About Catherine Nolan

Our plan is to move to Le Dorat permanently when we retire but in the meantime we are happy for our holiday home to be enjoyed by holidaymakers and visitors to the town. Currently living and working in the Middle East, we visit Le Dorat several times a year to unwind, soak up the relaxing atmosphere of rural France and enjoy good food & fine wines in a pleasant climate.

Our aim always is to make our guests feel welcome, relaxed and comfortable. Some of our guests, from as far afield as Australia, have now become good friends and we have had lots of return bookings.

We are constantly upgrading and making improvements.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The cottage has been returned to holiday rentals following a successful long lease of 18 months. Unfortunately we have no (recent) guest comments to post at the moment but previously we have enjoyed many compliments.

There are lake beaches - St Pardoux and Vassiviere- nearby, with water sports available. Le lac de Saint-Pardoux, J25 A20, north of Limoges has 3 sandy beaches: Santrop - the main beach, big and busy, with a big playground/ Chabannes – quieter, nice picnic spots/ Fréaudour – for water-sports.

La Rochelle is the nearest coastal resort and in our opinion well worth a visit if you have time. Although approximately 2 hrs 30 mins drive, you can enjoy a full day to include the historic sights an

Limoges airport is only 40 minutes drive away, and Ryanair provide a scheduled service all year round from several locations in the UK (London Stansted: East Midlands: Liverpool) and during the summer months also from Leeds/Bradford. Flybe also operate from Southampton. By car, Le Dorat is located within easy reach of the A20 motorway between Paris and Toulouse (and on to Spain). By train, the TGV service from Paris to Poitiers connects by local train to Le Dorat.

Lac de Saint-Pardoux 30 mins drive. Limoges City 40 minutes drive. Poitiers one hour's drive. Roumazières-Loubert (velo rail) - one hour, 20 minutes drive. Paris 3.5 hours. Calais 6 hours.

Further Details:

Le Dorat has a number of good restaurants in the town as well as several cafe/bars/bistros, some with wi-fi, where you can sit inside or out and enjoy a leisurely lunch. There are several annual equestrian events held in Le Dorat during June, July & August and a National Horse show jumping competition is held during September.

Worth a visit is the picturesque book lovers' town of Montmorillon, "Village of Writers" which is 30 minutes' drive. Further afield the scenic lakes of Le lac de Saint-Pardoux and Le lac de Vassiviere, with sandy beaches, water sports, fishing and beautiful walks. Horse riding, walking, cycling, and fishing are particularly popular in the area. Please note a daily or weekly fishing licence may be required.

Places of historical interest nearby include Oradour sur Glane, a martyr village that has been left as it was since 1944 after being destroyed by the Nazis.

Many historical chateaux and churches can be found in the area, including the pretty 13th century chateau at Rochechouart, with its museum of modern art both indoors and out.

The city of Limoges, famous for its fine porcelain and china ware since 1770s offers a magnificent 13th century Gothic cathedral in the old quarter with its narrow streets and half-timbered houses. Also worth a visit, the Aquarium du Limousin in Limoges, Reynou zoo in Le Vigen, south of Limoges, La Vallee des Singes (Monkey Sanctuary) and Les Loups Des Chabrieres (wolf sanctuary) near the Guéret Forest.

Futuroscope, on the outskirts of Poitiers, offers an innovative theme park, one of the best parks in France.
