Property

Updated: 17-Nov-2016
MORTAGNE nr ROYAN. COUNTRY COTTAGE nr BEACHES. LOVELY SEA VIEWS HEATED POOL WIFI - Secluded, Peaceful, Large Heated Pool, Garden, Close To Village, 20 Mins Beaches

Moulin Rompu enjoys perhaps the most beautiful location on the Gironde estuary. Surrounded by vines and sunflowers, it has an elevated position with spectacular views across the sea to the Medoc. The sunsets are amazing! This newly built holiday cottage (2007) has character and charm as well as all the latest mod cons. French windows open on to the south facing terrace and secluded garden from which you can enjoy the views. The large geothermally heated pool is shared only with the English owners who live in the adjacent house. Within a 10 minute walk to the pretty village of Mortagne there are bakeries, a well stocked Co-op supermarket, butchers, post office, cafes, tourist office and a weekly market. The lower part of the village is the picturesque little port with more restaurants and bars, fishing, boat hire. The golden sandy beaches of St Georges are 20 mins drive. For those interested in birdwatching the woods, estuary and marshes are a paradise. Excellent mobile phone reception.

Excellent accommodation for two. Villa is well equipped, owners very helpful especially with recommendations for food and drink. Pool is excellent, really warm. Lots to do locally. John and Fran

The property was exactly as described and more than lived up to expectations. First class accommodation, spotlessly clean and good quality furnishings, towels and linen. Would not hesitate to recommend and will ourselves be returning this year! Peter and Lesley

Its been another wonderful stay with you in Mortagne. The cottage is perfect place to be - so easy to stay in and enjoy. We're totally de-stressed!

Sue & Barry

The gite is superb and in a stunning location. In equal measure, we enjoyed the pool, picturesque towns and villages, and the wonderful food and wine. We seem to have been all over, yet never got out of "fully relaxed" mode! The week seemed like a month! A bientot!

A clean, well equipped cottage in peaceful location

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous time at Moulin Rompu. The cottage was spotlessly clean with everything you could ask for. The linen and towels were very good quality and the bed very comfortable. The bottle of wine in the fridge was a real treat. Thanks! The location is perfect and, whilst the cottage is close to the village, it felt like we were in the heart of the country with breathtaking views of the estuary and stunning sunsets to enjoy with a glass of wine. The swimming pool is a real bonus and is in a sunny and sheltered spot.

Howard and Liz were warm, friendly and welcoming and really accommodating and helpful. We will definitely be returning for another dose of peace and tranquility

Beautiful location, well equipped and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was fabulous with everything you could want. Well equipped and clean with good quality linen and towels. exquisite views from the private garden. The pool is a real plus also. Although close to the village it felt as if we were deep in the country as it was so peaceful. Howard and Liz were warm and friendly and all you could ask for in hosts. We will definitely visit again

excellent gite in all respects

  • 5 of 5

Gite is very comfortable and has all the facilities one needs. Location is excellent with very good transport links for wine, sightseeing and relaxing on beaches. Easily the best gite we have stayed in for the last 10+years.

Liz and Howard are ideal hosts, available when needed but also discreet. They were very helpful in our quest to find a house. View over estuary is superb with the setting sun. We were blessed with good weather late in the season which helps and the good sized pool was most welcome. "Local" restaurants offer very good value. In all, hard to fault and would not hesitate to stay again.

We will return...!!

  • 5 of 5

A very comfortable, beautifully presented and well equipped gite. It's set in a quiet location with lovely gardens and an amazing view. The pool is immaculately maintained, and warm! Plenty of local walks with good views and wildlife, especially birds on the marshes. Interesting harbour area you can walk to with choice of restaurants. Many cultural places to visit like Saintes and the citadel at Blaye, and lots of beaches further north if that's your thing. We had two gorgeous weeks weather-wise which made everything even better! There's still lots to do and see and maybe re-do, so we aim to return. Thanks Liz and Howard for being such perfect hosts.

Great Holiday

  • 4 of 5

We had a fantastic two weeks at the cottage. The cottage itself was excellent with all you could need and was very comfortable. The pool and gardens were great with fantastic views. The location was good for walks and for the amenities in the local town plus a great base for exploring further afield. Howard & Liz were very helpful with great tips and advice.

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Although the weather was not perfect, we had a wonderful week. Having the pool just outside the kitchen door was indeed a luxury my wife made full use of.

There were lots of good restaurants nearby and we had good meals at reasonably prices every day.

If you want to cook, the kitchen was more than adequate, and the dishwasher meant we did not even have to wash up!

The owners, in the house next door were perfect hosts, and we felt very touched to be invited to a birthday party.

We had a great, relaxing week, just what we wanted, and I hope to return!

Further Details:

There is a wealth of interest in this part of France.

12th century Crusader churches are to be found in many villages and towns. Close by is the much-loved, picturesque village of Talmont on a headland overlooking the estuary.

Near Talmont is the Moulin du Fa, a recently excavated Roman town and port, with an excellent visitor centre.

You can explore the magnificent Roman amphitheatre and other remains in Saintes, or the Medieval tower in Pons. At Blaye you can explore the huge Napoleonic citadel or take the little car ferry across the Gironde to visit the famous chateaux of the Medoc such as Lafite, Margaux and Rothschild.

Other easy day trips could include Bordeaux, St Emilion, La Rochelle or Cognac. Wine tasting (degustation) in this great wine region is to be found everywhere and many chateaux are open to visitors.

Birdwatchers will also be delighted with the many species to be found in the area, especially on the estuary, where you will see avocets, curlews, plovers, storks, egrets and many others.

Locally the shops and services in Mortagne are suitable for all your needs and you could, if you wanted, abandon your car and go everywhere on foot.

However most of our guests also use the supermarkets in nearby Gemozac (Super U and LIDL) or Cozes (Carrefour).

Cheap petrol is also sold at these places.

Mortagne has a small bank (Credit Agricole) and cash machine plus a Post Office.

There are some superb traditional food markets around the area eg.Gemozac on Fridays and Cozes on Wednesdays (and a small market in Mortagne on Thursdays and Sundays).

Local specialities include seafood (especially oysters), fish, cheeses (especially goat's cheese), pates, brioches and honey plus the products of the local vineyards such as Pineau, Cognac and many local wines.

Excellent sailing and windsurfing facilities nearby at Royan and St Georges de Didonne.

A tennis court in Mortagne is free of charge.

Horse riding is available in the village.

Facilities

From the Owner

Extracts from our guest book: "A wonderful base to explore this beautiful part of France. We have eaten very well, enjoying all your recommendations (the rest we'll have to come back again for!). We particularly liked the attractive towns of Jonzac and Pons and the trip to the Medoc." "A fantastic two weeks in a wonderful location and a gite which has everything - including excellent hosts who made us so welcome. Also Howard and Liz have fantastic local knowledge, which is so helpful. We would recommend going across to the Medoc, but do stop at Blaye and visit the Citadel - excellent. The Cote Sauvage has great beaches. Great meals at Le Cottage and La Vieille Poste. So much to do in a lovely area."
