Cottage in Le Gasquet, Valleraugue, Le Vigan, Languedoc-Roussillon - Large Shady Terrace, Orchard and Tranquillity
This is a place for people who love Nature, who would rather swim in a mountain river than a standard pool; and rather look out on grass, trees and mountains than a village street. Who prefer old stones to a modern villa. Le Four Alcaix is a traditional cottage on the sunny southern edge of the mountains of the Cevennes, at the end of a lane which then becomes a woodland track. Comfortable and friendly, its ambiance is of beams, old stone, white walls and warm quarry tiles. Yet it has everything you need for a comfortable holiday (including broadband) and the large secluded terrace that looks out over the old orchard to the Herault is only seven minutes away by car from an atmospheric small town with friendly shops. Everyone loves it.

Guestbook comments from the owner
'We had a tremendous time here: it is a magical place. We felt at home in the gite within 24 hours. Light and cool inside, everything restored with charm and elegance.'
'Nicely hidden away, but not isolated or inaccessible. Hosts welcoming, hospitable and unobtrusively 'there'. The kitchen is splendid; full of character and lots of space. An ideal area and base for a traditional French holiday.'
'Peace and tranquillity. Really loved the house. Beautiful, enchanting area.'

Rustic, well equipped cottage away from it all.
A wonderful stay in a lovely location. Sally is very welcoming and a wonderful hostess. She is always available for information or assistance but also gives complete privacy. The river is within easy walking distance through the orchard and with the old weirs provides shady safe swimming areas. .The wildlife is all around and the owls at dusk were a perfect finishing touch. Can't wait to be back in July 2016.
i am curious.....
Long time ago me and my family were camping here I believe.
In summertimes. jean Eyral lived here with his wife.
It was around 1976 and later.
We still think about these wonderful years!
Do I talk about the same place?
Activity and Interests
Mediterranean beaches are 1 1/2 hours away by car, Collioure and the Spanish border 3 hours, the French Riviera, Italy and Geneva about 5 hours. Our grid reference is:

There are a number of possible airports of which the nearest are Nimes and Montpellier (both also with TGV stations). Beziers, Caracassonne, Marseille, Perpignan and Rodez are feasible from Stansted, Luton, Gatwick, Liverpool, East Midlands, Bristol, Leeds, Edinburgh, Dublin, Cork and Bournemouth. Taking an early channel ferry, it is possible to drive here to arrive in the evening. This is an area in which you really need a car, though there are some buses. Cycling to nearby towns is possible.
Valleraugue 7 minutes. Le Vigan and Ganges 25 minutes. Montpellier and Nimes (1 1/2 hours). Millau and its viaduct 1 1/2 hours. Channel ports about 850 kms.
The countryside is nothing short of magnificent, with chestnut-covered mountains and clear swimming rivers in the valleys (swim there once, and a swimming pool - or even the sea - will never be the same again). Above the village, you climb to the alpine pastures of Mont Aigoual by beech forests and rocky streams: below are the sunny plains and good-humoured life of Languedoc. Its own country is dramatic enough, but even more striking are the bare causses - highlands of box, juniper and asphodel.

- Notes on accommodation: Hot water is included. There is full central heating, which is subject to an extra charge based on oil consumption. The two double bedrooms contain open fireplaces. Any property with stairs and stone steps and a stream and a river nearby necessitates surveillance for young children, but many have visited us without any accidents. With it's different depths, the river is more suitable than a swimming pool for teaching children to swim - and more fun. The orchard is a large space that presents few hazards so that they can run free and with roads quite far away and the nearest one not at all busy, there is hardly any danger from traffic. Outside: The two nearest swimming-places in the river are about 3 minutes walk across the old orchard (which is shared with our main house and is about a hectare) and its neighbouring meadow. There are many swimming-holes up and down the river, access to which is, of course, communal. There is a large terrace shaded by mulberry and ash trees (very necessary in the summer heat) with big double glass doors to the kitchen, a small courtyard and a sunny garden. A minute's walk sees you in woodland. Utility Room: The cellar contains an additional fridge and a freezer. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The property is meticulously cleaned at the start of the let. Bed and kitchen linen are included, along with house towels. (Beach towels are not provided). Clean bed-linen is then provided weekly. Other: The washing-machine lives in a separate alcove.
