Stunning 19th century stone cottage and summer house with breath-taking views of ancient Corfe Castle and Poole Harbour. WIFI AVAILABLE Kingston is the jewel in the Isle of Purbeck with fantastic walks and empty beaches a mile away. Enid Blyton lived nearby and based a lot of her stories here. The village is quiet but has a destination pub in The Scott Arms which has great food. The cottage has been recently restored and a large conservatory kitchen has added. Great for a large family party. However, its character has been very much kept. The Summer house is just 10 feet from the main cottage and has two bedrooms and shower room so allows two families to have some privacy. The large 80ft garden has a wooden fort and swings and a slide for children. The patio has a stone table which is ideal for barbecue lunches overlooking the castle. 18 West St is five minutes drive from Corfe Castle and 10 minutes from Swanage which has a beautiful Blue Flag bay. Perfect for children.

About the Owner

Josephine and James Pembroke have two properties on Owners Direct as they are easily the best Website in the UK. We bought our cottage in Purbeck, Dorset (E1782) in 1995. The cottage had been owned by the estate and was in need of attention. We stripped off the old wallpaper and unearthed the original flagstones and added the large kitchen conservatory in 1992. We bought in Purbeck as James had gone to school there and we were married in St James opposite Kingston Cottage.

In the mid 90's we started looking for a small villa abroad and by accident we bought Masseria Il Trappeto, (IT2578).

Which was a very large ruin which had not been used since the 1940's. That was a vast restoration project, which was achieved amazingly swiftly by Italian craftsmen. We love the area and the food.

Only one criticism the 'plumbing' which upstairs is very interesting!!

A great stay in a stunning location

Friends and family of mine stayed at the cottage for the weekend of my 40th and had a great time. The kitchen was a great entertaining area and when it did rain one evening the lounge was a cosy and welcoming place with a great fire. We joked that if we were in the kitchen or garden and someone didnt mention the view for more than 5 minutes we were all shocked. Having a great pub on the doorstep never does any harm too. I agree the cottage isnt conventional in its layout but it was full of character and worked great for two families with kids and a couple of other adults too. Everyone said how they would like to visit agin asap!

Ideal for families

We love coming here. This was our fourth stay here and we have booked for next year. It is ideal for extended families, from great grandad down to grandchildren. There's plenty of space to be together and to be apart! The kitchen is well equipped - there are even cookery books. There is a huge selection of books and comfy chairs in the sitting room - grandad's favourite place. Lovely garden to sit in and plenty of space for the children to play, including some play equipment. We all just feel so comfortable and relaxed here. It could do with a bit of tlc and the upstairs ensuite is certainly a bit quirky but it hasn't put us off coming back. There are plenty of places to visit without having to travel miles and there is a good bus service through the village. Our favourite places and things to do - the beach, Monkeyworld, the Blue Pool, Corfe Castle, local Steam Fayre, walks, the steam train, Tyneham. The list is long and we seem to add to it each year. Booking easy and Josephine really friendly.

Location

From the Owner

We bought in the area as we were married in the church in the village in 1993. James went to school in the area and was confirmed in the church so we were allowed to marry there, what a location! Especially as it is known as the Cathedral of Purbeck. The architect was a Mr Street who designed the law courts in London. Purbeck is a unique area it has every different kind of beach from long golden sands to pebbles. It is fantastic for walking, we never take the car and from the cottage you can walk to Hounstout (cliff walk stunning) or Swyre Head which is the one of the highest points of the coast line you can see the Isle of Wight. The village is very quiet and perfect to walk around, with it's pretty stone houses. Also you can walk down over the valley to Corfe Castle (5 min drive).

Bournemouth - 20 miles.

Lulworth Cove - 12 miles.

Further Details:

Swanage has two supermarkets, good butchers and fishmongers. Great too for fishing and boat trips. The Scott Arms the village pub serves delicious food and has the same stunning view as us. Also, bustling Corfe Castle is a 5 minute drive or a 30 minute walk across the fields and has a fantastic Baker and Clealls which sells all locally sourced food and vegetables. The Square and Compass is 1.5 miles away or a 40-minute walk. This completely un wrecked pub wins constant awards for its beer and unspoilt atmosphere.

We adore the cottage it is the place where we can unwind. The sitting room is really cosy in the winter and we pile large amounts of logs on the fire and toast crumpets. The kitchen with its added extension (in 1992) is fantastic as it really is a big living space and it hosts the amazing views of the castle, the sea (Poole Harbour) and the church. There is a large Purbeck stone table in the garden where we sit (all year round) with a bottle of wine and just stare at the view. I used to tease my husband about going to the pub (with the same view) and asked him why he went to it as we have our own private view without people - peaceful and perfect. The beaches in the area are unbeatable and at Chapmans Poole, our nearest cove is very quiet and unknown.

  • Notes on accommodation: Perfect for two families wanting bucket and spade fun or walkers wanting a cosy, well-equipped base. Or Cottage (sleeps 6) without Summerhouse can be rented in low season. Dogs are very welcome the first one is free then £10 for each extra dog. Outside: There is a stone table which seats 10 people plus a 110cm bistro table. There are three teak soun loungers and eight teak chairs. The garden is tiered but you have a full view of the fort, swing and slide from the kitchen and patio table. There is a fenced pond which is only one ft deep and attracts butterflies and birds. The garden is secure for pets. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels included. One large bathsheet and one hand towel each person. House cleaned and linen changed once a week. Other: There is a front hall which is ideal for keeping coats, boots, bucket and spades.
