About James Munnery

Casa do Ananas is the long time dream of husband and wife Edna and James. We bought the land 15 years ago and have spent the time since seeking development consent and getting the design just right to satisfy ourselves (and the planners).

Edna was born on the island and, whilst we now live in the UK, she remains at heart an Acorean. The whole island is really one extended family and our times on Pico are always fully of family fun. This project is intended to provide a retreat for our family but also to pay for itself by being rented out.

Acoreans are very welcoming and our family on the island will make every effort to ensure that our guests return to their homes far afield with fond memories and strong recommendations.

We do hope to attract people who want to see the real Acores.

James Munnery purchased this villa in 2009

Why James Munnery chose Portugal

We completed the property in 2009. The land was purchased in 2001.

Edna was born on the island so there was only ever going to be one location for our place abroad!

We spent 5 months looking for the right location; just the right blend of, views, proximity to the sea, remoteness and proximity to Lajes for the convenience of shops, restaurants and bars.

What makes this villa unique

The Acores, and in particular Pico, are unspoilt. We often hear people remarking about how laid back the lifestyle is.

I love swimming off the coast looking at all the fish and maritime life which abounds. On rough days the swimming pool has to suffice; a tough life.

Our family includes Jack aged 7. He loves the water and we often spend a late afternoon fishing for crabs and small fish in the rock pools.

For us it was important that a restaurant and bar were within easy walking distance. We go to Pico to relax. The first few days are spent unwinding and unpacking.

Many of our guests report seeing dolphins and the occasional whale playing in the bay in front of the house. As i get terribly sea sick this is as close to whale watching as can get!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a really good stay at Casa do Ananas, the location is fantastic and house very comfortable. Also great service and hospitality from your sister in law, Nelia. The island Pico is fantastic and people on the island so friendly and helpful. Mr Gamble, 30 July 2011.

Your villa was perfect and importantly felt clean - I often spend the 1st hour cleaning worktops and dishes when we first arrive somewhere but didn't feel I had to at yours, we loved our week and had great weather. You're right, the pool area is a suntrap and I swam in the pool every day, we also went whale watching and 2 of us (not me!) climbed Pico - we also managed to watch dolphins from the poolside view. All in all we were delighted with our holiday - were sorry we had to leave and are now considering how we can do it all again.

A stunning house and great location

  • 5 of 5

The house is beautiful, every facility you could wish for, modern and very comfortable. The pool and sun terrace area is great. Such a relaxing holiday with lovely walks. A great restaurant at the hotel just 500 metres up the road. We would love to return in the near future.

Many thanks to James and Edna

Amazing accommodation on an amazing Island

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful villa, we were looking forward to staying here after seeing the pictures on Owners Direct and we were not disappointed. The lizards, the bat show and the calls of the Cory's Shearwater birds are all the entertainment that you require.

The weather was kind to us, so we made use of the swimming pool - my advice would be commit and dive in, it's great once you are in there. We would recommend the drive up to Mt. Pico by taking the road between Lajes and Sao Roque (R2-2), then taking a left on the R3-2. The roads might be a bit rough and ready in places, but the small hire car we had, coped very well.

We would also highly recommend Espaco Talassa fpr a whale watching trip. We were extremely luck to see, Humpback, Fin, Sperm and even a Blue whale along with Dolphins all within a 3 hour trip - It was breathtaking to see.

All in all, if you after peace and quite, a terrific climate (not too hot, not too cold), fantastic views of nature at it's finest, combined with 5 star private accommodation, Casa Ananas is the perfect place.

Impressive location & beautifully appointed villa

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week on this lovely volcanic island. The villa is every bit as stunning as it sounds. Clean, well maintained, impressive in every way. Beautiful grounds on the edge of the ocean, falling asleep to the sound of the waves and the Cory shearwaters. We used the pool, the outdoor kitchen and its BBQ and wood fired oven. Everyone we spoke to on the island was delightfully friendly and helpful and the place is unspoilt and not 'touristy', which was ideal for us. We celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary in style, whale watching being the main reason for our trip.

Espaco Talassa the original whale watching company in Lajes really delivered and was an amazing experience without having to travel outside Europe!

If you want a holiday with a difference, as we did, no large shopping centres, chain resteraunts or theme parks, then go to Pico and stay at Casa do Ananas. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Amazing place of azorian adventure

  • 5 of 5

My parents and I landed on the 9th May and made our way to this amazing property. It was somewhere my parents had been lucky enough to stay in before and although I had visited the island 16year previous, I hadn't stayed in somewhere so exclusive or in such a lovely location.

The house is amazing and there is nothing you could want for.

The island is full of adventure - climbing the mountain which I did 16years ago and did again on this trip - it is a good climb just be careful on the return down the mountain. The views from the cafe/bar at the foot of the mountain are amazing on a clear day.

Whale watching is great. On my visit we saw Fin, Sperm and Blue Whales and Common Dolphins - this was all on one 3 hour trip.

The cafe in Lajes is lovely too - and very reasonable for lunch or just a coffee.

Lastly the people are sooooooo friendly and couldn't do enough for you. I will be visiting again I am sure.

Thanks James and Edna for building such a great place to stay.

The best place to stay in Pico

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at the Casa Do Ananas. We were told by locals that this was the best place to stay in Pico and really was. The house is beautifully presented throughout and you want to spend time there because it is so relaxing and comfortable to stay in. We had a warm welcome and the neighbours were very friendly. The house is very close to the coast and we were able to see for dolphins from the veranda (which we saw regularly, when we knew what we were looking for). The beaches in Pico aren’t really that appealing and it was definitely worth having a house with a pool. The house is located near the charming village of Lajes do Pico where you can go dolphin and whale watching. There is a supermarket on the outskirts of the village. Our one disappointment of our time in Pico was that we didn’t climb Mount Pico because the day we choose the weather was too bad – but it is a great excuse to come back to Casa Do Ananas!

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: Please advise if a cot or high chair is required. No additional charge is made. Outside: The property enjoys a generous sized plot overlooking the sea. It is named 'Casa do Ananas' as the land was originally used as a Pineapple plantation. The local varietal of Pineapple, introduced from Brazil by traders in the 16th Century on route home, remain unhybridized. The relatively small size of the fruit and the large ferocious leaves are testament to this originality! The pool, although unheated, has been specially insulated and is located in a sun-trap. Local stone, materials and labour were used wherever possible. 32 celcius is an average temperature in the summer. Paul Griffiths was consultant designer of the gardens. Paul has worked previously on Gardeners World, Chelsea Flower Show and 'The Urban Garden Show'. The project was challenging not least because of the levels involved. The fantastic plant resource on the island was used as a basis for the planting however it did become necessary to bring in new ideas and species from the mainland. Utility Room: A separate Laundry Room is provided with washing machine, tumble dryer and iron facilities. Laundry services can be arranged upon request. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are included and changed once a week. Maid service, cook, baby sitter are available on request. The owners family are local and will make any arrangements to make your stay extra special. Other: Please ask about car hire and for any advice on how to get to Pico.
