About the property

Townhouse with terrace in Carcassonne, France - Excellent location, Free WiFi, furnished as a 'home from home'

Our much-loved little townhouse is perfect for couples looking to spend quality time away together in romantic and comfortable surroundings. This is our own second home which dates back to 1624 and has been sympathetically renovated to retain its original features and character. You'll find many personal touches and real personality here; luxury linens and kingsize bed, well equipped kitchen with a sunny terrace for dining, large roll top bath to relax, bathrobes and fluffy towels. We hope you'll relax, kick off your shoes and feel completely 'at home'. Then when you want to reconnect with the world again, take advantage of our free WiFi.

You'll be in a great location - situated just off the main shopping street in the historic and vibrant Bastide Saint Louis. Ideally placed for exploring, with the medieval city (la Cite), Place Carnot, Canal du Midi, the River Aude, the train station and shops all within walking distance.

There's lots to see and do but it's good to know that at the end of the day, you can relax on our sunny terrace with a glass of wine and continue to soak up the atmosphere of this charming French town.

About Shelley Andrews

Simon and I are lucky enough to be balancing two adventures - our new home and renovation project on the stunningly beautiful Isle of Wight and our second home in Carcassonne in the South of France, which captured our hearts during a summer holiday there years ago.

We're now able to welcome couples to stay in our newly available Garden Apartment here in Ventnor (OD E13567) and of course continue to visit our little house in beautiful Carcassonne (OD FR5911).

Shelley Andrews purchased this house in 2008

Why Shelley Andrews chose La Bastide Saint-Louis

We love the fact that we can load up our backpacks in the morning and after a short flight, be relaxing on our sunny terrace in the afternoon! The airport shuttle bus is almost door to door for us and our spirits always lift as we cross the bridge over the Canal du Midi and walk into the Bastide. We never tire of exploring the area and seem to find something new with each visit. I tour each of the Brocante shops looking for bits for the house but always find time to visit our nearest 'beach' - just 10 minutes away at the peaceful Lac du Cavayere, or we drive down to the sun-soaked beaches around Narbonne. Carcassonne is surrounded by vineyards as well as remnants from its Cathar past so there's plenty to explore!

What makes this house unique

We've renovated the house as a home rather than a typical rental property so there's lots of charming features that you may not find in other accommodation. The king-size bed has a luxury mattress and Egyptian cotton linens. There's a roll-top bath in the en-suite bathroom in addition to the large walk-in shower and fluffy towels - we even provide you with bathrobes to lighten your luggage. The spacious living area has lots of books and games as well as a flat screen TV to watch DVDs on, DVD player and CD/iPod docking port. There's a terrace to enjoy that glass of wine or simply look down and watch the people go about their day to day business in this delightful French town.

Ryanair flies straight to Carcassonne and if you just bring hand luggage, you can keep the costs really low!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We loved your house. The location was superb, more than that it was the cosiest haven one could imagine; decorated with taste, flair and practical style. We had a wonderful time and used your excellent facilities (wanted for nothing) cooking, reading and relaxing. You've done such a great job on this place - keep on doing what you're doing."

"Too many special memories to recount, but thank you for allowing us to share your special home and making our visit inspirational. Thanks also for all your helpful advice pre our arrival! Enjoyed and savoured every minute of our nine days!"

"Fantastic townhouse in a perfect location. We couldn't think of a better place to spend our honeymoon. Thank you for making it so special."

"We felt the warmth of your hospitality right from the moment we booked and that just continued. The house is a real credit to you and a perfect home from home."

"We would love to return! Happy memories of our first wedding anniversary in Carcassonne."

This is our 'second home' and we have invested much love and care into the renovation. We specifically rent to other couples who are looking for something with charm and character - a special place in which you can relax and spend time together in comfort. The photographs we display on our advert and website will give you an idea of what the house is like rather than showing you every cupboard and corner. We love to keep some of the details as a surprise for your arrival and always aim to exceed your expectations. If you would like any specific information about the house then of course we are always happy to provide it. And, if you are celebrating a special occasion and would like our help in planning a surprise for your partner then please do get in touch. For safety reasons we do not permit smoking anywhere in the property or on the terrace. As our home is just for couples, we do not accommodate children or pets. We have a sunny, paved terrace accessed from the living area - a rare space to have in the Bastide! Table and chairs are provided for dining / relaxing. There is parking available immediately outside the house - this is metered at certain times of day. There are also some free parking spaces about 5 minutes walk away and we can provide easy directions for finding these if you're not familiar with the area. If you prefer secure underground parking, there are several locations to choose from also within easy walking distance. You're welcome to use our washing machine, iron and ironing board, hairdryer, cool bag, beach mat and umbrella, beach towels, umbrella, shopping bags and basket, torches, sewing kit and UK / EU adapter plugs. The property is cleaned at the end of each stay and this is included in the rental price. High quality bed linen, towels, face cloths, bathrobes, tea towels, napkins etc are all provided and the laundry cost is included in your rental price. We have a large downstairs storage room where you can keep bicycles if you decide to hire them during your stay. This space is also useful for storing heavier cases if you are staying with us as part of a longer trip and have lots of luggage.

Perfect little house

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 3 nights, which wasn’t long enough by any means. Everything was perfect, from start to finish. Shelley was extremely helpful and the information left in the house, is all you need to have a fabulous stay.

The house is 5 mins walk from the station, 2 mins from Place Carnot and about a 20 mins walk to La Cite. It’s such a fantastic place to stay, the house has been beautifully renovated and has everything you need. It’s just what a perfect little house should be and in such a good location.

The Saturday market was a real treat, we bought lots of lovely things to eat and enjoyed using the kitchen, to cook them in. We were even lucky enough to use the terrace, for breakfasts, 2 mornings out of 3.

Carcassonne is magical and staying here, made it more so. We loved it all and can’t wait to come back. Thank you Shelley for sharing your beautiful little house with us.

Could Not Be Better

  • 5 of 5

The house is situated in one of the wonderful, narrow streets of Carcassonne and just around the corner from the centre of town. Extremely convenient for all amenities and for exploring the medieval city and Citadel fortress.

First inside on the ground floor level, is the laundry room with a first class washing machine, large drying rack, laundry basket and washing liquid etc. Also full operating instructions (in English👍) (thanks Shelley). This room is not decorated but no matter, its a holiday essential.

Up the stairs to the next level which contains the bedroom and bathroom. The most splendid. enormous bedroom was a real treat. The bed and furnishings were top class. Must be one of the biggest rooms we have ever had the pleasure to sleep in. The bed is so comfy, you do not want to get up in the mornings. The pillows were the most comfortable we have ever had and make for a superb nights sleep. There are shutters on the large windows, so you can darken down the room completely. The bathroom leads off the bedroom. Again, it is massive and with a choice of free standing bath with Flexi-shower head or a large shower with fixed head shower. The room has a heated towel rail and two sumptuous bath robes supplied. A courtesy basket of toiletries has been thoughtfully left.

Up another flight of stairs to the main living area and kitchen. A dream of a living space with two large sofas and large breakfast bar. Full WiFi and a TV/DVD player. Leading off to the front of the house is a superb, little, balcony with a seating area.

The kitchen area has everything you could possibly want. It has a two sink fitting and all washing-up / kitchen products have been considerately provided. No need to bring anything because it has all been supplied. All the usual appliances are there and some teabags in a caddy and milk in the fridge to start you off. There are cleaning products and tools in the cupboard. I cannot think of anything that has been missed and we certainly did not need to buy anything additional.

The nearest supermarket is only a few minutes away, around the corner. There are shops, bistros and a market square to enjoy but not too busy or bustling either. A Must is a visit to the Citadel, about 10 minutes walk away.

Throughout our booking process the communications from Shelley were first class and professional in every way. We were always 100% sure that we were being looked after and considered. Nothing was too much trouble. Excellent.

Just lovely

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure to stay in this delightful house in Carcassonne for one week. Despite there not being many photos of the house before our stay I was confident that Shelly's description would not let us down and I was right. Photos would not do it justice, it has to be seen to be believed. It is described in the literature as a home from home and it was always a pleasure to come back to. Shelley has thought very carefully about what guests would like/need and there are many little extras that made our time there very comfortable. It is in a central location for everything, the station, the canal and The Cite but was still quiet at night. The tourist office is excellent and would also recommend the market on Saturday morning and the bike hire. Thank you Shelley and Simon, and also Fiona who presents the house beautifully.

Comfortable accommodation with character in the heart of Carcassonne

  • 5 of 5

The property is very conveniently located in a quiet residential area but within easy walking distance of shops, bus stops and the train station. It is beautifully decorated, with sensitivity to the character of the building, and thoughtfully equipped to meet guests' needs. The kitchen-living room is on the upper floor, two flights up, and its balcony overlooks a residential street. Shelley and Simon are superb hosts, providing comprehensive and friendly information before and during our visit.

A comfortable home from home in the historic heart of Carcassonne

  • 5 of 5

The property was very easy to find and very convenient for the shops, the railway station and the local attractions. Shelley and Simon have decorated it beautifully and have thought of everything their guests might need to enjoy their stay.

We also found Carcassonne an excellent centre for visiting other places, we particularly enjoyed our day out on the train to Narbonne. Many thanks to Shelley also for the very comprehensive information we received before we left for France.

Car: not necessary

Ask someone to imagine a French marketplace and they'll probably conjure up images of bright awnings, colourful fruit, vegetables, flowers, breads, cheeses and pates of all description. The thrice weekly market held in Place Carnot, Carcassonne is one of the best we've seen and a true feast for the senses. Relax with a coffee and pastry at Bar Felix and people-watch the morning away!

Place Carnot is a two minute walk from the house and you'll find many great restaurants, shops and facilities here too including banks, chemist, patisseries and chocolatiers. There's also a covered market just a few streets past the square, selling fresh fish, meat and pate. With all of the tempting boulangerie nearby, you'll be spoilt for choice on where to buy your fresh, warm croissants in the mornings!

The Canal du Midi is also just a five minute walk away. You can hire bicycles locally (we have space for you to store them), walk, take a boat along the waterway or just relax on a bench and watch the boats go by. A ten minute stroll in the other direction will bring you alongside the River Aude, cool water perfect for dipping hot feet into! There are lovely walks along this route, including the lesser-known path up to la Cite.

The tranquil Lac du Cavayere is located in the beautiful hills surrounding the town and combines a sandy beach with water sports, walking, tree-based activities (climbing, zip-lines etc) as well as relaxing walks and swimming. You can cycle there, take a bus, drive there in ten minutes or walk there in about an hour and a half.

Carcassonne always seems to have activities organised for its residents and visitors throughout the year, making it a great destination whatever the season. Spring brings Jazz Week, a must for any jazz enthusiast.

In Summer it's the 'Festival of two towns'; a series of musical events featuring pop, rock, opera, dance, theatre, French and international music - many of the performances are free.

The date in everyone's diary is July 14th, when at 10.30pm, the skies above la Cite are set ablaze with an amazing fireworks spectacular lasting over 25 minutes, it's an incredible display and reputed to be one of the best in Europe.

Then, during the last week of August, it's the turn of 'Spanish Week' when shows, events, concerts, dance performances, and gastronomic specialities combine to make a great party atmosphere.

We love Christmas in Carcassonne when the town is transformed into a winter wonderland with ice-skating rink, festive market, big wheel and rides, toboggan run and a fireworks display. You'll find the location of our house very convenient for all of these events and more.

Getting here is easy with Carcassonne's airport less than a ten minute drive from the centre of town. The airport shuttle bus meets each flight (5 Euros per person) and will drop you at the train station (Gare SNCF) - just a few minutes walk from the house. If you fly to Toulouse or Beziers then you can catch a direct train to Carcassonne.

Carcassonne is surrounded by vineyards but you don't have to miss out on wine tasting if you're travelling without a car. You could join one of the excellent local tours we recommend or walk to one of the 'caves' here in town. You will need a car or to join a small tour group if you'd like to visit the Cathar sites such as Montsegur, Lastours, Queribus, Peyrepertuse and Puilaurens,

The beaches along the south coast are a 45 minute drive away. Head to Narbonne and turn right to explore the coastline towards Perpignan and Spain or left towards Montpellier and the Cote d'Azur.

There's so much to do in this beautiful and impressive region and we hope you love it as much as we do.
