Here in the beautiful Languedoc-Roussillon area of the Aude region of the South of France, there is so much to offer your group, whether you have in mind a family celebration or occasion, family or class reunions, a week of pampering, a HQ for walking, touring, cooking or painting holidays or, just a relaxing ‘get away from it all’ holiday with your friends and family and pets. With secure outside entertainment space as generous as the manor house, incorporating secluded gardens, with hammocks and plenty of seating, a large covered open-barn summer kitchen, BBQ and large dining area, hot tub, heated swimming pool and many games – there will be plenty of opportunity to enjoy individual peace and quiet, fun for children (ages 0-80!), as well as being able to create a party atmosphere when you want to.

The area:

The house is situated between the Black Mountains, to the North, where there are pine forests, and mountain villages and Alpine houses, and then to the South are the Pyrenees, usually snow capped. There is also bike hire nearby, so if you enjoy cycling, where it's possible to cycle along the Canal du Midi from the house. The quaint town of Trebes is a good place to cycle to, as they have a whole host of good restaurants and bars - but it's always harder to cycle back!

The mediterranean coast is about 40 mins, and there are some great places to visit such as Gruissan/Sete - two lovely fishing port and old towns, and Collioure - about an hour away, an artist village, perched on a hill side, tumbling down to the coast. Barcelona, is also about 3 hours drive from the house.

Aude is steeped with history and there is La Cité of Carcassonne to visit nearby (about 10 mins by car), Lastours, 7 Cathar Castles perched up high on the hillside, with the award winning restaurant, Le Puits de Tresor. There is an abundance of Medieval villages such as the beautiful city of Mirepoix, with Monstegur located nearby - the last Cathar strong holding, with its amazing views. It can also be enjoyable to go up in a sky lift to the top of the Pyrenees at any time of year as the views can be spectacular.

There are also two renowned caves to visit, Grotte de Limousis and Cabresprine.

If you are a bit of a foody you won't be disappointed as there are some fantastic local restaurants - La Bergerie just 10 mins by car in the Village of Aragon, La Barbacane in the Castle, Epicurie, 5 minutes by car, the list is endless. We can provide a more detailed list.

Rennes les Bains - a thermal spring, which has a great walk around the village, and you could combine a trip there to Rennes la Chateau - perched high up on a hill - Dan Brown's, Da Vinci Code, was said to have been inspired by the village, a great mystery where they think the priest found some hidden treasure, as he suddenly came into great wealth, and it is said that he left a secret code with clues to where he has hidden the rest, the views are stunning, as they reach out over the foothills of the Pyrenees.

The house is based in between several different wine regions; Villegailhenc is in the Cabardes region, and then a short drive you have the Minervois region (our favourite), then the Corbieres region lies to the south of Carcassonne, and throughout the region there are quite a few others to choose from, and you will be able to do wine tasting, if you wish.

There are some great local markets including Carcassonne market each Saturday, soak up the buzz of the market from one of the many bars located around the main square where you can enjoy having fresh sea food tapas, a drink or a meal.

Aude is one of the most diverse regions in France, it is also very rustic, and it has remained largely unspoilt by the modern world. Visitors will be able to enjoy an authentic French experience by visiting this area you can no longer enjoy in many of the more internationally known resorts.

About Melanie or Colin Hollidge

Colin and myself have been running our house rental for fourteen years. We are both really arty, Colin is a practising artist and you will be able to view his paintings which adorn the walls of La Maison.

We were drawn to this area because of the stunning countryside and the vast choice of walks, good local wine and gourmet food.

Colin is an artist and many of his paintings are of the local area, as he finds it a constant source of inspiration.

Melanie or Colin Hollidge purchased this chateau / country house in 2002

Why Melanie or Colin Hollidge chose Carcassonne surroundings

We fell in love with this property not just because of the wonderful original features such as the original tiles, marble fireplaces, high ceilings and the stunning stone carved staircase spanning three floors, but because of its fantastic location here in the Carbardes wine region of the South of France. It’s in a lovely village and only a 10 minute drive to the City of Carcassonne and 15 minutes from the airport. The views from the second floor of the house are breath-taking and the established garden has some 200 year-old rare variety, coniferous trees, giving natural shady spots for those hot summer days.

On a more practical basis the village provides great local produce and amenities (including butcher, baker, pharmacy, doctor, dentist and supermarket) which means that you don't have to get in your car each day to enjoy lovely freshly baked baguettes or croissants. The village provides easy access to the some of the most amazing historical sites in France, such as Le Château de Montségur, a former fortress near Montségur, a commune in the Ariège region - its ruins are the site of last stronghold of the Cathars. Then there are the grand Black Mountains (Montagne Noir) to the North, the regal Pyrenees to the South, 40 minutes to the beautiful south coast, as well as gorgeous swimming lakes nearby. 2 weeks will not be enough to take it all in!

On a more practical basis the house is situated in a village with great amenities which means that you don't need to get in your car each day to get one of the lovely freshly baked baguettes or croissants from the bakers. Plus only a 10 minutes drive to the City of Carcassonne, large supermarkets, 15 minutes from the airport. It's also en-route to the beautiful Mountain Noir. The locals are so friendly, if you want to taste the French experience, living in a traditional house and living like a local then this is the property for you.

If you travel South, North, East or West you will find a different landscape.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

La Maison is a great place to spend a holiday, especially for large groups of family and friends, as it offers plenty of space for both entertainment and relaxing inside and out.

There is a large covered barn area, with a hot tub, summer kitchen (including an extra dishwasher), gas and coal BBQ, seating, dartboard and table football.

The pool is heated to around 28-30 degrees throughout the year. There is also an area with swings and a ping-pong table. Fantastic indoor entertainment space with Smart TV, Blu Ray Player, Denon home cinema linked to directly to broadband - easy streaming of the web, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Spotify. Dance floor with disco lighting and sound system to use with blue tooth. Full sized bar with drinks fridge and walk on well cover.

There is also a library where you can relax and plenty of outside seating to escape the hubbub when needed.

This place is amazing!

  • 5 of 5

What a find! La Maison is an absolutely wonderful place to stay. The village has the essentials and is very easy to get to Carcassone. There are beautiful walks nearby too.

Mel and Colin were both fabulous to deal with. The house was fully equipped with everything we needed for 20 of us to have a relaxing and comfortable stay. Colin had lit a fire for us on arrival which was amazing and nothing was too much trouble. All of the rooms were lovely and each room has its own bathroom which is a bonus.

The outside area was great for children who enjoyed many hours in the pool. The hot tub was also an added luxury!

On Mel and Colin's recommendation we also used a chef who came to the house and cooked for all of us on a number of occasions. Petra and her husband Marcel were absolutely amazing and well worth it.

Mel and Colin gave us many recommendations of things to do in the area and places to eat and it is the perfect house to do as little or as much as you want.

Thank you for a wonderful stay - we will be back!!

perfect family retreat and a hot tub too!

  • 5 of 5

Just perfect. Ideally located for Carcassonne airport, and the surrounding area - beach and mountains, both in easy reach. Very impressed with the facilities - pool, play area for children and a fabulous hot tub too. We loved our stay there and our only regret is that we didn't book it for two weeks instead of one.

Relax and enjoy La Maison.

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful week at La Maison - the youngest generation (aged 2 - 6) absolutely loved the pools, table football, swings and hot tub - the rest of us found it an incredibly easy house to manage with masses of towels, china, glasses, cutlery etc and endless hot water - great to have a shower room with every bedroom too. Such a beautiful area to cycle, run and drive around and lots of super restaurants too - everyone in the village is so helpful and friendly and Colin and Mel were super efficient too ! A truly relaxed house to stay in with lots of space and a perfect set up for 2, 4, 5 and 6 year olds ! One of the easiest large houses we have stayed in !

La Maison - great for large families and groups

  • 5 of 5

As a large group of extended family stayed at La Maison in April this year. We chose this house as it has so many en-suite bathrooms and we were not disappointed. Most of the bedrooms especially the ones on the first floor were palatial, and the current owners have kept all of the beautiful original features of the property, such as the hand made terracotta tiles, marble fireplaces, water marble fireplaces, water pump, old sink and so fourth - the house has an artistic eclectic feel which works really well. Our family spans over several generations and it was perfect for everyone from age 3 to 80, the kids enjoyed the heated pool and we spent hours enjoying the jacuzzi. There is enough space for everyone, in either the great outdoor barn area, with summer kitchen or in many of the seating areas both in and outside the house. The kitchen is really well equipped, with plenty of cutlery and crockery to avoid doing the dishes when required. The house is ideally located for walking to the local bakers, butchers and supermarket, the locals are friendly and it made it feel like a really authentic French experience. We hired bikes during our stay, and biked out to the canal, and several tracks just outside the village. There are so many places to see and visit in the area, lakes, caves, the Med, but we spent most of the time at the house as it was hard to pull ourselves away. Would highly recommend.

A great venue for a get-together

  • 4 of 5

We’re just returned from a most enjoyable stay at this property to celebrate an 80th birthday. It’s very suitable for a group of friends as the rooms are en-suite. (Some bathrooms are a bit on the small side, but big enough).

The owners have been very helpful through the whole process of booking, arrival, and throughout our stay, and in returning our deposit afterwards.

The village of Ventgailhenc is very French and sleepy, and there’s not a lot in the way of night-life. We used the local shops (patisserie, butchers and supermarket), all within walking distance, and created our own night life in the wonderful outside area (- which has its own fridge and dishwasher!) - and in the charming dining room. The local winery sells refillable buckets of wine, 5 litres for €6 – very quaffable for afternoon drinking:)

The house is on a road which can be a bit busy, particularly first thing in the morning, and the entrance to the driveway is a bit tight, - a lot of care is needed, especially when pulling out. There is some parking across the road opposite the entrance, which is a lot easier, though a bit further to walk.

This area of France is very beautiful; a visit to Carcassonne is a must. Although if the weather is good, it’s hard to leave the swimming pool!

Our group included two children (ages 3 & 6), who loved it! We would definitely like to return to stay in this property, and are looking for another excuse for a celebration!

Good for all ages

  • 5 of 5

Just back home from a lovely week in your fantastic house.

We all loved the time we could spend here (from 1 year old up to 65 years old). In a matter of fact it was better than we expect.

Easy to to do a lot of things in the surrounding and in the house for everyone. Great dinner times in the garden with 20 people at the table.

I surely gonna recommend this to my friends.
