Full of charm and character, nestled amongst peach orchards and cherry groves it is situated in a tranquil hamlet in the heart of breathtaking countryside, yet only a few minutes from the "chic" historic market town of Thuir. The sun kissed Mediterranean beaches, cosmopolitan Perpignan, Spain and the Pyrenees Mountains are all within 30 minutes drive.

About Bob Lucy

I emigrated to France 14 years ago. My first task was to rebuild the 200 year old ruin of a farmhouse Mas Den Gariste. During my stay here I met, fell in love (sorry a bit cheesy but true) and married my wife Helene.

We live in a nearby farmhouse with our animals, 3 horses, 4 cats and our rescued dog Rockie. Anna my 23 y/o step daughter shares our home and life but is soon to start her own adventure with her soon to be husband in a recently purchased town house in nearby Thuir. My own daughters their husbands and my grand children and father visit us and this idyllic region several times a year, so I guess we are very lucky.

Why Bob Lucy chose Camélas

I bought this farmhouse as it ticked all the boxes. Location location location. The climate is the best in the whole of France, and the locals are just so welcoming against what most brits imagine. There is just so much to do here as we have the coast the mountains and Spain is just a 30 minute drive away. Supermarkets are still closed on Sundays which shows our pace of life is very simple and a lot less commercial than the UK or indeed other parts of France.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The benefits of staying at the farmhouse Gariste is that you are in a very peaceful hamlet and yet only 5-8 minutes away from the chic market town of Thuir.

The beaches of the Med are just 30 minutes away. A great location for a family holiday.There is a fantastic completely private pool with lockable gates, making it very safe for families with adventurous young children.

The large games field is equipped for several sports including football, volletball, badminton, table tennis, and bowls (the French national pastime).

Notes on accommodation: Room fans are available on demand. Outside: The garden approx. 1 acre, formerly a kiwi fruit farm divides into 3 areas. The first contains a very necessary shaded area, in which there is a small flower garden with a "conversational bench" and a table and chairs suitable for aperitifs. The second part of the garden houses a large private not overlooked swimming pool (10m x 5m) which is fully enclosed with lockable gates making it safe for families with young children. The pool is fully maintained. The pool is surrounded by a patio and lawned area ensuring that there is sufficient space for sunbathing and complete relaxation. There is also a pergola that offers some very welcome shade. Sun beds are provided. The third part of the garden has a large grass area and is a great play area for all ball games, ideal for children to play football. A goal with nets and ball is provided. Utility Room: Washing machine and house cleaning tools and products. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: A linen pack can be ordered at £6 per person per week. It includes bed linen a bath and hand towel. It does not include pool or beach towels. A 50e charge is levied on all bookings that covers the complete and final house clean. Other: There are 2 separate balconies off the grand lounge. The first has countryside and mountain views and the second is for al fresco dining and is equipped with a BBQ and dining table and chairs.

Relaxing and great location

I came with my two boys (6 & 8) for a week.

The weather was a bit iffy, but even so, we had a fantastic week. I forced them out of the house, but actually they would have been content to stay by the pool every day.

The local village was relaxing in the evening, and Perpignan was a fun day out.

All in all, a great base for a wonderful holiday.

Bob was a wonderful host, and he made me and the boys feel very welcome.

Lovely converted farmhouse in an ideal location

Mas d'en Garriste is a 200 year old farmhouse converted by Bob Lucy into a holiday let and situated close to the foothills of the Pyrenees.

We spent a wonderful 6 weeks there in September and October of this year (2016). Naturally such an old building has its quirks (several of the doorways require ducking at 5' 8" or above, but this is pointed out on them all) however it also has all the facilities one could require. My wife spent many hours in the large pool well into October, which Bob regularly checked, cleaned and treated as necessary, whilst we both enjoyed breakfasting in the sun on the terrace and dining outside, again right up to the end of October.

The living space inside is spacious and comfortable, however those with creaky knees should know it is on three floors with the master bedroom, bedroom with bunk beds and Shower room on the top floor, the smallest double (very quaint) on the first floor and the other double off the kitchen. There are other steps internally and externally as well.

The farmhouse is situated very close to Thuir, which has a lovely Saturday market and major tourist attractions are within easy reach - Carcassonne, Girona, Collioure for example. Lesser known attractions such as Castelnou and the Abbaye San Martin du Canigou are also close and provide good walking opportunities.

Within walking distance is the local organic baker Eric who is a lovely guy and sells gluten-free bread and even gluten-free flour (important for me as I am Coeliac) as well as the superb restaurant, Le Gecko, who provide a warm atmosphere, great food and were also able to cope with my specific dietary needs.

Bob was a good host, a mine of local information and always available in the case of a couple of small settling-in queries we had in the first couple of days.

We hope to return at some point to this superb corner of France and would heartily recommend Mas d'en Garriste to others.

Lovely Cool Farmhouse in Stunning Region of France

Mas den Garriste is a lovely home about half an hour from Perpignan.

Thers lots to do either at the farm, or in numerous locations nearby - we barely scratched the surface

We had a wonderful stay in this part of France which we'd not explored before. The property was ideally located for exploration of the Pyrenees, Carcassonne, many other beautiful towns, the beach etc etc. We loved the pool area which was clean and large and perfectly safe for our 10 year old daughter to play in by herself - we all had a wonderful time in the pool. The terrace area of the house is definitely the best bit - we had breakfast, lunch and dinner there in the open air, the lizards and bats for company later in the evening which we found fascinating. The three floors would not suit everyone and we think that families with small children or elderly relatives would struggle with all the stairs however the downstairs double bedroom benefits all. We were let down by our original choice of accommodation just six weeks before departure and Bob was so kind and forthcoming, quickly getting back to us via email and securing our holiday for us. Nothing was too much trouble for him and he even lent us a cool box so we could picnic on the beach. The master bedroom bed was incredibly creaky however and could do with some looking at but if this is all we have to worry about, we're doing pretty well! As there is no British TV and only a small supply of English DVDs, we took some with us and were glad to have done so. The villa was really well equipped in the kitchen and having wifi was essential for staying in touch with work and family; there was always lots of lovely hot water and overall a wonderful, comfortable stay.

Perfect House, Perfect Setting

We could not have asked for a better property or location and thoroughly recommend staying here.

We stayed with our old teenage children and a couple of their friends. The property is well laid out and there was plenty of room for everyone. The terrace and BBQ area is ideally situated, whether for reading in the shade on the daybed or eating meals at the table which would comfortably seat 8. In the evening it has perfect views and was so peaceful.

The pool is large and we were all able to swim at the same time with no issues. The pool area and games field are large and well laid out/ stocked. We all enjoyed playing table tennis, badminton and boules late into the evening. The pool area itself is securely locked and would be safe for children of all ages.

The area was lovely to explore, whether the beaches ( long and sandy), the local ports (very pretty - though parking can be difficult) or up into the mountains and the local town of Thuir has everything you might wish for (supermarkets; restaurants and on the Saturday we were there had an amazing festival). Though be prepared to drive for 20 mins to an hour to get to places.

Finally, Bob, the owner, could not have been more kind or helpful. When we were booking he took the time to talk us through a few of the properties he manages in the area to ensure we had the most suitable. He was very helpful when suggesting places to go and see and recommending places to go and eat locally.

We are already thinking about a return trip.
