La Bergerie is a 100 year old converted cattle station at the edge of the village of Cruzy, 1 minute walking distance to shops (bakery, butchers, mini-mart) a cafe, children's playground and tennis courts. With incredible views across its own private vineyard and the fields beyond, and it's own private pool, the property combines the tranquility of a rural setting with the convenience of a small but friendly village nearby. Traditional red shutters and aircon throughout keep the house cool. Within easy access of beautiful beaches, the Canal du Midi, mountains, river swimming and kayaking of the High Languedoc National Park and historic Carcassonne. Explore the Cathar castles and ruins of the Languedoc.

About Sophie Brooks

Married couple with two children living in South Oxfordshire. Having lived abroad ourselves and returned to settle in England we wanted a bolthole in South of France to escape to for sun and relaxation in school holidays with our friends and family. We discovered the Languedoc when we bought our first house in the adjacent village in 2001.

Why Sophie Brooks chose Saint-Chinian area

Having fallen in love with the beauty, diversity, timeless way of life and peacefulness of the region, we decided to upgrade our property in 2006. We were incredibly fortunate to find La Bergerie, a converted stone farm building standing in its own 3 hectares of private vineyard, on the edge of the pretty village of Cruzy. Today we rent out the house in the high season to help offset the costs of maintaining the house, pool and vineyard.

What makes this farmhouse unique

We love cooking simple, fresh local produce, sampling the extremely reasonable but great local wines, eating in superb local restaurants including several Michelin starred establishments within 30 minutes drive. We love driving up into the Haut Languedoc to swim in the cool river when the days are long and hot, walking or cycling along the Canal du Midi, dipping in the Mediterranean sea without the stress of crowded beaches, visiting the Cathar castles and ruins and exploring the nearby ancient cities of Carcassonne, Narbonne, Pezenas and Agde.

Notes on accommodation: Safe and secure for children of all ages. Pool is fitted with safety alarm to automatically set when not in use to prevent accidents. Air-conditioning in 3 upstairs bedrooms and kitchen/dining room. Not required in ground floor bedroom as this remains cool but portable unit available in August. Heaters provided for all rooms and open fire in sitting room. Strictly no smoking inside the property. Outside: Lovely paved and gravelled garden area running into the private vineyard of 3 hectares. Private pool (8 x 4 metres) with tiled area and 6 sun loungers, covered dining area providing dining table and chairs for 10 people. BBQ and pizza oven area with seating and coffee table. First floor deep balcony with terrace overlooking pool and vineyard and pretty ceramic table and chairs with sun parasol. Utility Room: In front part of garage there is a tiled utility area with washing machine, large utility sink, and extra fridge-freezer, cupboard space etc. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bathroom towels and linen are included. Pool towels are available at an extra cost of £6 per person. Cots/hair chairs for rent. Returnable deposit of £200 payable on arrival. Property is cleaned at the end of each stay, or weekly over 14 nights. Other: Outdoor covered area underneath terrace with seating for 10-12 for cool shady dining. BBQ and pizza oven with seating area close to vineyard.

Superb holiday home

We had the most fantastic family holiday here. There were 7 of us - 3 generations and the beautifully appointed house fitted our needs perfectly. We particularly enjoyed the different eating areas both inside and out and the large and spotless swimming pool surrounded by flowering bushes.

The owners were extremely helpful with details and it was lovely being on the edge of a village with countryside views yet walking distance from the boulangerie for the morning croissant and bagettes.

The area surrounding the gite provided us with a wide range of interesting days out, including cannonying in the mountain rivers, wine tasting and visiting cathar castles. We highly recommend this gite.

Booking Notes:
Deposit of 33% is taken to secure booking, the remainder due 6 weeks prior to arrival. In the event of cancellation, the deposit will be held until the property is re-rented for those weeks, or lost if not. Bookings taken up to 12 months in advance. Returnable damage deposit of £150 is also payable prior to arrival.

Changeover Day:
Changeover/arrival day is Saturday ONLY June, July, August. We can have some flexibility outside those dates. Departure by 10am, arrival after 4pm.
