Fantastic - will definitely go back!

If you're looking for cheap accommodation in Benalmádena and aren't worried about the frills (hence the bargain price!), I would recommend these apartments! We stayed ten nights and arrived to an immaculate reception area and a clean and tidy apartment. Our apartment was spacious enough with a clean fridge and microwave and a small gas cooker that worked fine. Wifi was available and worked without any problems throughout our stay. The apartment had a ceiling fan and balcony doors/windows that can be fully opened - we didn't find the temperature an issue (we arrived end of August 2016). 5 odd minutes walk to the beautiful marina and beach. It was nice to be staying away from the crowds. The huge, towering hotels packed with people didn't appeal to us - it really was great to be staying in a quiet area but only a few minutes walk to bars, restaurants and shops. Pool area was cleaned daily. Pool was fine - really clean and we could see water was treated and hygienic. We spent a lot of time in the private pool area which is a sun trap so great for lying out on the sun bed for hours with a book and being able to cool off in the small (but deep) pool! Lidl is more or less opposite, however, if that's not your thing there are other supermarkets nearby. Friendly staff and great communication with the owner too. They're open all year round too. We will most certainly be going back and feel lucky we found it!

my worst holiday experience ever

  • 1 of 5

I was told i could check in at 12noon, after a 45min wait (which is fine by me) i walked in to what i would describe as a budget apt. then it all began to unfold....... a filthy ceiling fan that done nothing to cool the room which also had no light meaning no light throughout the bedroom/living area. the beds themselves were very much below budget and the matresses have to be at least 25 yrs old with lumps and bumps pointing in all directions. there was no bin, no toilet roll a lampshade with no lamp (until my friend asked for one) and no towels until i asked for 1 and was then presented with a crispy and crumpled towel with a stain on (although i was shown the stain when being handed) the towel. all of the above i can get over but then in the bathroom there were big lumps of hair stuck to the shower wall and the floor in the bath/shower was not only filthy but painted over and peeling meaning no shower for me. as if that wasnt enough i then walk out of the BR and through the "living" area to see a TV stand on the wall with "NO" TV just a wire hanging out and the cherry on the cake was the lack of lock on my ground floor balcony. no lock, no chain meaning i was very uncomfortable when leaving the apartment as i had a lot belongings, euros and passport etc. this is not an anti EL ANCLA review this is literally trying to explain my experience with room no. 18. i personally never even stayed there 1 night out of the scheduled 6 but was lucky enough to know many people in the area 1 of which helped me out massively. after 8 days near the marina, moving aprts and spending 1 day at el ancla i knew i couldnt stay for the whole 6 days nor could i afford another place for 6 nights and booked an early flight home. ive been to malaga 16 times and will continue to go 1 or 2 times a year, sorry but el ancla.........never again :(

Highs and lows at El Ancla

  • 3 of 5

A truer star rating would be 2.5 as my feelings about the flat are right in the middle. This was a first-time, girls-only, foreign holiday with my teenage daughter and we had been really looking forward to our breakaway. On arrival to our first floor flat my initial reaction was unfortunately disappointment. The accommodation appeared clean and tidy enough but was a bit more basic than I had expected. Little things like no bin, no drying cloth, no bottle opener, no cleaning apparatus for dishes were just a few of the negatives that could have made an improvement to the setting. The room had a ceiling fan which was covered with dust and did absolutely nothing to cool the flat. I purchased a couple of fans which just about made the temperature bearable. Sadly on our 2nd night a large cockroach made an appearance coming out of a cupboard so the option to leave a window open was out of the question. I realise that warm countries have such beasties but I do not want to share my living space with them and was none too happy when another one visited on our last night! Our fridge appeared to have a problem keeping things frozen in the ice box but was otherwise ok. The kitchen space felt inadequate to prepare meals so other than cereal at breakfast we ate out in the evenings.

The positive sides of El Ancla are the location, the swimming pool and the nice, helpful staff (Andrew and Philip). The pool is kept well maintained and the area around it is a very secluded sun trap. I am not sure how well this area would cope if all the residents were using it at once but we found it was generally quiet with only 1 or 2 other guests there, which was probably just as well as there are only 3 intact sun loungers. It was nice not to be at a big busy pool and we had good chats with some of the other residents, but could choose to be listening quietly to music at other times. I did see inside some of the other flats in the block and reckon the one we were in was nicer than some but less so than others.

Prior to our holiday I had spoken to the owner a few times on the phone and she sounds like a really nice lady, so I hope she will take on board some of the things I have said and perhaps instigate a few changes to improve on the experience of staying at El Ancla.

Budget but needs updated

  • 3 of 5

stayed for a week and for what we paid can't really complain. room was very hot at night...has a fan but no air con. pool was small but adequate. only had a few issues. 1 being that we were woke by a noisy neighbour at around 5 am almost every night who seemed to be arguing with someone and 2nd being that we had to clean the bathroom ourself on arrival it was filthy. there also wasnt a maid service we had to ask for fresh towels and there was no access to cleaning products. as I say tho overall got what we paid for a budget appt just needs to be updated.

GREAT VALUE appartments in Benalmadena

  • 4 of 5

We have enjoyed staying many times before in these comfortable appartments in Benalmadena. The appartments are family run and staff are friendly and attentive. The accomodation is clean and has recently been decorated. There are always members of staff around so if you have any questions they will be happy to assist. There is a patio area which is equipped with a swimming pool and deck chairs and is a suntrap for most of the day. El Ancla is situated just a stroll away from the lovely long sandy beach and the famously attractive marina with plenty of boats. It is also virtually across the road from a supermarket and there are a range of bars, restaurants and shops on the street and surrounding area. It is easy to stay here without hiring a car as it is only approximately 20 from the airport and there is regular public transport to many areas of interest. Overall we have always had a lovely holiday with wonderful weather and would reccommend for great value stays in a good location.
