About The Owner

The Buckstone House Coach House is set in the grounds of The Buckstone House, home to Doug and Nikki Smith. Doug is a retired Chartered Accountant and Nikki is a retired physiotherapist. Among other things, Nikki is a keen gardener and many guests comment on the beautiful garden.

Why The Owner chose Staunton

We have lived at The Buckstone House for over twenty years and were married at the church in Newland, three miles away, many years ago.

The Coach House was converted in 2005 and was for some years the home of an elderly parent.

Since 2009, The Coach House has been available for holiday lets and comments from all of our guests show how happy they have been here - even when the weather has been poor!

The Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley are magical places unknown to many; for those who want to walk, cycle or ride, the options are boundless. There are many other activities and it is also a wonderful place to do nothing!

What makes this cottage unique

The swimming pool and tennis court are available for guests use - although they are both used by the Smith family.

Guestbook comments from the owner

“There was everything we needed in the cottage and copious notes on local walks and places to visit. In fact there were lovely walks leading straight from the house so we didn't need to use the car all the time. It must be one of the West Country's best kept secrets."

A beautiful 5* Coach House.

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing property. Everything we needed and more. The layout inside the Coach House was perfect for two couples. Plenty of space, more than enough comfy chairs and dinning chairs. Two bathrooms and a cute kitchen made for a fantastic Easter Weekend. All of us would highly recommend this property.

Owner's Response: The weather was terrible when Val and her relations were staying with us for Easter so I am delighted they were happy with their stay. If only it had been normal at this time of the year, with fresh green hedges and trees in bud, they could have had much more enjoyment from all the lovely walks from the front door. I hope we have the pleasure of welcoming them back at some stage.

Beautiful cottage

  • 5 of 5

We wanted to explore Wales and visit a number of castles in the area and we thought this cottage would be a good location to travel from. The cottage has been updated and it was very clean and well maintained. Doug (owner) was nice enough to have eggs, butter, bread and a bottle of wine waiting for us at check in. Him and his wife were extremely friendly, helpful and easy to work with. We had dinner at The White Horse pub (down the street) and the food and service were very good. While we traveled in November (not the greatest weather in England) we were lucky as the temps were in the high 50's and the days were sunny. While the cottage is a little hard to find, we were able to travel everywhere from this location which was very convenient. We visited Pembroke Castle, Caerphilly, Cardiff Castle. Chepstow, Raglan and a few more. I'm sure that the pool and tennis courts would be nice to use if we came at a different time. I would recommend this cottage and working with Doug was a pleasure.

Brimming with beauty and personality

  • 5 of 5

The Buckstone House Coach House is a joy to stay in. We felt immediately welcome, with a personal greeting from Douglas (the owner) and wine, milk, eggs, and bread awaiting us.

The house's charming layout is full of personality with plush furnishings, interesting antiques, and little loving touches peppered throughout. Both levels of the house are clean and cosy, the comfortable lounge and dining area being perfect for a social/family getaway whilst offering guests privacy with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. We were pleased to find maps and a great deal of useful information about the area in the kitchen and living room, meaning we could enjoy long walks in the Forest of Dean without getting lost.

The local pub - The White Horse - is a very short walk down the road and serves gorgeous food and local beers, with the bonus of an open fire and a friendly dog.

Our stay was extremely peaceful and relaxing, thanks to Douglas' attention to detail in this high-quality accommodation. We would love to come back in the warmer months to test the pool and the tennis court.

Thank you again, Douglas, for the wonderful reception.

Peaceful, beautiful and central location

  • 5 of 5

Big house, more than appropriate for a family of four. Very nicely appointed. Excellent books, maps, etc.

Beautiful surroundings - fields, sheep, horse, wild rabbits, village church, forest. Complete quiet.

Owners of the main building (The Buckstone House) have a magnificent, truly beautiful large garden, placed between the two houses. A bit uncertain about access to it, though; perhaps hosts could be clearer about where to go, and where not to go. Our Coach House had its own private corner with beautiful view and quality garden furniture, though. Nice, heated pool.

Perfect cleanliness.

Doug is a most thoughtful host.

Location right on the border between Wales and Gloucestershire was perfect for our purposes - allowed trips by car - and by foot - in all directions, near and far.

We were very happy about our choice.

Owner's Response: Niels and his family were delightful guests and we much enjoyed having them to stay at The Buckstone House Coach House. We give access of our garden to our guests as well as ourselves and our family but also give our guests a patio where they can have their own privacy. I shall try and work out a better system to let guests feel more comfortable with the access without putting up notices saying "keep off!", "private" etc!

Wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

What a gorgeous place to stay. Wonderful beds and perfect linen - like a gorgeous hotel suite but with so much space. It's better than a home from home! Explains why I have chosen to return multiple times rather than stay in a local hotel when working nearby.

Nothing is too much trouble for Doug - the perfect host - just a shame that he can't fix the weather sometimes ;-) New boiler fitted when we were there and now the showers are as good as the rest of the property.

Lovely touches with fresh bread, milk and local farm eggs provided on arrival. Birdsong in the morning, deer along the road, horse when you look out of the window into the paddock next door - haven't seen wild boar though and they are supposed to be rampant in the area.

And the White Horse is literally just along the lane when you want nice pub food in a great friendly local pub. Great local walks just a shame the weather wasn't right for using the tennis court or swimming pool - I must return in the summer!

Public transport in the area is poor and guests are recommended to have their own transport. We are about half an hour's drive from the Welsh side of the Severn bridges, about a hour from Bristol and Birmingham Airports and two hours from Heathrow by car.

Both Monmouth and Coleford are three miles away and each have supermarkets, chemists and banks. Ross-on-Wye is about 20 minutes in the car.

Further Details:

There are several golf courses within half an hour or so, including Celtic Manor, home of the 2010 Ryder Cup.

The River Wye and Usk are famous salmon rivers and you may be lucky enough to see the Severn Bore.

The Wye Valley offers many possibilities including canoeing, kayaking, climbing and abseiling.
