the right cottage. They have always enjoyed the village for its peace and continue to visit the cottage regularly, along with their children and their families. Following the retirement of David and Gloria's brother and sister-in-law, who looked after the cottage for many years, it is now managed by Nicola. Nicola lives in the village, very close to Darley Cottage and enjoys the village's strong community spirit and rural setting.

From the Owner

The cottage is comfortable and well equipped as an all year-round base for enjoying the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and the North Sea coast towns of Whitby and Scarborough. Situated in the heart of Appleton le Moors, a rare example of a C12th planned village, the cottage has retained many of its original features, such as beamed ceilings. The village verges and the Common are still grazed by sheep, as has been the case for many centuries.
