The property briefly comprises of: fully fitted kitche/diner. Downstairs bathroom. Lounge with multi fuel wood burning stove, double sofa bed and arm chair. Flat screen TV, wi-fi, DVD player, cd player, ipod docker and radio. Upstairs double bedroom with pine furniture. lawned garden with views of the dale, table, chairs and BBQ. gravelled front garden with rotary clothes dryer. Private parking for 1-i2 cars. Quality fixtures and fittings throughout. The garden is not fully enclosed. Two well behaved dogs are welcome and are charged at £5 per night per dog. Bed linen and towels are included in the price. The access to the property is via a public bridleway and is approximately half a mile from the village.

We are a hard working couple originally from West Yorkshire, now living the dream in the stunning Yorkshire Dales.

When we converted the cottage our aim was to provide high quality, affordable accomodation. Cleanliness, quality and value for money are very important to us and we think this is reflected in Owl Cottage.

Cosy, comfy cottage in outstanding location

We enjoyed a peaceful few days at Owl Cottage. It's very well equipped with every thing you need at hand. The location is stunning, it is half a mile down a farm track (our Peugeot 306 coped fine!) but that just adds to its appeal. Lots of pubs within walking distance that allow dogs and we were blessed with some fantastic weather. The owners are great and made sure we had what we needed. The only downside for us was that despite the cottage having wifi available we struggled to get any most of the time we were there, as this is one of our must haves it was annoying, this was not however the owners fault and I'm sure down to the location and area. Thank you for letting us stay!

We have only experienced this once before and it turned out that the guest had typed a wrong character in the password so was unable to log on! We resolved the problem and it was fine after that. I can honestly say we have no problems whatsoever with our internet, in fact we couldn't cope without it ourselves and although super fast broadband is only just arriving in the Dales, ours is more than adequate. Cosy little bolthole

The cottage is in a great location, superb for a restful break and the owners have gone to great lengths to ensure everything is provided. We were made to feel very welcome and so was our dog. One slight irritation - entirely outside the control of the cottage's owners - the local pub in Thoralby was closed for meals during the duration of our stay. Having a nearby pub is one of my key criteria when choosing where to stay.

How disappointing the pub was closed during your stay, i'm sorry to hear that and hope you found somewhere suitable. The landlord of The George has been unwell I know and recently had a pace maker fitted so it could be the reason why he was closed - i'm not sure. For future reference, there are many other lovely pubs and restaurants around the Dales that serve excellent food. The nearest to the cottage besides Thoralby are in Aysgarth, Bishopdale and West Burton Villages. Thanks again for your review and look forward to seeing you again. Jeannette.

Perfect cottage in perfect location

Gorgeous, spacious, open and spotless. Located in middle of countryside up a bridle way away from it all but a short walk into the village. Can't recommend enough. Lots of lovely little extras. Perfect for a getaway. Stayed in lots of lovely cottages but this is first that has got me writing a review. Book it. You won't regret it. Thanks for a lovely weekend.

Perfect stay in the Yorkshire Dales

Our stay in Owl Cottage could not have been more perfect. The house was perfectly appointed, with everything we needed. The field guides, maps, trail details and other resources were invaluable, and we felt very equipped to explore a wide area on foot. Peaceful, quiet and absolutely perfect. Stay at Owl Cottage

Lovely cottage set in stunning surroundings. Jeannette was determined to ensure we had a great time.

Very convenient for walking as many paths accessible from the front door. Pick up a bus from the village centre (10 minutes walk from cottage) and walk back across the moors. Do visit Ayesgarth Falls and the George and Dragon.

Will definitely be back in the Dales soon.

Relaxing and homely

We found previous reviews very useful, and accurate. Loved the gated bridleway up to the cottage, though the car didn't much! The location was quiet and peaceful, and we got the privacy we wanted,Jeanette knocked to make sure we had everything we needed, and was on hand if necessary.

The cottage was well maintained and tastefully decorated with all the necessary facilities, we especially loved the wood burner.

Reading the visitors book, previous guests mentioned a welcome pack, which would have been nice, although we came prepared with our own tea, coffee etc. Some liquid soap in the bathroom would have been 'handy', as we didn't think to bring any.

We were looking forward to visiting The George Inn, but it seemed to be closed for the week we were there!

Overall very homely and comfortable, we hope to return sometime.

Owner's Response: Thank you for reviewing your stay with us and for your lovely comment in the visitors book. As we pride ourselves on providing the best possible service, i'd just like to respond to a couple of the points you have raised for the benefit of all of our guests. The access to the cottage is via a farm track and care must be taken in low bottom cars as stated in the property description. I'm not sure what make of car you had but we have never had any problems reported to us from any of our previous guests. The visitors book is full of fantastic comments from our guests and its disappointing that you have highlighted that we no longer provide a welcome pack. The reason for this is that when we installed the log burner, we took the decision to provide free logs for the fire (most charge) and as we didn't want to increase our prices, we chose to discontinue the welcome pack. This was over three years ago and is not a recent change. The cottage is fully equipped with everything you need for your holiday including non standard items - torches, umbrellas etc. As the cottage is self catering we are not obliged to provide toiletries but as you are aware we provide most things including toilet rolls, washing up liquid, cleaning materials, free of charge for our guests comfort and convenience. I apologise that there was no liquid soap available and will ensure this is provided in future. I note your comment regarding The George Inn. The owners do have a policy of closing at lunchtime during the quieter winter months but to my knowledge it was open in the evenings as usual. Location

From the Owner

We discovered how beautiful Wensleydale was in 2005 when we bought a static caravan to use as a bolt hole. We completely fell in love with the place and spent our weekends walking the dogs through the most amazing scenery and enjoying the fantastic local food and drink. In 2007 we stumbled across an old farmhouse that was for sale but in need of major renovation and a huge amount of TLC. We took the plunge and bought the property and have never once looked back. The area is simply stunning and there is so much to see and do. With the renovations now complete and the cottage ready for guests, it is now time for us to enjoy this most wonderful, relaxing way of life.

Special interest holidays:

The cottage affords fantastic walking directly from the doorstep with the magnificent triple flight Aysgarth Falls approximately one mile away. The cottage makes a perfect base for walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders with walks for any age or ability.

Travel:

A car is preferred due to the location and care needs to be taken on the access track to the property (which is not owned by us). Please note: Horses and sheep sometimes graze on the track which is a public bridleway.

Distances:

Thoralby is the nearest village approximately 1/8 mile down the track. The village has a good pub, The George Inn, which serves local ales and good food. The Street Head Inn,Bishopdale is approx 1 mile away as are The George and Dragon, and The Aysgarth Falls Hotel. There is a small post office/village store in Thoralby and nearby West Burton. Leyburn is approximately 8 miles away as is Hawes, where you will find supermarkets, banks, butchers and other local shops.

Further Details:

There are many wonderful places to visit nearby, the market towns of Leyburn and Hawes can easily be accessed by car with attractions such as the Wensleydale Creamery, Dales Museum and Wensleydale Railway to experience. Other local attractions include the Forbidden Corner, Bolton Castle, Middleham, Hardraw waterfalls to name a few.

The award winning fish restaurant, The Wensleydale Heifer is 15 mins drive and there are many other excellent restaurants in the area.

Booking Notes:
The availability calender is always kept up to date and the prices are as stated on the website. We require a non refundable deposit of £100 at the time of booking, with the balance paid 45 days before the holiday start date. We also require a damage deposit of £50.00 for all bookings.

Pets are charged at £5.00 per night per dog (maximum 2 well behaved dogs allowed)

Bed linen and towels are included for all stays of 7 nights or more. For short breaks, guests can either bring own bed linen and towels or hire from us at £20 per set.

We recommend you take out holiday cancellation insurance.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is usually Saturday but we will try and fit in with you. The property will be available from 3pm on the day of arrival and must be vacated by 11.00am to allow for thorough cleaning and preparation for the next guests.

Notes on prices:
Short breaks are available minimum stay is 3 nights. Friday, Saturday, Sunday rate is £100 per night and Monday - Thursday rate is £75 per night.

Owl Cottage is situated approx half a mile from the village so has the benefit of feeling slightly remote but by no means isolated - the best of both worlds would be how I would describe it. It is a 10 - 15 minute stroll down the farm access track to the village where you will find the shop and the local pub which serves real ales and great food. We are surrounded by beautiful scenery which is perfect for those who love walking or mountain biking. There are numerous places to visit nearby including the wonderful triple flight Aysgarth Falls, Bolton Castle and the quaint market towns of Hawes and Leyburn. Perhaps you just like to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet whilst taking in the beautiful scenery. If you really do want to 'get away from it all' then this is the place to do so

  • Notes on accommodation: The property is strictly non smoking. Free wi-fi is available via BT Broadband however, as we are in the countryside, the speed may differ to what you are used to. We have received fantastic reviews from all of our guests and it is the perfect place to simply relax and unwind whilst enjoying the wonderful scenery. Should you wish to explore the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, you will find that this is the perfect base to do so. Outside: The property enjoys its own lawned garden with comfortable patio furniture and BBQ. To the front of the cottage there is a gravelled garden area complete with rotary clothes dryer. Dog Owners please note: the garden is not fully enclosed. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and are not allowed to roam free in either the garden or surrounding area of the cottage. There is a private parking for 1 -2 cars. The cottage is surrounded by our own land and we are lucky enough to see Owls, deer and even badgers on a regular basis. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The cottage is thoroughly cleaned and prepared for your arrival. All electric, heating, duvets and pillows are included in the price. Bed linen is provided for bookings of 7 nights or more. For short breaks bed sets are available to hire at £20 per set. Other: The lounge has a multi fuel stove and all rooms have oil fired central heating. A good selection of CDs, DVDs books, games, ordnance survey map and maps of local walks are provided.
