Apartment in Chapa, Nr. Amarante, Costa Verde, Portugal - Short Walk To River Beach

The two bedroom ground floor apartment has recently been renovated and is fully equipped. Outside there is a furnished terrace for alfresco meals and sunbathing, also lawns beneath shady fruit trees and vines. Chapa is a quiet rural village yet is just a few minutes drive from excellent motorways for exploring this beautiful region of Portugal. The historic market town of Amarante is just 10km distant with its many cafe-bars and restaurants to enjoy. Nearby is an 18 hole golf course, water park and indoor wave pool as well as a number of outdoor pools. Or you may prefer the natural attraction of the nearby river beach where you can swim in the cool, clean waters of the river Tâmega. Also enjoy walks or cycle rides along the newly completed ecotrail, replacing the old train route to Amarante, with spectacular views over the Tâmega vale. Free wi-fi access. The owner is at hand to help if you require and vegetarian meals can be provided on request at a reasonable price.

We spent two weeks (in Sept) in this spacious, comfortable and well equipped apartment. We enjoyed its attractive situation and the huge variety of walks we could make directly from the apartment. One walk was down to the river which flowed through really striking scenery. The views are lovely. You could take a different walk each day !

The nearest town of Amarante is only a few minutes by car. Here we found a good choice of stores for shopping, lovely cafes to visit and again beautiful riverside walks.

A little further afield.....and the roads are very good, often with wonderful views..is the ancient town of Guimaraes. Here we visited the castle, the palace museum and the old squares often walking along narrow flag- decked streets.

The fabulous city of Porto is less than an hours drive. There is so much to see there. The river, the bridges, the riverside cafes, the port cellars and the cathedral. It all lived up to our expectations!..... Jean and Doreen, Hall Green, Birmingham.

Cosy and well-equipped with beautiful views

If you're looking for an hideaway from the hectic life but closed to the beauty of nature, this apartment is perfect for you. I stayed here for 5 days with my 2 boys (ages 11 and 14 y/o ) and my husband on our Summer trip around Porto, Portugal and Galicia, Spain. This apartment is very clean and well-equipped, surrounded by the beauty of nature. It's only a short walk to River Tamega where you can swim or just hang out to cool down in the heat. My boys could spend all day just playing in the river while I can just sit around to enjoy the view around the river. Jane Bailey, the owner of this place and also her Mum are very lovely lady. she's very helpful with all the questions about the area, such as where to go for a nice meal. If you do choose to stay in this beautiful apartment, you might need a car as to go to town Amarante, it takes around 10 minutes :-)

Activity and Interests


There are many sandy beaches north and south of Porto at a distance of around 80km from the apartment. There are also a number of river beaches in the area, the closest being a 15 minute walk.


The closest airport is Oporto, (the Aeroporto Francisco Sá Carneiro), and is 73km distant. It is advisable to have a car and car hire is available at the airport. Alternatively the owner can collect guests from the airport by prior arrangement.


The nearest town of Amarante is 10km away; the city of Porto is 70km, a journey of less than an hour. The historic towns of Guimarães and Braga, and the spectacular Douro valley are also within an hours travel.

Further Details:

The village of Chapa has a local shop and various cafe-bars at a few minutes walk. There is a daily bus service to the local town of Amarante, which has regular coach services for destinations in northern Portugal. There is a biweekly market in Amarante and various good supermarkets. Nearby are a number of open air pools, a water park and indoor wave pool. Other activities include bowling and canoeing. Or you may prefer the more sedate pedal boats to experience the beautiful river views and old Amarante.
