About the property

4 bedrooms 2 bathrooms. Tranquil Seaside Location, 5 Minutes Walk to the Beach

This picturesque fisherman's cottage is what childhood memories are made of. A five minute walk to the beach will enable you to spend lazy days fishing, prawning, swimming, or just messing around in rock pools. Mark's was built in the early 1800's and has been fully refurbished and upgraded to VisitBritain's 4 star standard. The cottage is nestled in the traditional rural fishing village of Bucks Mills, which is situated within the North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding National Beauty. It is surrounded by National Woodlands Trust and is a walkers' paradise, only minutes to magnificent coastal cliff top walks and winding woodland paths. There is a wealth of high quality tourist attractions in the area. The Big Sheep comes highly recommended as does Clovelly and Rosemoor gardens. When you've worn yourself out at the beach or cycling the Tarka Trail, surfing, or golfing, fall asleep in peaceful serenity with nothing but the sounds of a babbling brook and the owls hooting.

About Jenny and Steve Oliver

We are a professional family in love with North Devon and have three children.

Jenny and Steve Oliver purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Jenny and Steve Oliver chose Buck's Mills

I was born to a farming family in Abbotsham (five miles from Mark's cottage) and we spent our summer holidays at Bucks Mills while my father would return home to bring in the harvest. We bought Mark's cottage from some family friends and have set about lovingly renovating the cottage and building a garden. I consider it my little part of home. It enables us to spend holidays with my children in a place that is very special to our family. The family farm is now 'The Big Sheep' run by my brother...highly recommended!

Please share with us a piece of paradise and I hope that you come to love Mark's as much as we do.

What makes this cottage unique

We love the peace and tranquility of the cottage, to fall asleep to just the sound of the stream running under the end of the garden and the owls hooting in the woods is just heaven. The beach is so much fun for the kids but there are also so many great activities within easy reach... cycling the Tarka trail, surfing at Westward Ho or Bucks Mills and the Big Sheep! We enjoy the walks but are still trying to train our children to share our passion! The cottage is cosy for two but has great flexibility to accommodate larger parties and we enjoy having the flexibility to invite grandparents or friends to join us for part of our holidays.

Notes on accommodation: The property has been decorated to a high standard but also to be as user friendly to families and children as possible. Roadside parking is available, the road is a dead end and very quiet as it accesses the properties in the village only. The public car park which gives access to the beach is 200yrds up the road. There is no mobile phone reception in the cottage but we have a telephone for incoming and emergencyy calls and unlimited WIFI. We regret no pets are allowed for the benefit of guests with allergies. Outside: Beautiful enclosed garden with a side patio and picnic table with a built in BBQ. The path climbs up behind the cottage to a private hideaway with a day bed. There is a children's play tower at the top of the garden for all your ‘would be’ knights and princesses! There is also further comfortable seating at the top of the garden as this is where you can get reception for your mobile telephone! Utility Room: Highchair. Iron and ironing board. Vacuum cleaner. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bedlinen, electric and oil are included and towels are available on request. For clients staying for 2 weeks the bedlinen can be changed after the first week for a small additional charge.

Beautiful cosy 'hideaway' cottage

  • 5 of 5

Lovely cosy cottage in a pretty and peaceful village close to the beach - a perfect relaxing 'hideaway'. Beautiful log fire and traditional features throughout. Fully equipped kitchen with everything you need. Lovely comfortable beds and very clean. Super hot showers and a jacuzzi bath! Quaint little garden with a lovely little 'treehouse' to hide away! Close to some wonderful beaches and attractions. You really feel like you have 'escaped the rat race' in this perfect piece of heaven. Weather was poor for us but would love to return in Summer. Would recommend without a doubt!!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your lovely review... it's so nice to find like minded people that appreciate our beautiful cottage as much as we do. We would be very happy to have you back to stay in the summer. I can also recommend the spring as the bluebells in the woods and along the cliff paths are stunning. Jenny x

Great property and location

  • 4 of 5

My feedback is intended to help both the owner and those looking to book in the future. The cottage is a great place to use as a base and has the bonus of short 5min walk to a rocky beach which I used for bass fishing and kids for crabbing. The beach is not practical for walking, swimming or surfing although many beaches in the area are. The garden, although pretty needs some attention and proved inpractical to use due to vast amount of insects and really needs some maintenance. House had all the facilities you would require, although needs new tin opener, we couldn't work the jacuzzi bath and no logs left for fire (although cooker provided enough heat). Ironing board collapsed and not useable. Cleanliness of house was general good although we found some knickers and a sleep mask down the side of a bunk bed. Despite this we were pleased with the cottage and would reccomend to anyone looking to stay. There seemed to have been miscommunication with the cleaner on our final morning. Cleaner turned up at 10am and grumbled abit that we hadn't left the cottage, although we were informed via letter that 11am was the time we should have vacated. We felt very rushed and loaded the car incredibly fast so not to cause any conflict. As we were about to drive off we found our letter and showed it to cleaner, but no apology, although this didn't spoil our overall stay. Hopefully the cleaner and owner can resolve the timing issue for future holiday makers. The cottage is in a quiet location and the sound of the outside stream was very relaxing , we all slept very well and couldn't fault the beds/bedrooms. Many thanks to the owners for providing such a nice holiday home and I wouldn't haistate in booking again.

Absolutely Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at Marks Cottage and from the moment we walked through the door we knew we'd chosen the right holiday rental. The house was immaculate and to an extremely high standard interiors wise. The information pack was very helpful in finding things to do whatever the weather. The owners had warned us that the bad storms had washed access to the beach away so we had to drive to other beaches but this really wasn't an issue. We went with my parents even though I hadn't spent a night with my parents for over 20 years the layout of the house worked for us not to all be on top of each other. Our 2 children loved garden and the bunk beds. The local area has an awful lot to offer and there are some lovely local walks. All in all I have no hesitation in recommending this lovely home and would certainly book again. Excellent value for money. THANK YOU x

We stayed here over New Year and had a fantastic time. The cottage is wonderful. Its cosy and well equipped and the fact that you can be on the beach in about 3 mins is amazing. The Redfyre boiler/cooker does take some getting used to for cooking but it keeps the cottage very warm and for our family we were able to cook a wide variety of meals just like we would at home on our gas hob. The woodburner helps to create the cosy feel of the lounge and it was great to get the kids involved in setting the fire each evening before settling down with a lovely glass of something and a movie! The bedrooms and bathrooms were beautifully clean and everything was working well including the jacuzzi bath! The best bits though really are the location and peace and quiet. The cottage is by no means isolated though. Its easy to reach from the main road, just a mile or so down a well paved road that's generally wide enough for two vehicles to pass. If you know the area then this lane feels like a motorway in comparison. We were delighted with no mobile signal for a few days, albeit you can get a signal if you really need one by just trying to stand in a few different places outside the cottage. The wi-fi signal more than make s up for this though as we were able to Skype friends and family to with them a Happy New Year! If you are looking for a peaceful rural retreat close to the sea then I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Mark's Cottage. With so much to see and do in the area or just some gentle costal walks it's a wonderful cottage and location.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your lovely review. We agree that Bucks Mills is a very special location, the peace and tranqility of the cottage nestled in the wooded valley running down to the sea is unrivalled. You must come back in the summer to appreciate the beach with a little more sunshine!

5 minutes walk to Bucks Mills Beach via a steep path. It’s a wonderful mixture of sand and rock pools. It is safe for swimming but there is no lifeguard. Swimming is best from mid to low tide in ‘the Gut’. To the left of this is a large shallow rock pool called ‘the bunky pool’ which is perfect for toddlers and is where I grew up with my friends eating sand!! The sea comes onto the pebbles at high tide and is then best for skimming pebbles. There is a reef break for experienced surfers only.

1 hour drive from Exeter airport. 1¾ hour drive from Bristol airport. 1½ hour drive from Plymouth airport. A39 Atlantic Highway and turn off at Bucks Cross down the wooded valley for 1 mile to Bucks Mills

1 mile to Bucks Cross which has a post office. 2 miles to Hoops Inn - nearest pub - traditional Devon thatched pub with a restaurant. 5 miles to Bideford, the nearest town where you can find ASDA, Morrisons, Banks, take-away's etc.

Further Details:

Westward Ho! 5 miles away. This is a massive sandy beach great for families. It’s also a great beach for learning to surf or kite surf. Sandymouth, 10 miles in North Cornwall is a stunning sandy beach with loads of rocks for clambering too. The Bush Inn at Morwenstow does some of the best Sunday lunches in the area and makes a great day out. The Splash swimming pool in Bude has waves and a slide is popular with my kids. The Big Sheep is our favourite tourist attraction and is great fun for all ages. Huge indoor play area, train and tractor rides, laser shooting, high ropes course, mountain boarding etc. but even better a microbrewerey with great real ale for dad!

Cycle the Tarka Trail, bikes for hire from Bideford 6 miles away. This follows an old railway line for fantastic traffic free cycling. Rosemoor gardens and Dartington Glass and 1646 are high quality tourist attractions in Torrington, 8 miles away. Clovelly - our neighbouring village is one of the most picturesque villages in Devon is only 3 miles away. It's a long but beautiful walk along the beach or cliffs. The Eden centre is a long day out but highly recommended by previous visitors

The Big Sheep - Great day out for kids and parents. Tour the Village of Clovelly – our neighbouring fishing village visible (and walkable – if you’re feeling fit!) from the beach, is a beautiful place accessed by steep cobbled steps. Beer is available at the bottom of the hill at the Red Lion Pub, (Remember there’s a walk back up the hill). Tour the Rosemoor Gardens - An estate left to the RHS, close to Torrington that is great for kids to run around. Cycle the Tarka Trail – Amazing sculptures have been installed along the trail that gently goes up the river valley. Walk the Coastal Footpath – Along a walk to the west of Hartland Quay is where my husband proposed to me. I challenge you to find this most beautiful spot! Gnome Reserve – (for Gnome enthusiasts).
