Cottage Near Appleby, Cumbria, England - Located In Tranquil Rural Area With Idyllic Scenery

The stone-built cottage dates from the early 19th Century when it was commissioned as a school and is located near the village of Great Musgrave. There is a secluded private garden with established trees and a small patio area complete with outdoor furniture. The property is not overlooked, even by the attached owners house. However, a few local rural properties can be seen in the near-distance. The view from the cottage garden looks out over the fells. Whilst the cottage is secluded and tranquil, road links and amenities are not far away. The main trunk route between Scotch Corner and Keswick (the A66) is only half a mile away.

Born and bred in the area and saw no reason to look elsewhere. When you've found perfection you can't improve on it. Whilst we are secluded where we are, it is not far to the outside world!

A Charming, Idyllic & Wonderful place to stay!!

There simply are not enough words to explain how thoroughly lovely our stay at Pauline's cottage was. I came across the cottage whilst looking through the Owners Direct website, Myself, my husband & our 10 year old son along with my parents (78yrs & 80yrs) stayed for a week in July, as we all know you can never predict the English weather but even that was fabulous which was just an added bonus. The real pleasure of our holiday was staying in such a pretty, beautifully kept, clean, tidy & homely cottage as well as meeting Pauline Ellwood the owner who is without doubt one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. On arrival we were greeted very warmly & shown the amenities & how everything worked. We have stayed in many cottages around the UK & I often find they are missing the odd essential like a can opener or bread knife so I took the odd household utensil just in case the cottage didn't have it but I really needn't have bothered, this little gem has absolutely everything you can think of, we were so impressed, from kitchen whisks to egg slicers from DVD's to board games you will want for nothing. With its beautiful high ceilings & generously sized rooms there was plenty of space for all 5 of us to move around comfortably including our little spaniel Luna who loved playing in the secure garden & who Pauline welcomed with open arms. From the outside The Cottage oozes history & is beautifully quaint while on the inside it is a fully equipped home from home with a modern cooker, electric shower, washing machine & fridge so we were able to have our Asda online shop delivered direct to us when we arrived & after a little (but safe) walk on the Morecombe mud flats the washing machine was an absolute god send. It is situated just off the A66 so we were close to all the local places of interest & only 50mins away from Bowness & Windermere, the world (or at least the North) was our oyster & my son Alfie would highly recommend the Ice Cream Parlour at Brough Castle. Like I said in the beginning there are not enough words to explain how lovely this little place is & how friendly & accommodating Pauline was. I could go on forever, needless to say we didn't want to leave & we cant wait to go back. xx

Very nice old cottage, nothing modern but very basic and nice. Will go there again for sure!!

The reception by Pauline was very heartwarming and friendly. She showed us around the cottage, where she lives attached to. But she was very modest and didn't bother us for the rest of the week. If we had questions she would answer them very friendly. If you like modern: don't go there. If you like an oldfashioned, basic holiday in a beautiful surrounding, with a friendly owner you must book. It was for us worth the staying!!

Home away from home!

Very relaxing stay in a charming cottage, which is a real homw away from home. You are convenoiently located between the Lakes & the Dales so you are never short of a day out! The owner (who lives adjacent) is friendly & helpful but not intrusive. If you can find a better cottage for the price ANYWHER, then I suggest you book it. Unbeatable value for money. We will return!

Home away from home!

Having been to a number of cottages around the country, I can say that this one tops the lot! It is in a very convenient location, being between the Lakes & the Dales & has all the facilities you'd want on a relaxing holiday in the country. The owner is very pleasant & will help you with anything you need but she isn't pushy or in your face. An ideal cottage owner! I look forward to future visits, of which I hope there will be many!

I have had holidays in several cottages in this area over many years but once I found the School Cottage over 20years ago I haven'nt been anywhere else, It's just perfect for the Lakes/Dales and North Pennines and I've stayed at Paulines at least twice a year clocking up over 50 visits. Even if not going out the views from The Cottage are great and the magic of Langrigg never fails.

Not near either coast.


Use of car is essential. Kirkby Stephen railway station is about 5 miles away and Appleby approx 5 miles. There is a good road system with the A66 some half a mile away and the M6, 16 miles away.


The town of Kirkby Stephen is 4 miles from the cottage and is an old market town with shops, pubs, cafes, newsagents and banks. The main supermarket in the area is the Co-op, just on the outskirts of Kirkby Stephen. There are 2 petrol stations close to the Co-op. There is a well stocked walking outfitters and several antique shops. Brough is 2 miles in the opposite direction and has pubs, a shop and has great fish and chips!

Further Details:

The Lake District is approx 25 miles away, with places like Penrith, Appleby, Kendal and Barnard Castle also within easy distance. All of these places have different things to recommend them, from variety of shopping to quaint ancient charm. There are so many wonderful places within easy reach, too many to list here.

Booking Notes:
Please telephone or email to make a booking. Payments by cheque please payable to Pauline Ellwood. A refundable deposit is required when booking is secured (usually £50 per week). Refund applicable depending upon circumstances up to 6 weeks prior to travel. Remaining payment required 6 weeks prior to travel. Negotiated short breaks available but please bear in mind a premium will apply for very short breaks. Consult owner for details. Please note that prices haven't increased at all for 4 years.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is almost always a Saturday, except for those rare negotiated shorter breaks. Arrival time is from 3pm (notification of much later arrival would be appreciated). Departure time is 10am.

Notes on prices:
Prices are for the property per week in UK pounds. Price is for cottage let (assuming 5 sharing). Owner will negotiate rate for two sharing. Short-breaks can be arranged with the owner but the rate for anything less than five days will only attract a minor discount.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund for cancellations more than 30 days before check-in date.
  • 100% refund for cancellations more than 60 days before check-in date.
  • Service Fee fully refunded on cancellations that qualify for 100% refund.
