Renovated stone farmhouse in 2¼ acres of gardens. Ideally situated in scenic unspoiled countryside with lovely views yet within walking distance of historic Cordes, a fascinating 13th century bastide town with many restaurants, cafe bars and shops. Sole use of private pool (10x5m). Extensive paved patio terrace with sun awning. Large lounge with beamed ceilings, exposed stonework and double French windows to terrace. This superb stone farmhouse is spacious and well equipped, has fully fitted dining kitchen with beamed ceiling. Laundry/utility room with shower, separate WC and wash basin. 3 double bedrooms, large bathroom, Part air-con. Wood burning stove and central heating for the cooler months. No pets. My wife, Mary and myself, Graham Hewitt, have a business in Leicestershire. We also live in Leicestershire and visit the house in Cordes-sur-Ciel, France as often as we can. We have been to France many times and visited many areas of France.

Why Graham Hewitt chose Tarn

We purchased the house in 2003 because we loved the area and wanted somewhere to stay for holidays and, after we retire, for extended visits. We attended several French Property exhibitions in the UK as well as continuing to visit and tour France to decide which would be the best area for us to purchase our home in France.

We wanted somewhere far enough south to make a difference in the weather; rural but within walking distance of a village with a few shops and restaurants; not too far to travel to a town with more facilities and above all we wanted it to be within about an hour from an airport so that we would be able to fly there for visits from the UK when we didn't have the time off of work to drive there. After much searching we were lucky to come across the house we wanted.

Whilst at a French property exhibition in the UK we came across an estate agent called Charles Smallwood who had moved to France many years previously to set up an estate agent business in St Antonin, not far from Cordes-sur-Ciel. We liked what they had to offer and decided to go over to their offices in France to look at some properties. We had great fun on that trip as Charles had arranged for us to stay for a few days at a nearby Chambre dote. The place was idyllic and everyone else that was staying there was also looking to buy their little bit of French paradise on varying budgets.

The first day we were shown around properties in the area. There were some interesting ones but none ticked all our boxes. The next day we continued to look through the estate agents catalogue of properties and visited a few but still no luck. We went off for lunch on that second day arranging to return to the agents afterwards.

We returned after lunch and were beginning to think that we would be returning to the UK empty handed. Then Charles came into the office and said he'd just surveyed a place that would be perfect for us. We were the first to see it. He was right. We loved it, and still do.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The area that the house is in is known as the Tarn region's golden triangle between Cordes-sur-Ciel, Albi and Gaillac.

Cordes is almost two villages in one. There is the pretty modern day French village with a nice range of shops etc but there are a couple of roads that lead off the village up to the medieval bastide town of Cordes-sur-Ciel. This has been well preserved and is not just a museum piece but a place where people live and work in the historic houses and shops/businesses. There are many artists and pottery makers and artisans, several restaurants and the view from the top is amazing. Can you spot our house, called Scaldis? There is a little road train for people who don't want to walk up. The house is nice and private in a quiet location and has a lovely private pool and extensive patio terrace.

Well my goodness, what can I say - we had a wonderful week in your beautiful home. It was simply perfect in every way. Fully kitted out with everything and more that we needed for a wonderful homely stay. It was perfectly clean and tidy when we arrived. The area was beautiful, Cordes was such a lovely place to walk to and explore. You have the most beautiful house in the most gorgeous of places.

It is our wish to visit again next year (if you will allow us the pleasure).

Notes on accommodation: Part air conditioning. Central heating for the cooler months. Outside: Completely private pool 10x5m. Sole use. The open nature of the pool area makes this property unsuitable for children under 6. Extensive paved sun terrace surround. Large patio area with large outside family dining table, scene of many long lunches. Traditional barbecue. Long driveway from extremely quiet road through extensive grounds to well set back house. Fabulous views over scenic countryside and the historic medieval bastide town of Cordes-sur-Ciel. What a lovely relaxing place to be in. Utility Room: Belfast type sink, washing machine, dishwasher, freezer, stand alone hydro shower unit, separate WC, wash basin. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and house towels included but not pool towels. Weekly changeovers. Other: Dining room with quality dining table/chairs and nice occasional furniture.

Lovely location

We had an enjoyable drive down from Caen, with an overnight stay at Futuroscope. We found the property easily and we had a lovely break at the cottage.

Pool lovely as weather between 30 - 35 deg.C for first few days.

Location was perfect as was able to visit surrounding landmarks every day.The French markets were very enjoyable.

The cottage was a lovely base, and facilities good as well.

Beautiful setting, great location, wonderful pool area.

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Scaldis and would definitely like to return; the rural setting was remarkably peaceful and yet it is only a few minutes from the fascinating town of Cordes sur Ciel.

The pool was very welcome as the temperature was between 28 and 31 degrees for most of the week: the air conditioning in the bedroom was very effective and welcome too.

The house is well-equipped, the laundry/shower room very useful and the grounds and pool well maintained.

The only slight downside for us, as very tall people, is that the ceilings upstairs are very low in places.

Owner's Response: I'm glad that you enjoyed your holiday. The ceiling upstairs is sloping and I can understand that tall people may have to bend forward slightly when getting into bed on the lower side of the bed. When we stay at the house we find that we don't have any problems with the ceiling height. The majority of the bedroom has a high ceiling. Its just getting into bed on one side of the bed that may necessitate bending forward slightly for some people.

Absolutely loved this place. Holiday heaven

This holiday rental is the perfect place if you want a truly beautiful, relaxing holiday. The farmhouse is equipped with everything you could want, sits in a location which is picture postcard material and is so quiet and tranquil we didn't want to go home. The kids loved the freedom (and the wifi), the pool was immaculate and the surrounding towns easily within reach for shopping and sight seeing. Graham mailed us perfect directions and additional information which made our holiday so easy. We couldn't rate this holiday home any higher and have been pining terribly since our return to reality :)

Lovely relaxing holiday house with stunning views.

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday at Scaldis - a family of two adults and three grown children. The first thing you notice is the wonderful views all around the property - you can see Cordes-sur-Ciel from the garden which looks like a town from a fairy-tale. The pool is kept beautifully and the water quality is excellent - it is not heated but it is so hot in this part of France that you don't need it. The pool area is really attractive and surrounded by some pretty urns with brightly coloured flowers and plants. The house itself is very nicely renovated, in fact nicer than it looks in the photos. It has a really useful utility room at the back with sink/toilet/shower room, and plenty of room for washing, drying clothes, etc. Upstairs is really nicely decorated and the bedrooms have lots of space.

All in all we had a fabulous time and would love to return.

A very comfortable property in a lovely rural location

We felt immediately at home in this very clean, comfortable and extremely well equipped and secluded property with its scenic views across the valley. The house is very spacious and cool in the heat of the day. We spent many happy hours relaxing outside. The pool was very well maintained and we appreciated the garden and the quality furniture provided. The barbecue was very efficient and we enjoyed the shade provided by the electric awning. All in all we had a very happy holiday and hope very much to return to Scaldis in the future.

In that time we have made many improvements including replacing the pool and having the extensive terracing built. We always listen to feedback from our guests, trying to cater for their needs. This season we have added free wifi. We hope to have many more years of holiday rentals and many more happy holiday makers.

Beautiful Property, Tranquil Location. Just perfect

We had a week in this beautiful house at the end of July 2016. The house looks tiny from the outside but is like a Tardis inside. It has everything you could want for a fabulous stay and we enjoyed every second

The outside of the property is well kept and the pool man visited twice ( very early morning) when we were there. The dining terrace was lovely and the children loved watching the bees in the Lavender bushes

The area was fabulous and we explored Cordes, Albi and Gaillac.

I would recommend the restaurant at Chateau Laborde just down the road. Lovely food and Good Value

Owner's Response: I'm very pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Scaldis. We have many previous guests that return. When we were looking for a house in France we looked long and hard to find the right place. The area between Cordes-sur-Ciel, Albi and Gaillac is known locally as 'The Golden Triangle' and the property around Cordes is much sought after. Cordes sur Ciel was the winner of most Preferred Village in France 2014. The house is in a great location, near but not too near to the village centre. The house and grounds are private and secluded but the amenities are nearby. I'm glad you enjoyed the restaurant at Chateau Laborde. It's a lovely place to walk to from the house, along the leafy lane.
