About the Owner

Hi, I am Aikaterini Fleming, owner of the VIlla Katerina. I am the last remaining member of my family to be born with the name 'Metaxas'.

My early ancestors were pioneers of the 'Silk Road' from China to Constantinople and the name Metaxas comes from 'Metaxi', the Greek word for silk. After the fall of Constantinople in the 11th century, they are believed to have settled in the area of Kefalonia known as 'Metaxata', now a residential village with our Villa at the heart of it.

There the core family remained. Some toiled the land, others became doctors or joined the priesthood. But the prosperity of the family, as was common in Kefalonia, came from shipping. My great-grandfather, grandfather and many uncles were ships' Captains and in the late 19th century, shipowners.

I was brought up in the UK and I have visited Metaxata most summers for over 50 years. I have seen Kefalonia change from an island with no tourism to how it is today, where warm hospitality is offered to tourists within a beautiful and authentic backdrop .

Although the photo's on the web site are very good they don't really do it justice. The size of the villa, garden and pool area is quite a bit larger than first appeared. Excellent facilities including microwave, full size oven and hob and washing machine. Excellent location, with spectacular views all around. The local shop just a short walk up the quiet street, next door to a grill house (eat in or take away). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and, given the opportunity, would definitely come again

Superb large family villa

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 10, 8 adults and 2 young children had a wonderful stay at Villa Katerina. Plenty of space, large bedrooms and all mod cons such as Air conditioning everywhere and washing machine. Metaxeta is a great base for exploring the island with Argostoli, Lassi and the airport all within a 10 minute car ride. Sam our maid was brilliant and helped us with a couple of issues that cropped up during our stay. We used the BBQ at least 5 times using the extensive well lit terrace for some great evenings. The communal pool was a 10/10 with great filtration and jacuzzi features and never overcrowded quite the opposite. Kathy the owner was great to deal with and we will definitely return as soon as possible - highly recommended.

Truly amazing!!!

  • 5 of 5

Just back from an incredible holiday in Kefalonia - stunning grounds, villa and pool. Holiday of a lifetime. Certainly true that you need to pay more to get something special - this certainly stands out for all the right reasons - would thoroughly recommend for an extra special holiday. Would best suit a large group as the villa is so large that we felt 4 of us rattled around somewhat. Perfect location, less than 15 mins from airport, 15 mins to THE best restaurant (The Olive Lounge, Lourdas) 10 mins to your pick of the most incredible beaches and the whole area totally unspoilt by tourists. Owner extremely helpful throughout. Recommend wholeheartedly. 5*

Location

From the Owner

My great grandfather built the original house on the current estate and lived there until the grand old age of 104. My grandfather built the current house in the 1950s. The beautiful and peaceful surroundings in Metaxata have not only supported longlevity but also inspired intellectual creativity. Lord Byron spent some time there when he was writing his famous ‘Don Juan’. Both my grandfather and my father have written and published books while spending time there. For me, the Villa Katerina holds a lifetime of memories. When it came to me, I decided to restore it to its former glory. While installing all the modern day comforts that you would expect to find in a luxury accommodation, I tried to keep the traditional elegance of many original features.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Kefalonia at 5 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : The Grill at 50 Metres Nearest Ferry : Argostoli at 5 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : The Grill at 50 Metres Nearest Beach : Avithos at 2 Kilometres Car: recommended

Villa Katerina is perfectly located.....

Easy travel connections - 15 minutes drive from the international airport. Similar distance to the lively, picturesque capital of Argostoli and to the upmarket resort of Lassi. Nearest supermarket and souvlaki bar within 5 minutes walk, more tavernas and shops within easy walking distance in the neighbouring village. Selection of sandy coves with 1o-20 minutes drive.

Although there is a bus service that goes past the Villa and travel by taxi is relatively cheap (approx. 15 Euros to Argostoli) we would recommend a car if you wish to explore the full extent of the island.

Coast/Beach:

Kefalonia is known for its impossibly blue, clear waters and boasts an amazing coastline with many sandy coves. There are beaches for every taste, more cosmopolitan with lively beach bars or simply quiet and secluded swathes of sand.

The nearest beach to Villa Katerina , 10 minutes drive away, is Avithos beach with golden sand and beautiful clear water. The beach is fantastic for children and there are a couple of very good tavernas there. Other beaches we would also recommend are Lourdas, Trapezaki and the resort beaches of Lassi which are all within 15 minutes travel. Facilities for watersports are available at the Lassi beaches.

What to do if I can tear myself away from the beach?

Kefalonia is a walkers' paradise. Discover huge forested areas of fir and pine trees near Mount Aenos. Explore inland, rugged mountainsides where you will find the remains of villages destroyed by last century's earthquake. Wonder amongst the picturesque vineyards near the Cathedral of St Gerasimos - tasting tours are available.

Shopping

The village shop less than 5 minutes walk does cater for your everyday needs. Argostoli boasts a selection of colourful markets selling local fruit and vegetables as well as traditional butchers and fishmongers. For those who arise early, fishing boats come into Argostoli port in the morning bringing in the night's catch that you can choose from and buy straight from the boat. For more utilitarian shopping, there are a selection of large supermarkets in 'Kokilia' about 15 minutes drive away.

The capital Argostoli

The lifeblood of Argostoli is its lively, seaside food markets and port area. But the heart of Argostoli is 'Valianos Square', right in the centre of town. Here, local people meet in the traditional pastry shops and 'kafenia'. In the evenings, Greek families still go out to take the air and the older people sit down while young boys and girls 'promenade' and meet each other. Plenty of bars and tavernas to choose from around this area.

Organised Tours

Various tours, by coach within the island or by boat around the island or to its neighbours can easily be booked from Argostoli .

Facilities

From the Owner

Villa Katerina is now a luxury property that boasts all the fixtures and fittings that you would expect today. It has the high-ceilinged, large rooms typical of older buildings giving a beautiful sensation of space. The extensive space, both indoors and the on external terraces, allow larger groups holidaying together to spread out or spend time together as the mood takes them. Villa Katerina is nestled in three acres of private grounds. Landscaped gardens lead into the stunning swimming pool area, and into other areas where there are orchards or simply quiet spots where our guests can wonder and relax. I have always loved Metaxata. I have memories of childhood holidays – my grandmother serving lunch after a morning spent on the beach and my grandfather playing his guitar under a blanket of stars on the veranda in the evening. Recently, I have taken pride watching my own children restore part of the old garden. While Villa Katerina is quiet and secluded, I have never got bored or felt isolated there – good beaches, shopping facilities, restaurants etc are all within easy reach. And I never cease to wonder at the beauty of our views.
