Overview

About the property

Apartment in Val Thorens, Savoie, Rhone-Alpes, France. Peclet quarter, near all amenities, close to slopes.

Comfortable accommodation for the independent traveller looking for great snow in the French Alps. The beauty of independence is spending more time skiing and less time queuing. The studio provides a restful retreat for up to four people. The living and dining area is comfortable and easy to cook, eat and sleep in.

Situated on the fifth floor of an apartment building, the balcony overlooks “Le Peclet” and the glacier to the right. The studio is on the quiet side of the building and keeps you up and away from street noise. From the entrance, there are restaurants, bars, bakers and ski slopes, all within a few steps.

Inside

Enter the cabin area with bunk beds, go through to the living area and the dining table and kitchenette are to your left with the sofa on your right. The bathroom is off the cabin area.

The sofa doubles up as a bed. The second bed (underneath) can be pulled out and set up as a double or a twin. The kitchenette has everything you need to prepare all or some of your meals, ideal for refuelling at leisure after the day’s exertions. There are also a couple of recipe books for inspiration.

Entertainment may be provided by you, your iPod/phone, TV or DVD player. We have made a select choice of classic films as well as providing the age-old backstop of Monopoly, draughts and playing cards.

The studio contains all the essentials for a great week – just bring your own bedlinen and towels (or hire them from the key holder).

Outside

The studio balcony faces north-east (direct sunlight briefly in the morning). “Le Sherpa” hotel is to the left, “Le Peclet” apartments are in the centre and a view up onto the Peclet glacier is to the right. This is the quiet side of the “Les Névés” building up on the fifth floor.

The ski locker is downstairs on the ground floor in a secure room. There is space for skis, boards and hooks for helmets.

Restaurants, shops, bars and bakers are all on the doorstep of the building. We are lucky to have the best baker in the Three Valleys – “La Cime Gourmande” – opposite our front door to provide your breakfast.

Access to the slopes is a short walk in the morning. This will vary from 40m to 200m depending on the amount of snow in the village. Rise early and join a warm-up session using yoga techniques: 30 minutes of pranayama, stretching and meditation before the slopes open.

Return in the evening is from a track that ends next to “Le Sherpa” just behind “Les Névés”. Or the free shuttle bus stops at the door.

House rules

The studio is your home for the week and we welcome you to make yourselves feel comfortable during your stay. Just two requests: 1) no smoking in the studio, 2) pets by prior arrangement.

About Sarah & John

We live and work in north-east Wales on the border near Chester. Over the previous seasons we have welcomed guests from the home nations, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, Sweden, Luxembourg, Poland, Israel and Australia. We really enjoy chatting with enquirers and doing our bit to help provide a great holiday for them.

Sarah & John purchased this apartment in 2009

Why Sarah & John chose Saint-Martin-de-Belleville

Will (eldest son) & John visited Val Thorens during the Easter holidays and really enjoyed the wide range of skiing (we have only explored beyond the Val Thorens-Orelle ski pass once). The journey from north-west England was easy and we knew there would be good snow even late in the season. Nowadays we enjoy finding out what new developments there have been during the summer. Lifts have been added and upgraded, new pistes carved out of the hillside and the village has grown.

What makes this apartment unique

It is just a great place to relax in. Access to the slopes is practically on the doorstep making it easy to return for lunch. In the evening there is an excited vibe from the bars as you return, but as the studio is on the other side of the building you only share this vibe if you join them for an après-ski refreshment.

Cumulatively we have made a lot of changes to the studio over the years. The big one was the window and balcony door replacement but most of them have been small. They have all been driven by one question – how will this make our guests’ stay more comfortable?

On the slopes

Val Thorens offers snow from November to May (171 skiing days) with something for everyone – off-piste powder to corduroy groomed piste; gentle green slopes to boarder cross runs; wildlife walks to airbeds in the snowpark.

Ski & snowboard

The beginner’s area has been organised to provide a dedicated 40ha area with easy access to green and blue runs. Equipped with three, roofed “magic carpets”, the beginner’s zone is a fun area to learn in. Youngsters have their own enclosed area on the edge of the slopes and ESF (l’École du Ski Français) also organises daily child-care facilities. New “Easy Rider” labels mark areas where you can learn and have fun in safety.

The Familypark has jib modules with easy fun jumps for beginners. For the more experienced the Snowpark provides a busy, varied and creative area with over 20 modules (rails, boxes, jibs) for all levels.

Intermediate and advanced skiers and boarders can be carried as high as 3200m to a variety of glacier slopes, black runs or an enticing off-piste experience. There are slopes on the four points of the compass, north-facing for the warm days or south-facing for the cold days. Our experience is that they provide plenty of interest for a week, even into April. High mileage carvers may extend their ski pass to access the rest of “Les 3 Vallées” ski area (600km of piste). Two lifts will take you to Méribel and Les Menuires.

Ski Flux

The lifts can move over 66,000 people/hr, but 80% of the skiers are on 20% of the runs. To minimise queues “Ski Flux” provides real-time information on how busy the slopes are. Data is collected by 10 sensors on the runs and presented where runs intersect. In the Grand Fond area four giant screens provide information on snow-levels, geo-localised weather reports and itinerary tips.

Cross-country & walking

Cross-country skiing opportunities on prepared tracks are limited in Val Thorens. There are cross-country tracks between Les Menuires and St-Martin that are nice. A free shuttle bus will bring you back up the hill. There are growing numbers of fit souls skinning up the mountain on ski touring expeditions. For a taster there is a marked circuit next to the village. Skin up the 1.5km circuit and ski down Plein Sud.

Walkers have a few trails and may use 13 of the lifts. There are organised walks for views and wildlife spotting. Or take a walk towards Les Menuires one afternoon to let your legs recover.

Other outdoor activities

Looking for something else? Try the 6km toboggan run, a downhill run on a mountain bike (once the skiers have left for the evening), a ski tour at sunset, ice-climbing on a frozen waterfall. For spectacular views try the highest zip-wire in Europe or, with a lower adrenalin level, a girocopter flight.

Off the slopes

Away from the slopes there are plenty of evening activities – restaurants, free classical music and jazz concerts in the church, (French language) cinema and bowling alley/sports bar. Or enjoy a gastronomic experience with a Michelin-starred chef.

The sports centre houses an aquaclub-spa facility, well-being complex, fitness sessions, gymnasium, multi-sports and a fun-park for the children, over 23 activities in all. If you arrive early or leave late, the sports centre will store your bags while you ski. (Saturday changeover days are quiet and spacious on the slopes.)

Childcare is available for young children – day-nurseries, kindergarten and mini-clubs. The central square also has a safe, children's toboggan area.

For older kids there is the Alain Prost Ice Circuit! The ice-driving school offers some exciting (safe) fun with cars and go-karts.

And for something completely different – ice-diving. Discover a whole new world beneath a frozen Lac du Lou.

Travel

By train – guests from south-east of England may take the ski-train from St Pancras to Moûtiers. From elsewhere in Britain consider flying to Paris to join the train to Moûtiers. Take a transfer bus to Val Thorens and be on the slopes by 10:30am.

By plane – Chambéry, Grenoble, Lyon and Geneva airports are all serviced by transfer buses to Val Thorens.

By car – Calais is 600 miles away, all dual carriageway bar the last 20 miles.

Feel free to ask us for suggestions on travel arrangements.

Distances to snow nirvana - 100m to Val Thorens / Orelle pistes, one run to Les Menuires, two lifts to Méribel, and one valley to Courchevel.

Has everything you need

  • 5 of 5

The appartement is comfortably furnished and was ideal for our family of 2 adults and 2 teenage boys.

There are a selection of games and DVDs if the weather keeps you inside.

We had a slight issue getting hold of the key holder before arriving (it turned out she was having a baby!) but an email to the owners solved the problem quickly and without fuss. They also advised us of some activities that were going on in VT. overall an excellent experience and no hesitation in recommending them and the appartement.

Perfect place, perfect location, perfect hosts!

  • 5 of 5

We booked very last minute but Satah and John made everything easy and even accommodated our very late check in time. The apartment had everything we needed and location couldn't be beaten, we'll definitely be back.

Thank you Satah and John for a fantastic stay :-)

Cheap and cheerful

  • 4 of 5

A clean little apartment in a lively area of town but thankfully on the quiet side of the building! The apartment was well equipped and had plenty of storage space. It's location was perfect for a variety of bars and restaurants and the slopes were only a short walk away. We had a great week with plenty of snow and sunshine!

Good for price, convenient location

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely time, the apartment was clean and comfortable. It was what you expect at this price point.

The only thing that I would recommend is sorting your own fast internet for the apartment. I think it would be a worthy addition and I would be happy to pay a little more if it had this. In the end we used our iPhones as routers but this will have ended up costing us both about £25 each for the week.
