"Les Trois Anes" is a beautifully restored 300 year old Beanaise farmhouse, which has been recently renovated with exposed beams and stonework to keep its traditional character. It is situated in the quiet and relaxing village of Susmiou, just outside the old bastide town of Navarrenx, nestling in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The farmhouse offers high quality, self catering holiday accommodation or B&B for both summer and winter breaks. It is a wonderful environment in which to sit back, relax and unwind while exploring this diverse region with its fascinating history and outstanding natural beauty. In the summer it is not uncommon to see wild deer roaming freely and magnificent vultures soaring overhead whilst enjoying a glass of wine in the garden. For children, teenagers and those young at heart, there is a wealth of summer activities. During the winter months, there are several ski resorts, which offer skiing, snow boarding and even igloo building!

About the Owner

Shona and Ken moved to this beautiful area of South West France in 2007 with their young family after enjoying numerous holidays in the Pyrenees. Ken spent the first few years renovating our 300 year old Bearnaise farmhouse which now offers high quality, holiday accommodation. He is now self employed and maintains properties for second home owners, in addition to continuing with renovations at home and for other people. As a former language teacher in the UK, Shona is now a qualified English teacher in the local secondary school in Navarrenx. They both love the outdoor lifestyle and regularly enjoy walking their lively dog in the countryside with their three growing daughters.

We had an absolutely brilliant week at les Troisanes - the gite was in a brilliant position, peaceful and private but at the edge of a very pretty village and within easy walking distance of the supermarket and boulangerie - perfect.

We took 2 trips up to the Pyrenees which were absolute highlights and made all the easier with Ken and Shona's unstintingly generous help in suggesting and booking excursions for us. The nearby town of Navarenx was completely charming and we had some great evenings out here. The gite itself was cosy and well appointed and the donkeys next door were an enormous hit with our boys! Lovely spacious gite

A comfortable gite in a quiet village

We enjoyed our stay at Les Trois Anes very much; the peace at the gite was something to be treasured and the owners were helpful and friendly.

The location was c1.5 hrs away for visiting the Petit Trein d'Artouste, a train that runs at over 2000 meters in height, less than an hour to Biarritz and St Jean de Luz, and plenty of delightful historic villages to visit within 20 mins. We would definitely like to revisit. Marker/Bester party of 3.

Perfect! This is the word which best describes our stay in Les Trois Anes gîte... The house is well equipped, perfect for a family like us, with spacious bedrooms. The area is magnificent, between the sea and the mountains, there are lots of walks to do and the icing on the cake for the children are the 3 resident donkeys, who love to be fed carrots and apples. If you want tranquillity and relaxation, then this is the place for you with its pretty villages in the surrounding area. The owners of the house live in the house next door and they are adorable and always willing to help with advice on places to visit etc. We will definintely be back and very soon we hope!!!

Excellent gite

Stayed here for a week in July 2015. We are a party of 4 adults and the accommodation was perfect for us with 2 double en-suite bedrooms and spacious, comfortable, well equipped living room and kitchen. The weather was hot during our stay and we were glad to get back to the cool gite after days out in the sun. The location of the gite is very good with an excellent boulangerie and supermarket 5 minutes walk away, and the lovely town of Navarrenx also within easy walking distance. Shona and Ken were great hosts and were able to offer us advice on local restaurants and places of interest to visit.

We've stayed in many gites over the last 35 years and I can honestly say that this is one of the very best.

Great Gite, great hosts, great location

If you like tranquillity, beautiful scenery and ready access to French life, architecture and culture this is for you. The farmhouse gite has been beautifully restored by Ken, has lots of space inside and out and has all facilities needed for any length of stay. Ken & Shona were the perfect hosts and couldn't do enough to help and give advice on where to go and what to see. They really went the extra mile for us. There's a supermarket and boulangerie near their peaceful village, more facilities nearby in Navarrenx (a beautiful old town) and more extensive facilities in Oloron, 20 minutes away. There's no end of things to do and see within an hours drive and we even had a train trip to San Sebastian (very well worth visiting) and also to see Top 14 rugby at Bayonne (with Ken's help)! We're a retired couple but the gite is suitable for every age group and there's recreational facilities, including rafting and canoeing, available nearby. The Pyrenees were stunning and a trip on "The little train" at 5000ft plus is a must for adults and children. Don't miss the moving experience of the wartime detention camp at Gurs a few minutes drive from Les Trois Anes. You can't fail to enjoy a stay with Ken & Shona.

Beautiful house, location and great hosts

We stayed here for a week in June 2014. Les Trois Anes is a spacious 300 year old house on 3 levels, with 2 large bedrooms and 2 smaller attic bedrooms and 2 large bathrooms. It has been beautifully restored with all modern conveniences and yet the owners have maintained authentic charm, with exposed original beams and sections of Gascon stone walls. It is more spacious than the photos indicate. Ken and Shona have thought of every item their guests might need to be comfortable: guide books, a wide range of kitchenware, dinner ware and glassware, comfortable beds etc. The sitting and dining area is very comfortable and charmingly furnished. There is an efficient dishwasher and clothes washer/drier. The house is next door to the owners' home, but has its own spacious, private garden, with outdoor table, chairs, sun lounges and barbecue. This is a beautiful part of France, and staying in this house really added to our enjoyment of the region. Ken and Shona are English, and both speak French. They have lived in the area for about 10 years, so are wonderfully helpful with restaurant suggestions and so on. It is probably the best set-up rental house we have ever rented.

We bought a small holiday house in the area 10 years ago and couldn't stay away - spending every holiday in this beautiful part of the world. The draw of the sunshine, spectacular beaches and mountains, French food and wine was too tempting! Within 5 years, we had made the decision to move to France and buy ourselves a renovation project!!

The spectacular beaches of Biarritz, Bayonne and Anglet on the Atlantic coast and La Pierre St Martin (Ski Resort)are all about an hours drive from Les Trois Anes Gite.


Tarbes (Lourdes) and Biarritz airports are one hour (60km) from here. Both are served by Ryanair from the UK and Ireland.


The house is equidistant between the Atlantic coast and the Pyrenées mountains (60 minutes drive). We are a 15 minute walk from Navarrenx and on the 'Chemin de St Jacques de Compostelle' pilgrim walk from northern Spain.

Further Details:

The nearest supermarket and boulangerie are a 5 minute walk from here. All other amenities are to be found in Navarrenx including banks, restaurants, bars, local shops, an art gallery, office de tourisme, rafting and canoeing etc. There is a horse riding centre about 3 km away, also a paragliding and flying base.

  • Notes on accommodation: There is a large wood burning stove in the living room and electric heating in all rooms for the winter months. Each bedroom is equipped with a fan in case of very hot weather. The property is ideal for families with young children as the on-site owners can provide almost anything required to make life easier! A babysitting service is also available upon request, at an extra charge. Outside: The private lawned garden is totally secure with a stone barbecue and garden furniture for alfresco dining. Utility Room: The utility room adjoins the kitchen and you will find here the washing machine, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, extra storage space along with an iron/ironing board and all cleaning utensils. You could also store any additional large equipment here. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: There is an extra charge of £7.50 per person for the rental of bath towels and bed linen. There is no cleaning charge, provided that the house is left clean and tidy, otherwise a charge will be taken from the damage deposit. Other: Separate, secure barn for bike/ski storage.
