Country Farm House with Garden and New Pool

Updated: 17-Jun-2016
Farmhouse near Caylus, Tarn et Garonne, Midi-Pyrenees - Peaceful Location, Amazing Walks, Flowers and Wildlife with huge numbers of butterflies.

The house is in an idyllic rural location in a small hamlet close to a medieval market town in Tarn et Garonne, in the heart of the area where Charlotte Gray was filmed. There is easy access to many of the Bastide towns, historic Albi, Rocamadour and the valleys of the Lot and the Aveyron.

The house is a 17th century stone farm house which has been renovated to create a comfortable home away from home with all the modern conveniences you would expect. There are wonderful walks that start at the back door and lots to explore further afield, from a leisurely Kayak down the Aveyron, to the ancient cave paintings at Pech Merle or spectacular Rocamadour. There are local lakes for swimming, tennis courts and vineyards to keep you occupied as well as spectacular butterflies, birds and flowers and the Milky Way visible at night.

The villages around are very beautiful with many original medieval buildings. Historic Najac is a short drive away with a spectacular castle where Richard the Lionheart once signed a treaty.

The valley of the Averon is also majestic with gorges and overlooking villages which can be seen from the kayaks floating down river.

About the Owner

I am a recently retired doctor and have owned my beautiful farmhouse since 2004. I am now able to spend more time in France but love to share this very special place.

I am a walker, plants woman and gardener and delight in the extraordinary flora and fauna of the surrounding area.

When I am not gardening or improving the house, I enjoy the opera and learning how to be retired and getting to know my new grandson.

We had a spendid time there, very much enjoying the tranquility of the area. The walks around the local countryside were beautiful. The weather was fantastic. The pool was appreciated in the hot weather. The garden was in full flourish. So colourful. It was hard to believe that the pool was so new with the colour and growth in the landscaping around it! The house was perfect and we have many happy memories of breakfast, lunch and dinner all outside everyday.

Everything was great and we have loved staying in your lovely home. We have made good use of the area with walks, picnics, bike rides, and swimming loads in the river Aveyron.

True rustic charm!

A beautiful house in a lovely peaceful hamlet with lots of lovely walks round and about. The pool is lovely and clean and the garden is a haven for butterflies and wildlife. There are fruit trees, sunflowers, lavender and wildflowers of every colour and description. There is also ample lawn space for children to run around or play football. Our son also particularly appreciated having English TV available. The local villages and countryside are spectacular. This is a relatively unpopulated and undiscovered region still although many local shops do stock English produce and the people are very welcoming and usually happy to speak English if you need it. All in all, a lovely relaxing holiday in a beautiful house and setting. We will definitely return!

Owner's Response: Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed the place as much as I do. The garden has been 4 years in the making and is not quite finished but is having the desired effect of encouraging butterflies and birds. The meadow patch is beginning to develop a wide variety of wild flowers which come in succession starting with anemones, tulips and daffodils through Yellow Rattle and Bee orchids and ornithogalums to salvias and achilleas. The butterfly count has vastly increased since leaving the area uncut. The sunflowers were sown by my 5 year old grandson and seem to have been spectacularly successful. The birds will love the seeds. As you say the surrounding area is very beautiful and much of it is under conservation by the Architect du Batiments Francais to preserve the character of the buildings and the wildlife. Do come back!

From the Owner

I have known the area for 20 years because an old friend has had a house there. When I decided to buy a home in France, I naturally chose Tarn et Garonne because of numerous friends around. The area is unspoilt and sparsely populated with glorious countryside, medieval villages and wonderful wildlife. There are spectacular orchids, rare birds, fantastic butterflies and red squirrels. I was lucky enough to find an ancient property, deep in the countryside where the lack of light pollution means the night sky is full of stars and you can see the Milky Way.

From the Owner

The property is tranquil secluded and comfortable. There is a fully equipped kitchen including a library of cookery books. There is a dishwasher and washing machine, in fact it is a home from home. There is also a collection of flora, bird and butterfly identification books, television with a Humax tuned to British television, a DVD player with a huge collection of films and a CD player. The house is large with an 8 metre by 5 metre sitting room and a similar sized kitchen. There is a large garden and walks in all directions. The nearest village is 7 minutes away by car where there are all the necessary shops, cafes and a swimming lake. The wonderful local markets take place weekly, especially St Antonin, the location for the film Charlotte Grey.

  • Notes on accommodation: The house is large and the very thick ancient walls keep it cool in summer and warm in winter. There are 2 wood burning stoves that keep the house very cosy in winter and a large log pile in the pig shed.(No pig!) In the summer it is wise to keep the sun out of the building to keep it cool, there are fans in all bedrooms. The character of the old house has been carefully preserved but all modern amenities are available along with a well equipped kitchen. Suitable for children. Outside: There is a large private garden, with outdoor furniture including loungers and table and chairs with parasol. The pool is 9 meters by 5 meters and a uniform 1.5 meters deep with a flight of steps at one end where small children can play and a stone paved sitting area with scented plants. Several outdoor toys are available for small children, bikes, wheelbarrow etc. A wildflower meadow has been planted to encourage the thousands of butterflies and other insects, some of which are extremely rare in Britain, that abound in this conservation area. In spring there are countless wild flowers including 3 types of wild orchid in the garden itself as well as many more on the hill behind the house. The garden attracts many birds including Golden Orioles, Nightingales and Woodpeckers and deer, red and black squirrels, hares and the occasional wild boar can be seen in the surrounding woods with Booted Eagles, Kites and Buzzards floating on the thermals above. Utility Room: The utility room contains a Belfast sink, a washing machine and drying line and some out door toys. Also a spare fridge, useful for drinks. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are all provided. The property is cleaned between lets. All cleaning products are provided. Guests are asked to bring their own swimming towels.
