Rural Cottage By Quenecan Forest, Nr Guerledan Lake and Pontivy

Updated: 24-Oct-2016
Rural cottage in Lanmeur, Cleguerec, nr Guerledan lake, in the heart of Brittany. Historic Pontivy nearby

Lanmeur gite is a 2 bedroom detached house which has been well furnished with modern fittings and furnishings. It has a large south and east facing garden and is set in a tranquil rural location, within 3 miles of the shops. The garden has fruit trees at the top, shrubs, flower and a covered goldfish pond. It is fenced and ideal for pets and children. There is a BBQ, sun loungers and outside dining area. From the main bedroom there are patio windows onto the garden . The house is next to the huge Quenecan forest, with its many footpaths and wildlife... there are wild boar, red squirrel and deer to be seen, especially in the evening! Dog walking is straight from the house into the forest, or leave them in the enclosed garden whilst you discover the area! The Guerledan lake is nearby with its restaurants, water sports and small beaches. You can hire pedaloes and canoes here.

The kitchen is well equipped with a fridge freezer, washing machine, microwave, cooker (and a mini oven) , coffee machine, toaster etc. Electric heating throughout, with 8kw /day included in the price, extra usage charged at standard rate out of main season. Bed linen and towels also are included.

Wifi is available, and the phone may be used for land line calls.

Extra photos of the house and local area are on the facebook page of Lanmeur Gite, or on the web site which can be found on the facilities page just before Notes!

At Pontivy, there is an indoor swimming pool, and in summer there is also anoutdoor pool, where you can swim or just relax, read and have a picnic. Pontivy also a ten pin bowling alley and soft play area.. At Mur De Bretagne they offer sports in summer, ranging from horse riding, water ski-ing , sailing, walks, archery, football, and cycling. Many of these activities are free. St Aignan has an electricity museum, which is decidedly quirky!

There are many music festivals throughout the year, often free. There areplenty of markets in the area, and often there are concerts during the market as well.. often Breton music which has strong Celtic influences. But also from other cultures. Last year there was even flamenco dance and music! The abbey de Bon Repos is nearby, next to the canal. The son et lumiere in august is an evening spectacle, with over 400 actors. There is also a sunday market here, where fresh local produce is sold, and artisan crafts. The local bar has a terrace, and on sunday they have a musician playing. The meals are good here, and reasonable. I can recommend the nice restaurants, which have good lunches (ouvrier, or workers lunch) These are around 11 euros for 2-3 courses, and often include the wine. I find people come here for various reasons. They love the peace, yet not too far from the shops and activities. Also for the outdoor living here.. eating and relaxing in the garden. And for the lovely walks, and the spectacular lake. Often with pets, as the garden is enclosed and secure. Or for bike rides along the canal. Also for a taste of french living, where the pace is decidedly slow! Some come to tour , visiting the pretty villages, and the stunning coasts to the north and south. Many come to house hunt in the area. If you would like to know more, please just ask, and come and see for yourselves. Further photos and info are available on the web site (see facilities page on this advert) or on facebook.

A 10% discount on Brittany ferries is also available, please ask for the code prior to booking.

The owner has a detached house which is by the gite. Always happy to provide the latest info on what is on, and where to go if asked. Privacy and peace can be assured.

About the Owner

I moved here in 2002, not really knowing anything about Brittany. But I immediately fell in love with the area, the culture and the people. I love the countryside, outdoor life, the pretty villages, towns and of course, I love the lake! The lake is so tranquil, with its lovely paths for walking, the restaurants and good for swimming. So I don't need to travel far for my love of water to be satisfied! I have a small dog, so it is perfect to be next to the huge forest for walks. Cycling and walking beside the canal is great, no traffic and no HILLS! I go to lots of the local car boot fairs, and there are always festivals to celebrate something, usually food! I paint, sculpt, garden, love to dance and go to the music festivals, love meeting people and eating out.

A Year in Lanmeur Gite

  • 4 of 5

We are a retired couple and had decided to spend at least a year in Brittany. We are now moving on to sample life in Spain for a while!

The Gite is very roomy with comfortable beds and a really good shower! It is clean and well decorated. The garden is lovely and totally safe for dogs, as it is well fenced. Our dachshunds have loved it here. Also, Eve is very good with animals and they have adopted her home as a second residence! She is also very knowledgeable on what's on locally and helpful if you need advice on anything French.

After living here for a year the only downside we have found is that it is very damp and cold here in the Winter months. There are electric heaters in the Gite, but these are very expensive to run and not that efficient. The Gite is lovely most of the year, just not so good then.

The area around here is very beautiful with the forest literally on the doorstep. There are lots of well signposted walking routes and cycling along the canals, if you like it flat, or roads, if you don't mind the hilly bits! There are also a multitude of events on most of the time and you are spoiled for choice. The Winter was, for us, the only time when it got really quiet and the weather is cold and wet, so not so good for outside activities. Also, during this time, there is hunting in the forest, so you need to be aware of this and plan your walks accordingly. However, there is English TV here, so that was great and we had brought lots of books, games, etc with us anyway. Eve does provide all this usually, but she had kindly made room for our personal bits and stored her things elsewhere.

The nearest supermarkets are at Clegeurec and Mur, which are about 5 miles away. There is usually an English film at the cinema in Guemene, about 13 miles away, once a week. The bar at St Brigitte is run by English people and very friendly, with a mix of French and English people. You can get milk fresh from Jean Marc at the local farm.

We have enjoyed our time here and found Brittany a joy to discover.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. Yes, it has been lovely having you here for over a year, and it is great that you are changing countries to enjoy life in spain! Looking after your dogs has given you the opportunity to take trips away knowing they are in a home from home. I am happy to help with holiday visitors too, where possible, and of course this is free of charge. Yes, winter can have damp and dull days, the temperature rarely goes below zero, but it is not very nice in January and February! The colder clear winter are preferable. Yes, the bar is very friendly, and we have the new bistro which has opened this summer in cleguerec. It serves food all day, which is a bonus. The electric heating worked out at around 60 euros for the coldest month, and there was a gas heater cost of about 70 euros for the year. The main holiday season the electrics don't usually cost anything as heating is unnecessary. In colder months the weekly rental is cheaper, with a daily usage allowance included in the price, but there will likely be a charge, at cost, in colder months. I am hoping to get a pellet burner installed in autumn, which will still cost out of the main season, but will offer a choice of heating. Thank you for visiting brittany, and for staying in my gite. And all good wishes for your next adventure!

Nice house in the country

  • 4 of 5

The house was bigger than expected - especialy the double bedroom and equipt with everything you'd need and want for a week in the country - table tennis equipment, tennis rackets, fire pit and bbq - just ashame it rained so much we had limited chance to use it all. That being said there were plenty of books, cds and sky tv to keep us entertained.

The property was difficult to find, but Eve gave us detailed instructions and helped us find our way there! The house was well maintained, clean and tidy and we had a nice bottle of wine on arrival :) The garden was a little untidy, but that was more down to the storm than anything else and was a great sun trap when the sun came out.

Eve was great at finding local festivals, concerts and things to do and really helpful if we had any problems. She's really knowledgable about the local area and has lots of great tips!

The surrounding area is beautiful and there is so much to see and do - even if the lake is drained, it's well worth a walk along the buttom of the lake just to see what's there, but do your research before you go as a lot of local businesses are closed over summer as they go on holiday, they don't open at usual times and don't always follow what they advertised on the tourist brochure! Oh, and if you head to the beach head to Carnac - the tourist office in Clegeurac directed us to Vannes and there is no beach there. Also, check out the local karting near Pontivy - that was amazing!!

Overall, an eventful week in a great location, perfect for a country get away!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments, Steph! Yes we had a wintry week in august, brrrrh!! I am pleased you enjoyed your stay. Sorry the lawn was too wet to cut. And when it was sunny it would have been a pity to disturb you! But I will ask in future if my visitors would like it cutting. I do like to keep up to date with what is on and pass on the info. Often these things are by word of mouth. Also there is often too much choice especially at weekend, so having an idea what the festivals are about is often good to know. The beaches are plentiful, and varied.. rocky , bays, miles of sand, with small ports, towns. Vannes is a nice place to visit but not the best for beaches. To the south most folk head for Guidel or Larmor Plage. The lake turned into a green valley a little over a month after they opened the lock gates. Amazing to see the transformation! But the lake is returning to normal when they close the lock gates in October. It is likely to be full of water before the end of the year. So it will be back to water sports, swimming, and lazing on the beaches there! A bientot!

Central base

  • 4 of 5

We picked Lanmeur because of its central Location. Ideal for touring in every direction. Accommodating and friendly reception with lots of useful local knowledge on tap. Sat Nav took us to the front door, (essential for the roads around).

A memorable and happy week, with everything we needed to switch off from the bustle of normal work life. Local social life is not far away and Maddison's Bar in St Brigitte is worth a visit for English and French refreshments, humour and chat.

We have been here twice, and it has been perfect for us. Right opposite forest walks as we had a small dog with us. The owner Could not be more accommodating, giving us tip on things to do and see, especially local events, such as the Sunday market at Bon Repos. The cottage has every thing we needed for our stay, and is full of guides and information.

Close to plenty of amenities, shops and restuarants, but very peaceful and quiet which is how we like it

Beautiful countryside, with easy access to plent of walks, in clouding canal walks.

We will return.

Relaxing and Pet friendly

  • 4 of 5

Location: Central Brittany, woods, lakes, rivers and access to the coasts.(about one and a half hours drive to Morbihan, Finisterre and the Emerald coast) Amenities/attractions: Local-Charming floral villages, walking, cycling, sailing in the lakes, swimming, markets. If you like a quiet place and outdoor activities this is for you. You will need a car. Welcome: Very friendly to both people and pets. A large well enclosed garden and walks in the adjacent forest is ideal for high energy pets. I stayed for a whole glorious summer in this gite. The location is outstanding, similar to Highland Perthshire but with better weather. The locals are very friendly and keen to incorporate you into Breton culture. This is an ideal location to explore the whole of Brittany with its scenery, beaches , rolling hills, culture, walled towns etc. If you like Celtic music you will love the many fetes (with music, dancing and crepes) Visit the InterCeltic held every year in Lorient in July? BUT no need to do anything but relax in the large, pretty garden with a glass of chilled wine. The gite bedrooms are on the ground floor so cool for a good night's sleep in summer. I would recommend this laid back gite and area for anyone who needs to chill out. If you are arriving in the evening buy in food as the local restaurants close early.

From the Owner

Approaching the house for the first time, the village of St Aignan with its flowers, pretty houses, and next to the canal, it seemed idyllic. The house itself was ideal, 2 detached properties, light filled, with the farmhouse keeping its cottage appearance, yet modern living within. It is on the hillside, with nice views across the valley. Tranquil, yet 5 minutes from the village with all its shops. The forest is huge, but you find signposted routes for cyclists or walkers. Now I live here, it is even better. I discovered the people are friendly, and the surroundings stunning. The road system is amazing, with very little traffic, and no toll roads! So it is great for exploring.
