Beautiful family chalet next to nursery slope

Overview

Property

Updated: 22-Aug-2016
The best location in Les Contamines?

A traditional chalet with an extension added in 2008, overlooking the village from the edge of the nursery slope. Our decoration has been lovingly sourced from around France with the piece de resistance probably being the long wooden dining table next to the panoramic windows overlooking garden and nursery slope. The chalet has an abundance of recreational space ,including multiple sofa sections with fireplace, large television area,a quiet zone in the attic,as well as a basement game room. There is a big terrace with a dining table, as well as a proper garden for play and relax time. The chalet has dedicated parking for two cars in what is otherwise a very sparsely trafficked part of Conta- and with our smallest guests in mind , the garderie/nursery, is just across the nursery slope- 1 minute walk. For the foodies, it will be reassuring to know that, the best restaurant in the village is just a minute in the other direction.

About the Owner

We are a Scandinavian /French couple who met in London, and started visiting Contamines at the turn of the century. After a long search, we finally found the chalet of our dreams, located next to the nursery slope,,which was an important consideration given the amount of children of all ages in our families.

Over the years,we have learned to love not only the immediate ski terrain but also the wider national park with its endless alpine opportunities summer and winter. We have also taken up some new sports with some reluctance. We never expected to be practising alpine climbing or mountain biking when we first arrived and on snowy days we appreciate the cross country tracks and snowshoe trails.

The best chalet....

  • 5 of 5

We have now spent two summer holidays in Les Contamines at this chalet and I have to say it is the best chalet we have ever stayed in. The photos do not do it justice. It's a beautiful characterful chalet that is deceptively big. The bedrooms are beautiful and clean and have amazing views of the valley - I loved my morning cup of tea looking at the mountains! The open plan living room has ample space for everyone to chill out on comfy sofas and the dining area is fantastic with a massive rustic table that swallows up two big families. But definitely the best bit is the garden/patio area. The views are breathtaking and for me there was no better way to start my evening than with a gin and tonic soaking up the alps.

The chalet is also in a really good position, within easy walking distance of the village which has great restaurants (the fondues are addictive) and a very special local bar! One of our favourite things to do was to take the cable car (with our dogs) and go walking, or swimming in the mountain lake. Most of my family are cyclists and they raved about the great rides but my sister and I took it easier and hired electric bikes from the village bike shop - really recommend it, masses of fun.

Further afield, if you ever make it, there is Megeve, Saint Gervais Les Bains and Chamonix - all beautiful french towns well worth exploring.

It's not often that we return to the same place, let alone the same chalet but for sure we will be returning again to this one...

Unforgettable getaway

  • 5 of 5

Been here a few times now, and undoubtedly a great stay every time... A pleasant drive from Geneva airport without any fiddly roads to deal with is always a great way to start any break... A very homely feel but with enough room for 10 people, can make it as quiet & cosey or as fun as you like... and only a walk away from great food / drink so no need for the hassle of a designated driver... As for the slopes, they're phenomenal, and never had the displeasure of qeues or crowds to deal with!! would choose this spot every year without a doubt!

Location

From the Owner

Les Contamines is the envy of many french ski resports due to its fantastic snow record, partly explained by its proximity to the Mont Blanc Massif. Yet,the village has turned down the opportunity to become a mass development and has opted to cultivate a model of sustainable tourism. Despite that, Contamines is amongst the most welcoming ski and summer sport destinations anywhere in the alps and the quality of skiing and hiking leaves nothing to be desired. The fact that we are one hour from Geneva and yet so unspoilt and literally at the end of the road, is a source of constant wonderment.

Special interest holidays:

Wonderful mountain stuff -walking, hiking, riding, climbing, biking etc, and as we're located on the the Mont Blanc Trail, the refuges of La Miage,Le Truc,La Balme,Tre la Tete,La Croix de la Col de Bonhomme, Roselette,La Mottet- all serving good food and offering beds during the summer season.A number of these refuges are within reach of smaller children and we see a lot of parents bringing their little ones along. There are cows to watch, fondues to eat, flowers to pick etc which makes for a lovely day out.

Coast/Beach:

The village has a newly constructed artificial swimming lake with beach, and riding, tennis, climbing and restaurant facilities nearby (ATP tournament in July).plus a network of mountain bike trails reachable from the gondola which is open in the summer. Down in neighbouring St Gervais,a large swimming pool complex opened in the spring of 2014 (indoor) and Megeve also has an allround excellent sports centre with spa facility, climbing wall, outdoor pool etc etc.

Travel:

Geneva 70 minutes - mostly on motorway. Lyon 2 hours. Chamberey 1½ hour. Le Fayet train station 20 minutes (Paris-4h48m direct). Also good access to Turin Airport from the A40 motorway through the Mont Blanc tunnel.

Just a few minutes walk from the main street/shopping/restaurants.

Further Details:

Main french supermarkets (Carrefour,Casino) operate in the village, and we also have a dedicated butcher and two boulangeries, in addition to the typical ski shops (8) and the interior decoration outfits.nmThe hypermarkets are located down in the valley (25 minutes) and Contamines has its own outdoor market every Tuesday with fresh produce on offer.

Facilities

From the Owner

We've been roaming around France and Italy, picking up furniture from countless brocantes and flea markets, endeavouring to create a personable and original living space for adults and youngsters alike. Our location, with the nursery slope 50 yards away (we created our own entrance in the fence), and the garderie for small children also a stone throw away- makes life a lot easier for families with small kids, and we have also organised the house with older kids in mind (different game zones and sleeping quarters)- but after a long day on the slopes and a few minutes in the sauna nursing a beer or two, guests will appreciate sitting down at the long wooden dinner table facing the slope and the mountains with the fireplace lit up.
