Cottage in Caunes-Minervois, Aude, Languedoc-Roussillon, France - Peaceful Situation yet Just Five Minutes Walk From the Village Centre
Les Cyprès is a fully renovated property set in a hectare of gardens which lead down to the river Argent-Double. The house is adjacent to the owner's property but is self contained and completely separate. Caunes has a network of mediaeval streets in the centre, around the Benedictine abbey. The village is attractively situated, lying at the northern edge of the Minervois wine growing 'pays' where the land starts to rise up into the garrigue countryside (typical of the Mediterranean) and the foothills of the Montagne Noire.

About the Owner
We have been visiting the Minervois 'pays' in the Languedoc for over 20 years and living here for 17 years. Obviously we love it here! So much to see and do but also so easy to relax and wind down. As well as having the holiday cottage we also run a small plant nursery, specialising in unusual shrubs and perennials and offer occasional gardening courses. If you are a garden lover there will be lots to interest you in the gardens around les Cyprès!

'A wonderful holiday. A perfect place to switch off and wind down - we don't want to leave. The house is ideal'
'We've had a brilliant holiday, due in no small measure to the quality of the gite. The area is magnificent in it's variety of countryside. We have no doubt that we shall return'
'We have been coming to France for 25 years and we have never stayed in such a clean and well equipped gite. We craved peace, quiet and warmth and that is exactly what we got.'

We really enjoyed our holiday at Les Cypres. The house is well located just a short walk from the village centre, and there is lots to do and see in the area. We are a family of 4, with two children aged 8 and 6, and Les Cypres suited us well. It is a clean and well equipped property, with gorgeous gardens. The highlight was the pool though, which we really had for our exclusive use. Jill and Cei, the owners, rarely use the pool and didn't mind it being taken over by inflatable killer whales, boats and noisy children! Jill and Cei were very helpful to us, however only when we asked them for information - they gave us total privacy otherwise. I would highly recommend Les Cypres, and we may well return there again. A great find!
We stayed at Les Cypres this year with our two children (9 &11) and had a very enjoyable time. Gill and Cei were extremely hospitable (without intruding) and the gite and gardens are lovely. The accommodation is peaceful, wonderfully clean, well equipped and just right for exploring the surrounding area. The gardens at the property are huge (great for hide and seek!) and the pool was fabulous for cooling off after a hot day's sightseeing.
The surrounding area is stunning. Caunes Minervois is a charming village and offers a selection of bars / restaurants plus supermarket, boulangerie, cultural interest - all within a short walk of the gite. Further afield are some breathtaking medieval villages and castles, amazing scenery, plenty of sporting activities and of course Carcassonne.
We would highly recommend Les Cypres and hope to return in the future.
We had a lovely and relaxed family holiday. Plenty of sightseeing locally and a lovely pool to come back and relax in.
The house was just the right size for a family with 2 children.
Local bakery delicious and within 5 mins walk.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Les Cypres. It is a charming, simple cottage set in a lovely garden surrounded by wonderful scenery within walking distance of Caunes Minervois. The owners with whom you share the garden and pool were very helpful but discrete and there are many private areas of the garden to enjoy. You enter the cottage up a long flight of steps, so its not suitable for anyone with mobility problems.
The steps up to the gite were a bit of a surprise and initially a bit daunting but in fact caused no real problem, although because of them we tended not to take food down in to the garden to eat. The veranda was nice and cozy for the two of us.
The pool was very welcoming although a bit of shade would have pleased my wife.
Everything else was first class. Perfect you might say so it seems mean to have made any criticism. The bedrooms were very airy, comfortable and clean. The kitchen large enough to eat in and well equipped. Gill's garden was hugely impressive. There was a lot going on in Caunne and surrounding area. The Gite was very quiet yet less than a five minute walk to the centre of the lively village with all its amenities
On booking we were slightly concerned that the owners, living on site, might be intrusive but they were not at all. Always available when you needed them for advice, always friendly and never in the way. We had an excellent holiday - could have done with a month!
I would recommend this holiday to anyone. Our hosts Gill and Kai were extremely helpful and full of local knowledge, you are left well alone but we felt we could ask any questions about the area, ie shops, food, places to eat, attractions etc etc.
The village of Caunes Minervois is steeped in history and has some great places to eat. Local food is typically French and the Plat De Jour is always good. As the town is located at the foot of the black mountains you have a fantastic range of landscapes to admire and investigate, from climbing the steep hills or meandering the grape laden valleys. You could just laze around the large and very clean pool amongst the fabulous smelling jasmines and rosemary plants. The historic Carcassone is only a short drive away and the coast can be reached in an hour. The property was clean and well stocked out with all the necessary items required for self catering. We used the barbeque and ate in the well established gardens. The local wine and vineyards are a must and a short walk to a Cave in the village too. I cannot say one bad thing about our stay here and we were really annoyed not to have booked a second week! We are already looking at going back as there is so much to do (or not!) if you choose. I could make this review so long with great points about our stay here but I will end by saying that a trip here would be memorable one. Do not hesitate to book this!
From the Owner
“The village of Caunes-Minervois really does offer you the best of all worlds. Nestling under the foothills of the Montagne Noire there is easy access to the coast and to the mountains as well as Carcassonne (with flights to many regional airports in the UK). The village has shops and amenities meaning that you can forget about the car for a while if you wish.”
