About Kate McKinlay

The house belongs to the McKinlay family and is part of their independent vineyard, Domaine de Mourchon. Walter and Ronnie McKinlay first bought the land in 1998 and were joined a few years later by daughter and son-in-law, Kate and Hugo, who now help run the vineyard. Kate and Hugo renovated this old farmhouse 4 years ago and have brought up there three children there. During the summer months Kate, Hugo and the kids are either away on holiday or busy working at the Domaine and so rather than leave the house empty have decided to rent it out to holiday makers.

Kate McKinlay purchased this house in 1998

Why Kate McKinlay chose Séguret

The story of Domaine de Mourchon and the McKinlay family begins back in Scotland in the 1970s, when Walter McKinlay and his wife Ronnie chose an excellent Vacqueyras as the house wine for her restaurant at The Udny Arms Hotel in Aberdeenshire. Thus the family interest in the wines of the southern Cotes du Rhone began.

Some years later, having sold his business in information technology, Walter turned his attention back to the southern Cotes du Rhone, seeking a small established vineyard to which he and his wife might retire. Despite the fact that the land at Mourchon had no winery and no house, this outstanding terroir set in an extraordinarily beautiful location beneath the slopes of Mont Ventoux could not be denied. So Walter, (never really the retiring type!) purchased the vineyard.

What makes this house unique

Staying at our family-run private vineyard offers a unique opportunity to understand the magic and mysteries of wine production with tours of the vines and winery as well as tastings of the Domaine’s quality wines. With the family at hand to help arrange visits to other key vineyards and sites of interest in the area, staying at the Winemaker’s House at Domaine de Mourchon will provide the visitor with a truly original and memorable holiday. This is great touring country, with mountain-biking and hiking in the hills, more sedate walking and cycling along the backroads and by-ways, colourful weekly markets in Nyons, Vaison-la-Romaine and Carpentras, roman remains at Vaison and Orange, the 14th century papal palace in Avignon, all set in a landscape of vines, 'garrigue' and lavender.

Wonderful house in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in The Winemaker's House. The house itself is a home from home, which can be difficult to find in my experience. Spotlessly clean, light and airy with large comfy sofa, well-equipped kitchen, comfortable bed, great shower, etc, etc. etc. The gardens are lovely and the pool is a great and much-needed place to cool off. The location is absolutely stunning, views over the vines and mountains, a wonderful place to totally unwind. The village of Seguret (classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France) is a short drive away and there are a couple of nice restaurants with a vibrant atmosphere here, which was a nice surprise. The area is interesting, especially if you have an interest in wine and the tour of the winery, followed by wine tasting with Hugo and Walter is fascinating.

The area has many very busy markets which are a great place to spend a few hours.

To sum up this is a place which I would love to return to and somewhere I will recommend without hesitation to my friends and family.

Thank you Kate, Hugo and Walter.

Lovely cottage amongst the vines

  • 5 of 5

Comfortable, spacious cottage, very well equipped with full kitchen and laundry facilities. A family wine estate, owned by UK expat McKinlay family: friendly, outgoing - nothing was too much trouble. From the wine tasting and cellar tour, to the wood for the fireplace, complimentary estate wine and information about the area, our stay was enhanced by their wonderful hospitality. Walter, we won't forget the Provence mashie challenge - I shall be practising my swing and will be back to win the "nearest-the-pin" prize.
