About the property

Independent 2 bedroom cottage with magnificent outlook across the Douro valley

The vineyard with its winery provides the context for a quiet stay in rural calm and also as a springboard to explore the magnificent Douro valley. The city of Porto is reached in a couple of hours by train from nearby Regua.

The cottage is equipped and furnished for self catering holidays. Accommodation comprises living/dining room, traditional kitchen and upstairs one double bedroom, one twin bedroom and bathroom. Outside there are sitting and eating areas; and space for parking.

Visitors are welcome to walk within the estate and there are opportunities for longer walks in the vicinity. According to the season, visitors may join in the work of the estate. Dogs, donkeys and sheep share the landscape.

About Maria Foy

I am Portuguese, married to a British man; between us we have travelled much of the world and now share time between the work of the grapes and other fruit on the estate in the Douro valley, and England. Brought up in the Douro, this small estate was a family inheritance, but one which needed almost complete renovation; and we have spent the years since achieving this. The cottages and the winery were renewed as was the vineyard itself. The estate produces a fine Douro table wine: TERRUS.

Why Maria Foy chose Barrô

For the beauty of the setting . It is a "locus amoenus" with a general feeling of peace and well being, private without being isolated, on a corner of this great wine region. The area, being the place where I spent my childhood, is very special to me.

What makes this cottage unique

Location and views, the combination of nature, water and the wonderful light.

We have added some animals to the farm: 2 donkeys, 1 goats, 2 sheep and 2 dogs. They inhabit the place, feed on weeds and return it in manure. The donkeys do a little work too and we love them!

We did have a nice time staying at your place in Regua. It was so nice to have someone pick us up from the train station and drop us of right at the cottage. Your nephew speaks English very well and it was a pleasure to have him, with his brother, show us your wine cellar and their wine operation.



Maria greeted us so warmly and was very patient as we struggled through our French. She regularly checked in twice a day (when she fed the dogs) to make sure we had everything we needed.

The cottage itself is beautiful; being stone and timber the style could not have suited us better. It is so brave to put such care into a property that needed so much work. Your approach to the restoration reflects how much you must care about the property and the amount of work did not go unnoticed by us. I think it is great that you are willing to share your place with people and I know they will enjoy it. Kandace from Canada

A lovely place

Five of us, including an 18 month old, rented Casa da Eva for a week in March. The weather was wonderful and we did some lovely walks, through the estate, along the river Duoru and up into the hills to some wind turbines. All the walks had magnificent views of the Duoru valley.

The house itself was great. We arrived to find a large basket of fresh oranges from the estate and during our time there we picked more, along with grapefruits and lemons. There was a bottle of the estate wine waiting our arrival, along with olive oil and fresh bread, plus home made jams and other essentials.

Maria was very welcoming and invited us all round for supper one evening where we met her brother and nephew and ate traditional portugese food.

The 'drive' to the house would not be for the faint hearted but we became used to it. A car was essential as there are no shops within walking distance and, out of season, nowhere to eat out. The two dogs, whose kennels and run were next to the house, were well behaved and friendly despite towering over the 18 month old - they're large Rhodesian Ridgebacks! But all in all it was an excellent holiday.

Panoramique sur le Douro

Idéalement situé dans la vallée, paysage magnifique. Charmant chalet en pierre bien équipé, disposant d'une superbe terrasse avec sa table et ses bancs en granit. Amoureux de pierres et de nature, c'est parfait. Maria, la propriétaire, est discrète, mais charmante. Très bel endroit.

Good destination for Romanesque church lovers. Other periods well represented nearby. There is some public transport - infrequent buses which stop 500m away and taxis that can be booked by phone. A car is recommended. This is a hilly area.

Coast/Beach:

River beach with very good public swimming pool at Porto de Rei, about 5km distance. Distance to sea 100km, 2 hours by car or train.

Travel:

Porto (Oporto) is nearest airport at 100km distance, 2 hours journey duration. Train station at Régua, 10km, on the railway between Porto and Pocinho. Infrequent bus lines to and from Régua and Lamego. Taxi always available. Car not essential but highly recommended. Cyclists welcome, but it is a very hilly area and you will need to bring your own bicycle.

Distances:

100km to Porto, second Portuguese town, 2 hours by historical and scenic train line, inexpensive and environmentally friendly. 30km to Vila Real: Casa de Mateus, shopping centre. 15km to Lamego: art, architecture, museum, traditional shops, atmosphere, pastry shops and supermarkets. 10km to Régua: gastronomy, wine trade, Douro Museum and train station. 15km to Resende, a small town and the center of cherry production.

Further Details:

There are good, big and heated public swimming pools in all small towns, Lamego particularly recommended. There are plenty of restaurants in Régua. It is possible to order in advance simple meals in the local cafe. Car rental agents in Régua and banks in Régua, Lamego and Resende.
