Lower Damgate Farm (Damgate.com) is a 16th Century Farm nestled between Dovedale and the Manifold valley in a stunning area of The Peak District National Park. Our 20 acre four star property, sleeps up to 23/4 guests in the Courtyard property, plus another 5 in the Farmhouse. Exclusive use for 30 guests. Hire is for either the courtyard, or the whole. (However The Old B&B Rooms (5) can also be hired separately). The property is ideal for large groups, get away breaks, family holidays, birthdays, reunions, gatherings, special events, weddings or relaxing weekends. During weekdays hire is also available for business groups.

The spacious courtyard property (Reuben’s Roost, Bremen’s Barn and Hope’s Hideaway) is set up for large groups only, sleeping up to 23/24. This property as one is the ideal setting for group gatherings with the space to all get together or to be separate depending upon your needs. If you include the farmhouse property sleeping a further 5 guests, you have exclusive use of the whole property sleeping up to 28 plus 2.

As well as being fitted out to a very high standard with luxury furnishings, good beds and luxury linen included, the whole property has all the latest technology with Wi-Fi and Satellite TV incorporating distinctive and original features, plush furnishings and antiques. There is also a separate games room with entertainment and a super league pool table and there is a large laundry room with shared utility equipment. Featured in the Best of Britain Sunday Times Travel Section, Lower Damgate Farm offer stunning views, luxurious and comfortable home surroundings where you can relax and escape the world.

Outside there are many areas to explore. Patio decking areas with garden furniture and stone built BBQ's. Large lawn enclosed garden which is "safe" for children with a little tykes play area, further garden seating and an adventure climbing frame for the older children.

We mow the paddock and orchard during summer months for outdoor games with picnic tables and lovely views. There are also 20 acres of farm grounds that you are welcome to use and explore.

We have a small working farm and provide a forever home to a number of alpacas, goats, horses and ponies as well as ducks, geese and chickens. All ages love to interact with them and many enjoy helping to feed the ducks on the pond or collecting eggs straight after lay, as well as holding a handful of corn for a greedy goat to nibble.

Animals are part of our farm so guests should be aware of this before booking.

Dogs are welcome in the courtyard property, however we keep the farm house rooms free of animals in case anyone has allergies.

In addition we also have a hot tub & party barn by separated negotiation

Our policy is that "Nothing is a Problem" and a warm welcome is always assured.

About Carolyn Wilderspin

It is important to me that my guests have a wonderful time and that my property is right for them. I have a policy that "nothing is a problem" at the farm and my aim is to make my guests feel that they can relax and not have to worry about anything. I try my best and provide a "helpful list" so that my guests can make use of all this area has to offer, or even find a suitable chef or take away to order in for when they arrive. Nothing is problem at the farm. However it is my guests who make it special not me.

I am only an email or phone call away and am happy to answer any questions you may have and discuss your accommodation or event needs personally. I look forward to talking to you and hopefully meeting you soon.

Carolyn Wilderspin purchased this farmhouse in 1996

Why Carolyn Wilderspin chose Derbyshire Dales

Lower Damgate Farm is a Grade 2 listed Derbyshire longhouse. The stone structures dates back to 1585 though the farm is years older than that. We found a Neolithic axe head in the stone walls and Vikings settled in this area. Later the Romans used the farm for smelting and a kiln was forged. We unearthed an original Roman Culvert when we renovated the farm. This runs along the length of the drive and is fed by our own well further up the hill.

The farm had been left to go into disrepair and was derelict before we bought it in 1996. We have spent many years lovingly restoring it to its original beauty. The properties have been sympathetically restored using original materials and though there is state of the art technology hidden in the walls, we have tried to retain as much of the character and look of the buildings as possible.

The is an abundance of history surrounding the farm, Neolithic remains have been found on site as has a Saxon knife in one of the walls. The Vikings have a big History around this area as do the Romans with a hoard of gold found only a mile away.

In 2014 a hoard of coins was found in one of the caves along Dovedale, this is a mere mile from the farm, so who knows what's buried beneath us!

What makes this farmhouse unique

Being in the Peak District National Park, we are centrally situated in the UK which makes us very accessible to everyone for all around the country.

As we have an animal sanctuary on site, I always encourage our guests to interact with the animals. Many of our animals had unhappy lives before coming to the farm and because I work closely with them, you would never know it. All our animals the Alpacas, ponies and goats are very friendly and like nothing better than have an ear rubbed or an apple or carrot fed into their eager mouths. A once timid child by the end of the week or weekend will have all the animals eating out of their hands and I will often go and get you and the children to come and help feed them, or collect eggs. We are a very relaxed venue and with the policy that nothing is a problem many guests come back to us.

I have to echo the other reviews and after looking at all the information and checking out the internet decided to book the whole property for our annual reunion with friends.... This is it, we have found the place to come back to year after year.

You will not be dissappointed, in fact our expectations were met and then some. The welcome gift was a bonus, The properties clean, cosy , beds very comfy and the owners very welcoming. I wasn't sure about the layout of the property before booking but as the owner explained it used to be three properties all connected but now merged into one. It was perfect. There is a big area for us all to meet up in but as our families have grown over the years ( we are now in our 40's with young children) we also had the added bonus of separate areas to put the children or there was the games room for the older ones. There was plenty of room to explore and find space if we needed. Which we didn't, as most of the time was spent in the big main room with a cosy fire catching up with friends.

The Animals were hilarious and we managed to feed the goats and alpacas. The children had never seen an alpaca up close and by day three it was first to the hen house to collect eggs for breakfast and then first in the field to feed the animals.

We managed a long walk into Dovedale from the farm, so no parking issues and the local pub was great and not too far, worth it for the local brew!. Without coining a phrase we will be back, it really is the perfect place.

Absolutely Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Lower Damgate Farm as part of a group of university friends. We have gone away every year for the past 15 years and this is the best place we have ever stayed. Our ever growing numbers meant we needed something large but independent so we utilised the whole site. Cant fault it, loads of space, comfy beds, great facilities. The weather was great so we spent a lot of time outside having a BBQ and playing Rounder's, but as the evening got colder we went inside and there was plenty of room for all of us by the fire. I don't think the website does this place justice as we looked before we came and everything was better than we imagined. The added bonus of feeding the animals especially the comical goats was a treat for the children and they could get eggs from the hen house. After one or two broken eggs (sorry) we made the best and largest omelette. Carolyn was very kind and generous and we forgot to thank her for our welcome gift, a nice surprise after a long travel journey to meet up with old friends. I would definitely recommend and looking again for next year I don't think we will go anywhere else now we have found the perfect place.

The cottages are near to a lovely little village and country park and there are some fantastic walks at nearby Dovedale.
