About the Owner

I retired at Christmas 2011 after teaching in a special school in Darlington/Durham for 34 years. My hobbies are sport related, currently squash, cycling and ski-ing are my favourites. Many, many years ago it was football when I did play professionally for Leeds Utd. Darlington and Gateshead. I also love going to the Lake District and have always wanted to own a house in the Lakes and was fortunate to be able to do this 4 years ago. I have been married for 38 years to Dela who also retired at the same time she was head/chief executive of 3 schools and was made a Dame 12 years ago in the Queen's birthday honours for her services to special education.

A first class and very welcoming property

  • 5 of 5

We loved the property and Colin the owner could not have been more helpful. We stayed a couple of nights but wished it could have been longer. The property was very easy to find and located close to the M6 but far enough away from the main road to be very quiet.

Totally amazing.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Smithy House for a week. It is truly a home from home, with everything you can think of. If you do forget something don't worry because it will already be here. The owners have thought of absolutely everything. The house is mind blowing, totally stunning combining comfort with luxury. The comfort and luxury is extended into the garden with the beautiful garden furniture. The garden is an array of colourful plants and flowers which invite the most gorgeous birds and butterflies. The village is peaceful and friendly with plenty of local walks. I would recommend this holiday home to anyone. 'A' star and ten out of ten.

Smithy House

  • 5 of 5

Some of my family rented this lovely house for a few days in order to attend a family wedding in Penrith. The house was spotless when they arrived and they spend a very comfortable 4 days there. The bedrooms are beautiful with very comfortable beds and the house was easily spacious enough for 3 adult couples. The weather was kind so they were able to breakfast in the garden most mornings and enjoy an evening stroll to one of the nearby friendly pubs in the evening. They had a most enjoyable stay and would certainly book again without hesitation.

A very comfortable cottage in a beautiful location

  • 4 of 5

The owners made us feel very welcome with all the information we needed well in advance and some lovely hospitable touches such as milk in the fridge for a cup of tea on arrival and a pot of home-made jam on the table.

We only stayed the weekend as we were at nearby Greystoke Castle for a family wedding but nevertheless appreciated the setting, fitting in a scenic walk from the house and another by Ullswater only a very short drive away. Our single regret was that we had to drive back to London for work and could not stay longer.

Location

From the Owner

I have always loved the Lake District and in particular Lake Ullswater and have always wanted to enjoy holidaying there. In the past I windsurfed on Ullswater but over the past decade have loved walking and cycling in the lakes. The house is only just over an hour from my home in Darlington so whats better on a Friday evening than heading West to the Lakes. Lets hope you don't book everyweek/weekends and you leave some for myself.

Facilities

From the Owner

The house is very accessible from the A66 and M6. It's great to invite friends and family on a weekend. We usually enjoy a meal at The Brantwood Hotel or The Kings Arm pub on a Friday before doing something more energetic on a Saturday like a long walk on the fells or a cycle ride up one or two passes. The house is extremely well decorated and furnished. It is well equipped with everything you need for an enjoyable stay.
