About Colin Smith

I retired at Christmas 2011 after teaching in a special school in Darlington/Durham for 34 years. My hobbies are sport related, currently squash, cycling and ski-ing are my favourites. Many, many years ago it was football when I did play professionally for Leeds Utd. Darlington and Gateshead. I also love going to the Lake District and have always wanted to own a house in the Lakes and was fortunate to be able to do this 4 years ago. I have been married for 38 years to Dela who also retired at the same time she was head/chief executive of 3 schools and was made a Dame 12 years ago in the Queen's birthday honours for her services to special education.

Colin Smith purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Colin Smith chose England

I have always loved the Lake District and in particular Lake Ullswater and have always wanted to enjoy holidaying there. In the past I windsurfed on Ullswater but over the past decade have loved walking and cycling in the lakes. The house is only just over an hour from my home in Darlington so whats better on a Friday evening than heading West to the Lakes. Lets hope you don't book everyweek/weekends and you leave some for myself.

What makes this cottage unique

The house is very accessible from the A66 and M6. It's great to invite friends and family on a weekend. We usually enjoy a meal at The Brantwood Hotel or The Kings Arm pub on a Friday before doing something more energetic on a Saturday like a long walk on the fells or a cycle ride up one or two passes. The house is extremely well decorated and furnished. It is well equipped with everything you need for an enjoyable stay.

Notes:

The house is suitable for children and in the twin bedroom upstairs is a flat screen TV/DVD player especially for children whilst adults can enjoy themselves downstairs. New for January 2011 is unlimited free wi fi access. Outside: The garden is well established with a lawn, teak garden furniture and an abundance of birds and even the odd red squirrel. A shed at the bottom of the garden contains dry logs and 2 mountain bikes for your personal use. Between the house and the lawned area is a large patio area. This can be used for parking 2/3 cars. Utility Room: An extra electric cooker, washer/dryer, dishwasher, sink and plenty of storage space. The kitchen also has a microwave and the fridge/freezer is located in the larder next to the utility and kitchen. The utility room is very well equipped. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are included in your stay, all the linen is ironed by the cleaner and beds made up for you before your arrival.

A lovely weekend break

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time in the cottage. It is very cosy and well equipped for family stay. We were pleasantly surprised by the interior of the house with baths and shower located in bedrooms. We would definitely go back and stay there and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for peaceful and comfortable stay. Thank you very much for letting us stay in your lively house!

Well presented cottage in quite village.

  • 4 of 5

We spent a long weekend in smithy cottage, there was plenty of room for the 5 of us plus a toddler. Great location for walking and other areas are a short drive away such as pooly bridge, Keswick and Ullswater. There's also a nice pub and a hotel 2 mins walk away for a pub meal or a few drinks in the beer garden. We would definitely stay again.

Lovely cottage for our first stay in the Lake District

  • 5 of 5

A very well presented cottage with ample space for 2 couples and 2 dogs. Nice enclosed garden so we could let the dogs out without worrying about the road. Complimentary drink, homemade jam and biscuits were well received thank you. Didn't try the local pub or hotel so can't comment but bought local bacon from the shop (limited hours of opening). The local Rheged Centre was worth exploring. We loved Grannydowbekin at Pooley Bridge - amazing afternoon tea for 2 at £25. So many walks to explore that we run out of time and will certainly be returning to this beautiful part of the country.

Great place for a family to spend a weekend

  • 5 of 5

We only spent 2 nights there, but it was everything we wanted for a peaceful, relaxing break.Off-street parking helped as we had a 20-month-old child in our party, and the enclosed garden allowed her to run around safely. The house was fresh, clean and tidy when we arrived, and proved to be very comfortable for our stay. The local pub in walking distance proved useful too. We'd definitely recommend it to others.

A first class and very welcoming property

  • 5 of 5

We loved the property and Colin the owner could not have been more helpful. We stayed a couple of nights but wished it could have been longer. The property was very easy to find and located close to the M6 but far enough away from the main road to be very quiet.
