About May Hermans

I am from The Netherlands and moved to London, England, where I live with my husband and stepchildren. I love London where both my husband and I work, but also look forward to spending our holidays on the continent; especially in the area where I come from! Of course to visit my large family, but also because I enjoy this most beautiful and friendly part of Holland which is so centrally located in The Netherlands and is also so accessibly for venturing into nearby Germany and Belgium. I love experiencing the different cultures- all within a stone's throw away from The Joffers' House! Both my husband and I wish you a wonderful and inspiring stay in this most versatile area, but also in delightful Joffers' House; your fantastic base from which to explore all this, but also to return to...

May Hermans purchased this house in 2004

Why May Hermans chose Broekhuizenvorst

We love this area! Limburg is Netherlands' most Southern and versatile Province- it is centrally located and offers a fantastic combination of spectacular nature (wonderful walking- and cycling routes), and plenty interesting day-outings: touristic, cultural and historical ones such as the local festivals (Rose, Asparagus, Blueberry, Bike and Music Festivals), the atmospheric outdoor markets in various villages and towns. There are also plenty of interesting museums such as the WWII museum in Overloon and the Limburg's Museum in Venlo. The Roman cities of Nijmegen and Maastricht are just 60 min's car drive away from the Joffers' House, and the nearby German and Belgium borders offer day-outings to the vibrant cities such as Dusseldorf, the pilgrimage town Kevelaer (cakes!), and beautiful Aachen. In Belgium the historical towns like Liege, Maaseik and Tongeren are within easy reach.

And... of course the Limburgers are known for their Burgundian lifestyle- plenty of wonderful restaurants, casual or smart, the el fresco terraces along the river Maas that serve during all seasons the locally grown products- not to forget Limburg's own beer from the local Hertog Jan Beer Brewery!

What makes this house unique

The Joffers is situated in the heart of the Dutch Rose-and Asparagus Culture. In the summer you'll find endless cycling and walking routes that lead you to beautiful fields blooming with colourful roses; a must to see! or cycle along the river Maas and through picturesque villages with medieval castles and monasteries that lay dotted along this beautiful river.

There are fantastic boat-tripson the Maas, plenty of lakes for water sports and swimming, but also 3 golf courses, horse riding and as previosuly mentioned beautiful and well signed walking-and cycling routes.

The Thermal Bath and Beauty Center in Arcen with hot mineral waters, plenty local festivals and weekly markets, interesting local museums, picturesque, historical towns and vibrant cities. Wonderful restaurants nearby: formal (Michelin*) and plenty informal ones (with or without outdoor terraces); many along the river Maas where you can watch the boats go by...

Great opportunities for shopping in nearby towns, also Outlet-Shopping Centre (Roermond). And so much more...

Guestbook comments from the manager

We stayed in the joffers house in August 2014. We had a lovely two week family holiday, hiring bikes and cycling along he river Mass, visiting lots of areas in Holland, we spent a day in Germany and the added bonus of just being able to enter centre parks to enjoy their swimming facilities on a wet day! There was loads to do and beautiful nearby parks. Without doubt the house was one of the most beautiful we have ever stayed in. Thank you for a lovely holiday.

Beautiful, historic, modern, cozy vacation house to relax

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed staying in this beautiful home. We were with the four of us and stayed four nights but could have easily stayed longer. We were able to use the bikes available in the garage to have a truly Dutch experience and bike to the neighboring towns and across the river to historic Arcen, with the castle and a lovely square with restaurants. Great location. The home itself is spacious and very well kept. The kitchen is well stocked with appliances. We didn't miss anything. The outdoor space in the garden is very nice and creates even more living space outdoor to have a nice meal outside. I also loved watching the sunset over the corn fields from the second floor. I definitely recommend staying at this beautiful home.

in one word: perfect!

  • 5 of 5

It is a joy staying in this house. As soon as you enter the house I felt welcome. The house has a very light and happy atmosphere what with the big windows, the colours used, the art everywhere and of course all mod coms. I stayed here with some good friends and we went for long walks, and sat in front of the fireplace enjoying spending time together in this place that felt so much like home to us.

There is lots to do in the neighbourhood, e.g. we went to see a lovely German town across the border called Kempen, but there is also Kevelaer, Venlo, Maastricht a bit further down etc. etc. Anyway, it was perfect, our stay in The Joffers!

wonderful place to stay, simple yet sophisticated and very welcoming.

  • 5 of 5

I stayed in the House 'The Joffers' during the last week of May and what a pleasurable stay it was! The house welcomes you as soon as you enter it. The atmosphere is very peaceful, light and uplifting. The rooms are tastefully designed, with beautiful art all through the house. All mod coms are available and even the china is cheerful and special. The bedrooms are comfortable, with good beds and special bedlinnens. Furthermore there is a pleasant garden with several places to sit, have coffee and just relax.

The nearby villages and river Maas are very attractive with nice outside terraces. Lots to do and see as well: Arcen, the ferries, the walks, cycling, castles and of course nearby Germany.

I enjoyed everything very much and thans May and Annemieke for your hospitality. I will certainly come back again to The Joffers!

Nice house but beware of extra charges

  • 3 of 5

Our holiday started badly with our flight being cancelled due to a technical fault and an 8 hour delay for another flight. We were in constant contact with our hostess by text and she agreed it was fine for us to arrive in the early hours of the morning. However, 4 days into our holiday we received an email from the owner telling us that we had to pay an excessive fee for late arrival. We replied saying that we had not been informed there would be a charge for late arrival and thought this was unfair. The owner said we must realise they don't function like a hotel but agreed to drop the charge on this occasion. We have stayed in other houses where we have arrived in the early hours without a problem and with no extra charge. This whole saga ruined our holiday. The Netherlands is an expensive place, especially for food and we spent the rest of the week wondering what other charges we were going to face. We already knew we had to pay for gas, electricity, washing machine hire (charged per load even though you still have to pay for the electricity) and hire of the 2 bikes in the garage. We will never again stay in a house that doesn't have all charges included in the price.

The house itself is lovely with nice furniture and comfy beds. However, it is very close to the church and the church bells ring for 2 minutes at 8am every morning waking you up! The village is very quiet with 1 bar/restaurant which, both times we went in, only had us and the owners in there. Nearby Arcen is a nice town with nice places to eat. There are lots of cycle paths around and we hired bikes and rode along the River Maas. We also visited the tank museum at Overloon. We spent 1 day in Germany and prices are much cheaper there.

Owner's Response: We are sorry to hear that a late arrival ruined your entire holiday… However, our hostess, Annemiek was kind enough to accommodate you at 1 a.m. and made a 30 min journey to welcome you. All our charges were, and are fully itemized except for a late arrival charge which is now also clarified. Sadly, we are not in control of when church bells ring in our village, of flight delays, and the fact that life is more expensive in the Netherlands than in Germany! With best wishes, May & Annemiek HET HUIS 'DE JOFFERS'
