Overview

Property

Updated: 05-Dec-2016
Apartment in Val Thorens, Savoie, Rhone-Alpes, France - Peclet quarter, near all amenities, close to slopes

Comfortable accommodation for the independent traveller looking for great snow in the French Alps. The beauty of independence is spending more time skiing and less time queuing. The studio provides a restful retreat for up to four people. The living and dining area is comfortable and easy to cook, eat and sleep in.

Situated on the fifth floor of an apartment building, the balcony overlooks 'Le Peclet' and the glacier to the right. The studio is on the quiet side of the building and keeps you up and away from street noise. From the entrance, there are restaurants, bars, bakers and ski slopes, all within a few steps.

You can easily set your own agenda – prepare and book beforehand or make it up as you go. We are more than happy to assist with suggestions.

Val Thorens takes pride in being the highest resort in Europe and guarantees snow from November to May. With slopes on all points of the compass, there are a wide variety of skiing possibilities catering for all abilities. In addition, Meribel and Courchevel are only two lifts away from the resort.

About the Owner

We live and work in north-east Wales on the border near Chester. Over the previous seasons we have welcomed guests from the home nations, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Sweden and Israel. We really enjoy chatting with enquirers and doing our bit to provide a great holiday for them.

Overall impressions

  • 4 of 5

The apartment was what we expected and was all we required. Other people's ideas of cleaning are different to ours. There were fag ends on the balcony which looked unswept. A previous guest's jumper was discovered under the bed together with polythene and a half empty water bottle.

We didn't get a thankyou from the key collector for leaving the apartment super clean and shining. Instead when she entered she immediately yanked the curtains closed leaving gaps. We have no idea why she did this.

On the whole we were delighted with the holiday. Good weather, comfortable accommodation, great ski slopes and fabulous restaurants.

The owners were very helpful with advice on transportation and local info. We'll be back.

Great little apartment situated nicely in a popular resort.

  • 4 of 5

We had a great week at the resort, the apartment was situated conveniently at the top of the town. This meant that we were close to amenities (La Sherpa Supermarket) was just across the road in the mall, which also housed a nice patisserie and restaurant. There are several bars underneath, but being 5 floors up meant that we were not disturbed by noise from the bars, so could enjoy a drink at the Irish bar which had a good selection of drinks and the best free wifi. Just down the hill is where we boarded, is a run that brings you to the lifts, so we were on the piste in seconds. I felt the apartment was good value and everyone in our group said they would return as we had a very enjoyable week stay.

The owners were great at communicating both pre and post holiday and offered advice on a number of aspects from transfers to equipment rental. I would recommend this apartment to friends and relatives, we are already discussing about a return trip next year.

We stayed here for a ski holiday with two teenagers and it was a great place to stay! It was very close to ski lifts, and about 5min walk to center of town, which was really nice and full of live with plenty of bars and restaurants. The apartment was very clean and spacious. We would definitely come back here again!

The apartment is small but well designed, ideal for a family with one or two children

  • 4 of 5

The Apartment is at the top of town with access to the ski slopes going out within a 60 meter walk which is helpful with small children. We visited when the snow was very sparse and we were not able to ski into the top of town so the walk back was a little tiring, but not a huge problem, and there was always a bus if we wanted to wait.

The only downside to the apartment was that it was noisy at night from time to time due to the other occupants in the building returning from the clubs in the early hours, unfortunately we were too old to join them.

The town itself is lively and had a very pleasant atmosphere, although we were surprised it was as expensive as Courchevel and Meribel. My expectation was that it would be cheaper given its reputation as a 'young' resort.

The layout of the resort is ideal for a group with beginners as you are never far from town with ski runs all around the town itself. It was never a problem to be back ready to receive a child from Ski School or to meet non skiers for lunch.

The biggest bonus for us was that there was snow when elsewhere resorts were virtually closed. With the 2-3 glaciers in the valley and with extensive snow management the quality of the skiing was still good, even with the little snow we had.

As with all three resorts in the 3 Valleys the investment in the infrastructure was impressive. We went in a very quiet week, but even so the chair lifts were modern and fast and the multiple cable cars also had large capacity.

All in all we thought the resort was excellent and with new runs being built in the next valley efforts to expand the ski area can only improve the resort as a whole. The links to Meribel and Courchevel were excellent with Meribel only a 20 minute chair/bubble ride away. You really can ski different runs every day if that is what you like doing

We look forward to returning when there is more snow elsewhere and we can also explore the lower areas around Les Menuires which also has a large ski area.

Location

From the Owner

Will (eldest son) & John visited Val Thorens during the Easter holidays and really enjoyed the wide range of skiing (we have only explored beyond the VT ski-pass once). The journey from north-west England was easy and we knew there would be good snow even late in the season. This has continued over the years.

For those wanting to eat-in, there are several supermarkets nearby and a weekly farmers market. A boulangerie opposite the entrance provides fresh pastries and bread every morning.

Facilities

From the Owner

It is just a great place to relax in. Access to the slopes is practically on the doorstep which makes it easy to return for lunch. In the evening there is an excited vibe from the bars as you return, but as the studio is on the other side of the building you only share this vibe if you join them for an après-ski refreshment. Cumulatively we have made a lot of changes to the studio over the years. The big one was the window and balcony door replacement but most of them have been small. They have all been driven by one question – how will this make our guests’ stay more comfortable?
